A dog from Leicestershire Police has received an award for outstanding bravery after getting injured while trying to protect his handler. PD Astro, four-years-old, was announced winner at the national Thin Blue Paw Awards for police dogs on Thursday, September 22.
Pc Grace Feavyour, the German shepherd's handler also accepted the award after she was attacked while on duty in November last year. The 26-year-old, from Ashby, responded to an incident where a man was arrested at the scene.
Astro was hurt during the arrest when he jumped in to protect his fellow officer. Pc Feavyour said: "It was horrible to watch and I was so worried about Astro being hurt but, thankfully, he was okay".

"We were called to respond to an incident and arrested a man at the scene but when he resisted Astro leapt to defend me and was injured by the suspect. You can’t train for a real-life situation like that.
"There was so much going on and I had no idea how he’d react in that situation. Since then, I feel safer going out to work; I know that he’ll back me up no matter what.”
Astro was one of Leicestershire Police’s first puppies from its breeding programme and was 12-months-old when he joined forces with Pc Feavyour in July 2019. She added: “My partner was on the dog section until he recently retired and he’d had Astro since he was just a puppy. It made it extra special to have him as my first police dog.
"I’m so proud of him for winning this award, I wasn’t expecting it at all. He’s such a chilled dog but he’s always had that attitude.
"We took him away when he was only three-months-old and stayed in a yurt and he reacted to the noises he could hear outside. His heckles were up and he was barking; he’s always had that protective streak.
"My life is so easy with him; he just does what he needs to do – anything for his toy! He’s a great first police dog because he’s so steady; I feel really lucky to have him by my side.”
Inspector Cara Guest-Moore, from the force's Dogs and Firearms Unit, said the award was Astro's second award. She said: “Grace and Astro are a formidable duo and have become quite a crime fighting team.
"The loyalty Astro has for Grace has no bounds, putting himself at risk to protect his handler. Their hard work has brought them great recognition.
"Earlier this year, Astro was named as the force’s best Operational Police Dog in 2021 and now to be recognised nationally through the Thin Blue Paw Foundation for their teamwork and Astro’s bravery is a true honour and one I know Grace is very modest about".
Thin Blue Paw Foundation trustee Kieran Stanbridge said: “When confronted with a difficult and volatile situation, PD Astro showed how important his training is but also showed his bravery and loyalty to Grace.
"Dog handlers and their dogs have very special bonds and that is illustrated perfectly here, Astro jumped to Grace’s defence without a second thought and, despite being subjected to a violent attack, saw his job through to the end.
"He’s a very worthy winner of the Outstanding Bravery award".

Pebbles, world's oldest living dog and country music lover, dies at 22
The toy fox terrier, who was awarded the title by the Guinness World Records earlier this year, died of natural causes
By Flora Bowen 7 October 2022 • 10:44am
The world's oldest dog has died at the grand age of 22.
Pebbles, a toy fox terrier from South Carolina, died on October 3 of "natural causes", her owners said on Instagram. She was five months away from her 23rd birthday.
Guinness World Records awarded Pebbles the title of oldest living dog on May 17, 2022 when she was 22 years and 50 days old.
"Pebbles was not just another dog; she had her own way about her, and her own personality," said owners Julie and Bobb Gregory.
"She was a once in a lifetime companion, and it was our honor to have had the blessing to have had her as a pet, and family member.
"There was never anyone who met Pebbles that didn't love her. She will be deeply missed."
Born on March 28, 2000 on Long Island, Pebbles lived with the Gregorys in Taylors, South Carolina since 2007.
They celebrated her last birthday with a bubble bath and a stack of ribs.
Pebbles long outlived the typical life span of a Toy fox terriers, which live for around 13-15 years. She gave birth to 32 puppies with partner Rocky over three litters.
Although the Gregorys had originally planned to adopt a large dog, Pebbles charmed them straight away, Ms Gregory told Guinness World Records.
"She was jumping and barking so much at Bobby that he had no choice but to pick her up and check her out," she said. "It was instant love the second the two met."
Ms Gregory said Pebbles enjoyed trying new foods, being pampered, and listening to country music singers such as Conway Twitty and Dwight Yoakam.
"Thank you to everyone for your love and support for Pebbles throughout her life and her journey. She will be forever in our heart," the couple said.

The illustrious bbc.com has come up with an answer to the prevailing problem of animal waste, in particular for some reason they target dogs. I guess it's inevitable any solution to any given problem will be in some way connected to the mobile phone..
There are already moves afoot to tackle the issue of dog walking in certain areas across the UK.
There are evolutionary connotations here in so far as the recycling of bodily waste products are all part of natures rich cycle of survival. Where on earth (excuse the pun) do they think bird droppings go, pigs poop, cowpats, bat waste, elephant dung ??? But that's for another day.
The only species of earth that has access to the porcelain is the human being, even that was invented by man (or maybe woman if you look deep enough). Babies are not born with toilet accessory, they are taught by their elders to use a toilet, not go as and when bum and willy dictate. Other earthly species don't have that luxury, they go where and when.
What's the problem?
Dog lives matter !!!

Nine week old GSD puppy TPD Murphy. He has big paws to fill when he takes over from PD Geezer next year.
PD Shadow was deployed to an aggravated burglary where males had broken in to a property in balaclavas with weapons before running off. PD Shadow quickly located a male hiding in bushes who gave himself up when he saw PD Shadow and armed response approaching.
Overnight, PD Orbit has attended the scene of a traffic collision where the occupants have left the location. Orbit has tracked from the scene to the front door of an address. Once inside the registered keeper of the vehicle was located and arrested on suspicion of drink driving.
PD Shadow was deployed to a car that had been stolen from a driveway in Market Rasen. After over two hours of searching the drone located a heat source in a tree line and guided PD Shadow in where she located a male lying under some bushes trying to hide, One detained!
PD Fletcher was sent to a crashed vehicle to look for casualties. He made quick work of the task and picked up a scent within minutes. The driver gave himself up when he saw Fletch coming! Turns out he was hiding because he was drunk! 1 detained for drink driving.
PD Fletcher has been busy. Whilst in Skegness his handler wanted to speak to a driver but he decided he didn't want to stick around! He made the mistake of thinking two legs were a better escape option. 4 legs are faster than 2.. one detained for failing to stop and drink drive
TPD Bane...10 weeks old.
A vehicle tries to avoid our attention unsuccessfully before the driver tries his luck on foot. PD Orbit was deployed and the driver was detained. Orbit has then searched for the vehicles keys finding them discarded in a bush. Driver was arrested for a number of offences.
TPD Oscar 15 weeks old, already in the classroom.
TPD Oscar 15 weeks old after his first day in the classroom.
