Met Police 'set to wind up' probe into Madeleine McCann's disappearance later this year, with detectives said to be 'frustrated' at lack of movement in German case against prime suspect Christian Brueckner

Scotland Yard is set to wind up its investigation into Madeleine McCann's disappearance, according to reports.
The Sun claimed last night that funding for the Operation Grange inquiry – launched four years after the Portuguese police began their unsuccessful search for the youngster in 2007 – will end later this year unless new lines of inquiry emerge.
A source quoted by the newspaper said: 'The end of the road for Operation Grange is now in sight. The team's work is expected to be completed by autumn.
'There are currently no plans to take the inquiry any further.'
Detectives are said to be frustrated by the failure to compile sufficient evidence to prosecute Christian Brueckner, a convicted paedophile, who was named two years ago by German police as the prime suspect for Madeleine's abduction.
Scotland Yard is set to wind up its investigation into Madeleine McCann's disappearance, according to reports. The Sun claimed last night that funding for the Operation Grange inquiry – launched four years after the Portuguese police began their unsuccessful search for the youngster in 2007 – will end later this year unless new lines of inquiry emerge
He has denied any involvement in the disappearance of the youngster from an apartment in Praia da Luz on the Algarve.
Operation Grange, overseen by the Metropolitan Police, is estimated to have cost £13 million.
The Sun said it was understood that Madeleine's parents, Gerry and Kate, both 54, are aware of the impending closure but have vowed to continue their search.
Brueckner is serving a seven-year jail sentence in Germany for raping a 72-year-old woman.
Scotland Yard and the Home Office last night declined to comment on the report.
The Operation Grange team has in recent years been pared down from 40 officers to just four detectives working under Detective Chief Inspector Mark Cranwell.
His team also liaises with Madeleine's parents, of Rothley, Leicsestershire.
In June 2020, police in Britain and Germany launched a renewed appeal for witnesses after disclosing they had a new suspect, who was later revealed to be Brueckner.
German prosecutors remain convinced he was responsible for the youngster's disappearance but despite an intensive investigation have not brought any charges.
Detectives are said to be frustrated by the failure to compile sufficient evidence to prosecute Christian Brueckner (pictured), a convicted paedophile, who was named two years ago by German police as the prime suspect for Madeleine's abduction
German prosecutors believe Madeleine McCann is dead
Brueckner also is alleged to have admitted abducting Madeleine to a friend - and the German team of investigators, led by public prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters, said they were certain he had killed the three-year-old.
It is now highly unlikely that he will be charged over her disappearance.
Wolters went as far as holding a press conference where he addressed Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry over the air.
He insisted: 'We are confident we have the man who took and killed your daughter. All I can do is ask for your patience.'
But claims German detectives had sent multiple notes to Madeleine's family were rubbished within days.
And the Met itself released a pointed statement correcting the allegations about the correspondence.
In May last year, Kate and Gerry McCann (pictured) restated they still believed Madeleine could be alive. A statement that month said: 'The Covid pandemic has made this year even more difficult for many reasons but thankfully the investigation to find Madeleine and her abductor has continued'
It said last year: 'The Met received one letter from the BKA [Federal Criminal Police Office of Germany] on June 12, which was passed to the family.
'The letter did not state that there was evidence or proof that Madeleine is dead, the MPS continues to investigate Madeleine's disappearance as a missing person investigation. No letter has been received by the Met from the German prosecutor.'
In fact in May last year, Kate and Gerry restated they still believed she could be alive.
A statement that month said: 'The Covid pandemic has made this year even more difficult for many reasons but thankfully the investigation to find Madeleine and her abductor has continued.'We hang on to the hope, however small, that we will see Madeleine again. As we have said repeatedly, we need to know what has happened to our lovely daughter, no matter what. We are very grateful to the police for their continued efforts.'
Brueckner is currently serving a prison sentence for drug trafficking and is expected to remain behind bars until 2026 after losing a bid to overturn a rape conviction.
He was last year found guilty of the 2005 rape of a 72-year-old American woman in the same Portuguese resort from which Madeleine vanished and sentenced to seven years in jail, at a court in Brunswick, Lower Saxony.
Brueckner was in Praia da Luz when Madeleine went missing on the night of May 3, 2007, pinpointed there by a mobile phone call.
Madeleine - then aged three - disappeared from an apartment where she was staying with her family.

Kate and Gerry, had been dining with friends in a nearby restaurant and periodically checking on Madeleine and her two siblings - Sean and Amelie - as they slept.
Around 9pm, Gerry went to check on the children and found them sleeping. At 9.30pm, a family friend went to the apartment and heard no noise, but did not check far enough into the room to see if Madeleine was there.
At 10pm, Kate went to check on the children and found Maddie was gone.
The disappearance was reported immediately and a search party launched the same evening including officers from the Guarda Nacional Republicana and the Polícia Judiciária, which launched an investigation.
Amaral was brought in to head that investigation and ran it for several months, infamously naming both Kate and Gerry as suspects.
He was sacked shortly after launching a public attack on British detectives - accusing them of only pursuing investigative lines given to them by the McCanns.
He has since published a book and appeared in a documentary called 'The Truth of the Lie' in which he repeated his claims against the McCanns.
The family won a libel suit against him in 2015, and were awarded £500,000 in damages.

END OF THE ROAD Madeleine McCann inquiry to END after 11 years as fears grow prime suspect WON’T be charged
Mike Sullivan

SCOTLAND Yard is to close down its 11-year investigation into Madeleine McCann’s disappearance.
Funding for the Operation Grange inquiry — launched four years after she vanished — will end later this year.
A source said: “There are currently no plans to take the inquiry any further.”
The decision means that prime suspect Christian B is highly unlikely to be charged over her disappearance.
It underlines how top cops feel there is insufficient evidence to bring a case against the convicted paedophile and rapist, who German cops were convinced was involved.
The Met’s Operation Grange probe — which has run for 11 years — is due to wind down later this year.
MAY 3, 2007: Madeleine reported missing from her holiday apartment at the Ocean Club in Praia da Luz, Portugal, at 10.14pm.
SEPTEMBER 2007: Her parents Kate and Gerry McCann return to England with their twins.
JANUARY 2008: Sketch of a suspect released.
JULY 2008: Portuguese authorities shelve their probe.
NOVEMBER 2010: McCanns sign publishing deal to write book about disappearance.
MAY 2011: Operation Grange is set up by Met Police after Kate writes open letter in The Sun to PM David Cameron asking for inquiry by British cops.
JULY 2013: Brit cops identify 38 “persons of interest”.
OCTOBER 2013: Portuguese police re-open their investigation.
MAY 2014: British cops go to Portugal to investigate leads.
OCTOBER 2015: Operation Grange staff cut from 29 to four.
APRIL 2017: Four official suspects are ruled out.
JUNE 2019: Police receive a further £300,000 funding.
JUNE 2020: Christian B identified as a suspect.
JULY 2021: Operation Grange given a further £350,000.
The source added: “The end of the road for Operation Grange is now in sight.
“The team’s work is expected to be completed by autumn.”
The source said that the case file could be re-opened if any significant new information comes to light.
The Grange investigation was launched in May 2011 — four years after Madeleine vanished — after her mother Kate wrote an open letter in The Sun to then PM David Cameron asking for British police to begin an inquiry.
Current funding of the probe runs out on March 31. A final request by the Met for another grant, taking it to the end of September, was recently submitted to the Home Office.

FOR 15 years, they have vowed to never give up. As they said: “How could any parent do that? You can’t, you never give up.”
This latest news will come as a huge blow to Maddie’s mum and dad, Kate and Gerry, but one they have known was likely to happen.
One of the most devastating things Kate found as she read through Portuguese police files was that within weeks of her going missing, “no one had been searching for Madeleine”.
But Operation Grange has been a massive comfort to them both.
There have been false alarms, false hopes, highs and lows. But through it all, the couple have prayed for the best and prepared for the worst.
It is a disgrace that no one has been charged after all these years of fighting by the parents — not helped by the appalling early investigation by cops in Portugal.
But we salute the family for not wavering and remaining determined to find the answers to their girl’s disappearance. And we fully support them.
It takes the total cost of the investigation to approximately £13million.
Outgoing Met commissioner Dame Cressida Dick said last year that the Grange probe would continue until there was nothing left for them to do.
Madeleine vanished from her family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal on May 3, 2007, when aged three.
German cops at one stage said they had “concrete evidence” that Madeleine was dead and Christian B was involved.
Christian B, 45, was identified as a suspect 2020. He is serving a seven-year jail sentence in Germany for raping a woman aged 72 in Portugal.
The investigation into him is being led by German and Portuguese authorities, with the Met taking a background role.
In recent years the Grange team has been whittled down from 40 officers to just four detectives working under Det Chief Inspector Mark Cranwell, who also heads the Met’s cold case review unit.
They are also responsible for liaising with Madeleine’s parents Kate and Gerry, both 54, of Rothley, Leics, and keeping them informed of developments.
It is understood the McCanns are aware of the inquiry’s impending closure and have vowed to never stop their hunt to find Madeleine or establish her fate.
They are now likely to continue their quest with money from a fund set up by the pair with help from wealthy double-glazing businessman Brian Kennedy.
Latest accounts from January show “Madeline’s Fund: Leaving No Stone Unturned”’ has £931,350 after liabilities.
The 15th anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance falls this spring.
The case is still being treated by the Met as a missing person inquiry, despite German cops saying that Madeleine is presumed dead after being murdered.
She vanished while sleeping with her twin brother and sister in a bedroom as her parents dined with friends at a tapas bar nearby.
Madeleine would now be almost 19 and former Met detective chief inspector Mick Neville said last night it remains a possibility that she is still alive.
By Mick Neville
IT would seem the Met Police has run out of leads in the inquiry.
Much effort has been put on linking the crime to the convicted rapist and paedophile Christian B, but this has failed. No tangible proof has been produced he was ever involved.
German prosecutor Hans Wolters’ statements, that the authorities had “concrete evidence”, were misinterpreted here.
The phrase, in German, means the police have tangible reasons to suspect someone and can legally question them.
It does not mean hard proof as it does here. But there are still leads to be followed, with social media images and any CCTV footage from the time.
If Madeleine is alive, her face will appear somewhere. On a passport database — even if she has a new name — or on social media sites. Even if she has just been captured in the background of someone else’s photo.
We need answers. There are still excellent lines of inquiry to be made.

And now in all good Tabloids.
And since it repeated verbatim the "Official Story" the permissible "version of the Truth"
it may be supposed that the family are 'buoyed up' by the article.
Exclusive in the Olive Press soon ?
Or will he keep his head down,
since it is actually a report that there is insufficient evidence against his intended victim

So let’s now see the McCanns use their own money to continue the search, leaving no stone unturned.
I mean that’s what it’s there for, what else would it be used for. All that money kindly donated over the years by kindly people trying to help a poor little girl.

They could always get their lawyers to sue Metodo3 and Halligen and ALFAIG to get back the millions of pounds they wasted
and use the money to actually SEARCH . . .
Or perhaps not.
OR
and here's an idea They could pay Jon Clarke-Kent half a million to do some real investigating.
Or again, perhaps not.

Thank goodness for that, there was never any evidence against Brueckner.
There is plenty of evidence if they start looking where they are forbidden to look.
Hundred, maybe thousands of so called trolls, ex police and detectives, web sleuths, statement analysis's, cannot be wrong.
G Amaral, a seasoned detective, who is convinced the McCann's are involved , gave up his career because he was forbidden to properly investigate them.
Start looking in the right place and read Peter Mac's e book.

Re: END OF THE ROAD Madeleine McCann inquiry to END after 11 years as fears grow prime suspect WON’T be charged
it looks like the fine lines are set for the next months to go.
sounds a bit to much as a russian press look a like. still fake news. the truth can not be printed.
you can write dirty passages about the portuguese and the germans, but not about anyone who ever was a true suspect in the case.
using some truth, as in winning one round in the last series of court cases in portugal, to make it into a fantasy.
just forget they did not win the last round, and got some unwelcome statements from the courts.
i'm not looking out to see a lot of bungling reporters and so called journalists, who will be the best in keeping up the bucket of garbage without ending with some on their own heads.
at least portugal has still standing no crime established. the uk is nicely following that line as it looks. so what will the germans do.
will we get a second load of casefiles published in portugal, will grange end up in a nice police manual, and will the germans tell what concrete evidence is in their opinions.
nice job done keeping the culprits 15 years out of the hands of the law, just another victim that got lost in all of that. all for the bad and ugly who are more important and have to be protected. just failed one, but saved the arses of many more. the british press can look proudly back too. very nice assisting in following the orders.

using some truth, as in winning one round in the last series of court cases in portugal, to make it into a fantasy.
just forget they did not win the last round, and got some unwelcome statements from the courts.
i'm not looking out to see a lot of bungling reporters and so called journalists, who will be the best in keeping up the bucket of garbage without ending with some on their own heads.
at least portugal has still standing no crime established. the uk is nicely following that line as it looks. so what will the germans do.
will we get a second load of casefiles published in portugal, will grange end up in a nice police manual, and will the germans tell what concrete evidence is in their opinions.
nice job done keeping the culprits 15 years out of the hands of the law, just another victim that got lost in all of that. all for the bad and ugly who are more important and have to be protected. just failed one, but saved the arses of many more. the british press can look proudly back too. very nice assisting in following the orders.

Portuguese Statute of Limitations (15 years) hits this year I believe, although I may be wrong & the ECHR verdict is also scheduled for the first semester of this year, (by end of June),
Purely coincidental of course.

Maybe the MMRG could regurgitate Tony's letter to the Prime Minister calling for a Full Public Inquiry...
MF letter to David Cameron calling for a FULL PUBLIC ENQUIRY (2.10.10)
2nd MF letter to David Cameron re PUBLIC ENQUIRY INTO ALL ASPECTS OF MADELEINE'S DISAPPEARANCE

So we may look forward to a revelation on 30th April !
There is however NO statute of limitations in English law for Conspiracy to Pervert, Fraud, and various other High Crimes and Misdemeanours

I'm not a lawyer, I have little or no knowledge of the law - even less outside the British Isles (aside from the fact that it seems to be malleable when circumstances dictate), surely a country's statute of limitations applies only to the length of an active investigation?
If new credible evidence comes to light ??? a case can be re-opened - surely? Especially a case where evidence points to concealed death?
Or am I wrong ....

I strongly suspect this latest revelation to be a well orchestrated precursor to the forthcoming 15th anniversary.

Current funding runs out on March 31st, yet they have submitted a request for funding until the end of September.

Hold on a minute Mr Cranwell.
First let's get this straight, a £13M UK investigation into the disappearance of a British child is being closed down because you are frustrated that German cops have not succeeded in charging someone with something that you disagreed with in the first place. Am i reading this right Mr Plod? I would have have expected that the case would have closed because you had investigated all possible avenues, looked at all the evidence and decided that there was little left to do, not because some foreign cops failed to gather evidence on a possible suspect. Actually what have you been doing between Wolters was making his public allegations and the new documentaries being made, anything? We haven't heard anything that you have been investigating, were you really sitting back and letting the BKA get on with this? If so, what was the latest funding for? How was it spent?
Furthermore, your team has not investigated all lines of enquiry have they? A dossier of evidence pointing away from the abduction was presented to them very early on. I am sure that we were told that all lines of enquiry would be investigated no matter where the evidence took you.
I strongly suggest that before this case is closed, you spend a bit of time and money, thoroughly investigating that evidence. After all, if it is the taxpayers who has funded this charade, you owe it to them to at least carry out this task that may just lead somewhere if you choose to do it properly.
I feel a very strong petition coming on

Operation Grange
On 12 May 2011 the Met announced that, at the request of the Home Secretary, it had agreed to bring its particular expertise to the Madeleine McCann case.
The then Commissioner, Sir Paul Stephenson, considered the request and took the decision that on balance it was the right thing to do. This was subject to funding being made available by the Home Office, as this case is beyond the Met’s jurisdiction.
Investigative review
The Met’s involvement, known as Operation Grange, is led by the Specialist Crime Command unit and involved, in the first instance, an ‘investigative review’. This was a review of all of the investigations that had been previously conducted into the circumstances of Madeleine McCann’s disappearance.
Ongoing investigation
In July 2013 the status of the Met’s enquiries changed to that of an investigation, working with the Portuguese authorities to pursue specific lines of enquiry.
The Portuguese authorities retain the lead and the Met continues to work in support of them.
The Home Office continues to fund Operation Grange.

Funding for Operation Grange
Posted by: Home Office news team, Posted on: 5 June 2019 - Categories: Fact sheet, Leading stories
Clarification on the funding for Operation Grange.
There is continued interest from the media and the public concerning funding for Operation Grange, the Metropolitan Police Service’s (MPS) investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
We have received a request from the MPS to extend funding for Operation Grange until 31 March 2020. Funding for the investigation is provided by the Home Office through Special Grant funding which is usually available to police forces when they face significant or exceptional costs.
All applications for Special Grant funding are considered carefully on their individual merits, however, decisions are made in batches to allow us to better consider the impact on the overall policing budget.
Due to this, the next round of Special Grant funding will not be decided until October, however we have written to Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime in the meantime with assurance that the MPS will receive a similar level of funding for Operation Grange for 2019/20 as it did for the previous year.
Last year the Home Office provided £300,000 of funding to the MPS. The cost of Operation Grange to date is £11.75m.
Funding for Special Grant applications can be paid retrospectively for operational work already done in the same financial year. As usual, full details of any Special Grant awards in 2019/20 will be published after the end of the financial year.
The Home Office maintains an ongoing dialogue with the MPS regarding funding for Operation Grange.
When considering special grants applications, the Home Office does not take a view on whether an investigation should continue, which would be an operational matter for the police.
As this is an ongoing police investigation, questions about Operation Grange should be directed to the MPS.

Re: END OF THE ROAD Madeleine McCann inquiry to END after 11 years as fears grow prime suspect WON’T be charged
Just a thought but since the BKA allegedly claim that CB abducted and murdered Madeleine and it's been all over the press for the 2 years, how on earth could Op Grange possibly feed the media with any more "new lead" or "new suspect" stories without making themselves and BKA look even more foolish than they already do?
Has this BKA farce killed off Op Grange? Is this the real reason for closure? After all, it was Rebekah Brooks who blackmailed Dave Cameron and Theresa May into setting up to start with. Was this scam all about the media? Have they shot themselves in the foot with CB?

An ‘Abduction’ that was only staged.
A ‘Murder’ for which there is no evidence.
More Fabrications by the Press than any real ‘Concrete’ Evidence.
A total disgrace from the StA Wolters from start to finish.
But I doubt if any Heads will roll, or even Stand down over all this?

I often wondered why Operation Grange went on so long: 11 years and 44 weeks so far.
The European Court of Human Rights application looks likely to fail.
If it succeeds, so what?

As you know, I've always been an activist in terms of petitions, letters to top politicians and attorney-generals etc., Freedom of Information requests, and even...books - two of them!
But I'm stumped as to any practical way forward.
We are where we are.
Grange is closing.
Partly due to the work of members of CMOMM, tens, maybe hundreds of millions of people have read or watched items about Madeleine McCann and by now have a pretty shrewd idea what has happened to her.
The truth will eventually come out, on the Judgment Day.
The Apostle Paul wrote: "So, then, every one of us shall give account of himself to God.” Romans 14 v 12.
And, again, he also warned: "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.” 2 Corinthians 5 v 10.
Solemn words.
I believe not a single thing happens in God's universe without Him knowing about it.
He therefore knows the very moment that Madeleine perished because at that moment she was admitted to Paradise. I think it was on 29th April 2007. I wouldn't like to be in the McCanns' shoes when God asks them to 'give an account'.

There have been five prime ministers -- Brown, Blair, Cameron, May and Johnson since 2007.
If there has been a cover-up at the highest level, do we assume that all five are aware of what was/is being covered up? If so, how do they talk about it amongst themselves?
I am asking because I have absolutely no idea.

Re: END OF THE ROAD Madeleine McCann inquiry to END after 11 years as fears grow prime suspect WON’T be charged
There's also been the LibDem Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, who received a Knighthood for his political service which included knowing about the cover up of the death of three-year-old Madeleine McCann. The poisoned chalice was passed from Labour to the Tories/LibDems. He knew.
Clegg is now the President of Global Affairs at Facebook - a company that covers up the truth and banned the sitting President of the United States from having a voice.
People like Clegg don't care about facts and truth, not even for justice for a dead child.

As is another letter to the new Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police when he/she is appointed - but PeterMac's got that in hand.
We need to be able to say we've done absolutely everything we possibly can. Leave no stone unturned and all that - don't be a giveupski at this point in the proceedings there's still some cages left to be rattled.

Nothing to be lost by asking for a full public enquiry but I don't think we will get one.
If as suspected, the Government are implicated in the cover up in some way, it is not in their interest.
As for the end of the road for them, it's not the end of the road for us is it.
We can and must keep digging, whatever the outcome , to find out
what happened to Madeleine.
