Those unreliable dogs...
Someone really needs their bumps feeling because the dogs keep popping up doing all sorts of detection, from cancer to bombs.
Here's a new one, checking for diabetes..

I wonder if Dr Payne might invest in one of these dogs for his urology clinic?
Dogs Incredibly Accurate When Sniffing Out Cancer
May 20, 2014 | by Lisa Winter
Dogs, bees, and fruit flies are some animals that can literally sniff out cancer. It's hoped that by understanding how these animals are able to make these positive identifications, scientists can then develop an “electronic nose” which would provide a fast, noninvasive screening for cancers. A new study presented by lead author Gian Luigi Taverna of the Humanitas Research Hospital in Milan has provided evidence of two dogs able to sniff out prostate cancer with exceptional accuracy. The findings were presented Sunday, May 18th at the Annual Meeting of the American Urological Association in Orlando, Reuters reported.
As early detection is critical for overcoming cancer, it is best to discover anomalies before patients become symptomatic, which isn’t always feasible. Certain diseases, such as pancreatic or ovarian cancer, do not become symptomatic until 5-year survival rates are dangerously low. Processing blood or urine tests are slow and costly, making them a poor choice for a routine screening.
Certain animals have advanced olfactory senses which allow them to smell and identify the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) associated with certain cancers when exposed to breath or urine samples. Animals like dogs can be trained to respond in a certain way to indicate the presence of disease, while some fruit flies have been genetically engineered to glow when they find certain VOCs.
The Italian researchers used two German Shepherds who had previously received training to seek out bombs. After five months of positive reinforcement training, the dogs were tested on 430 urine samples and were tasked with identifying prostate cancer. Of the 430 samples, 200 came from patients with known prostate cancer, and the other 230 served as a control. One dog was able to identify the prostate cancer patients with 100% accuracy and the controls with 98% accuracy. The other dog also did quite well, by identifying disease with 98.6% accuracy and ruled out controls 96.4% of the time. Further study will be needed to verify these findings, such as using different trained dogs and different samples.
While your family doctor probably isn’t likely to put a dog on staff to come around and sniff you during your annual check up, scientists have a lot to learn about how these VOCs are sensed. Dogs have about 40 times as many olfactory cells than humans, leaving us a lot to learn about how these trace odors are perceived. Currently, different laboratories around the world are using animals to help detect bladder, ovarian, breast, lung, and prostate cancer. The end goal of this field of research is to develop a device that blends mass spectrometry and gas chromatography that can analyze laboratory samples quickly and easily.

Michael Graydons body traced by dogs!
http://www.itv.com/news/west/story/2015-03-06/michael-graydons-body-found-in-monaco/
Boxing promoter Michael Graydon's family have told ITV News that Police in Monaco have found his body down a 'deep hole'.
Yesterday sniffer dogs tracked Michael Graydon's scent from La Rascasse nightclub to a church where he was last seen on CCTV nearly two weeks ago.
This morning police and fire crews searched the area and his body was found down a deep hole.
His body was discovered yesterday, after sniffer dogs led search teams to a ravine.
"It is with sadness that we can confirm that Michael our brother, friend, cousin, son, uncle and Dad has been found in a deep ravine, in Monaco in the area where he was last seen.
The sniffer dog that traced his last steps on Thursday 5 March, led the investigators to the hole. This prompted the Fire Brigade to extend their search that was carried out on Friday 6 March."

They are so close to infallible that to argue anything other would need serious amounts of evidence.
The false positives they 'appear' to give are usually because human detection systems and man-made machines are not sufficiently sensitive to confirm the dog's alert.
There is no question that the dogs alerted to blood and human cadaverine in Apartment 5A
and on other items associated with the McCanns
AND TO NO OTHER places or items.

I wonder how differently events may have unfolded if the dogs were brought in on 3/05/07. I also wonder if the tracker dogs picked up on cadaverine but was ignored because the focus was on finding a live Madeleine.

Totally unreliable. Obviously
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2988685/The-dog-sniffs-thyroid-cancer-Frankie-German-Shepard-detects-disease-88-cent-accuracy.html
The dog that can sniff out thyroid cancer: Frankie the German Shepherd detects the disease ‘with 88 per cent accuracy’
Frankie was trained to lie down after smelling thyroid cancer in urine
Dogs have a sense of smell that is 10 times better than that of humans
On 34 patients, Frankie gave 2 false positives and 2 incorrect 'all-clears'
Scientists don't yet know what dogs can smell when they detect cancer
Finding out could help create an 'electronic nose' to diagnose disease

Dogs are impersonal and not capable of lying. They just do what they are trained to do and have an exemplary records to prove they got it right all the time.
Yet, in this case, Gerry expects the world to believe his words that "dogs are notoriously unreliable". Why did he not advocate for Police to stop using dogs in investigation operations since he did not believe in the value of dogs, like he advocates to curtail free speech?
Dogs are Police and Immigration Authority invaluable working partner (or tool). Invariably they are used all the time to search for missing person/body or used in different contexts and situations for drugs detection, counterfiet goods detection and remains detection.
There is no indication that Police would want to make this operating method redundant so I would be surprised if Police do not give the dogs credence in the Mccanns case. They must know what happened to Madeleine....at the very least they know she is died....

Cadaver dogs to search ‘boys school’ property in Okeechobee
By Eric Kopp
Okeechobee News
Last Modified: Apr 1, 2015 12:00PM
OKEECHOBEE — In hopes he can put an end to the rumors, a local detective has enlisted the help of five cadaver K-9s to search 21 acres on the grounds of the old Okeechobee School for Boys on U.S. 441 N.
The school is currently operated by G4S Facilities Management and is known as the Okeechobee Youth Development Center and Intensive Halfway House. It was operated by the state until 1982 when the Eckerd Foundation took it over and renamed it the Eckerd Youth Development Center (EYDC).
In those early days the state not only had the reform school in Okeechobee, but also the Florida School for Boys in Marianna.
In recent years many men, who were sent to those institutions have come forward to detail the beatings and sexual molestations that were perpetuated by adult men who worked at the schools.
And, after bodies were unearthed at the Marianna school, which is also known as the Dozier School for Boys, Detective Captain John Rhoden, of the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO), decided it’s time to search the local facility.
Capt. Rhoden said the cadaver dogs will be brought to Okeechobee and will search the grounds April 14, 15 and 16. It is his hope to either dispel stories about boys who were killed and buried on the school’s grounds, or find those bodies and give their families some closure.
While there was no infamous White House at the Okeechobee school, there were two rooms — the library and the adjustment room — where boys were sodomized or beaten with a strap.
One local man recounted being beaten by a strap made out of a tire that was 4- to 5-inches wide, 2- to 3-feet long and had silver dollars embedded in it. That man, now deceased, detailed the beating in a 2009 interview. He said he had no idea how many times the strap lashed across his buttocks, his back and the back of his legs as he laid on an iron bed.
“I wasn’t counting. All I wanted was for him to stop,” said the then-61-year-old man with his head bowed and tears dripping from his eyes.
Many men have come forward in recent years to tell their horrible stories of physical and sexual abuse that went on in the 1940s, ’50s and early ’60s at the two schools.
Many of those men at Marianna are now known as the White House Boys. They were the ones taken to the White House and beaten until they bled and their clothing became embedded in the cuts. As those boys laid on an iron bed and braced themselves for the beating to start, they would have to listen to the men as they made bets on who would be the first to draw blood.
Capt. Rhoden, who began his investigation in May of last year, recently toured the Marianna school and the White House.
The veteran law enforcement officer with over 30 years of service has seen nearly everything imaginable. But there was nothing to compare to walking into the White House.
“It was an eerie feeling. That building is different than any other building up there. That building is cold. It’s cold,” he said, as his voice trailed off.
He said a couple of the dogs to be used locally were also used in Marianna.
While the stories about boys being beaten to death or shot still swirl, Capt. Rhoden said it’s time to find the bodies or quell the stories.
In short, he said, the search “... is to bring an end to everything.”
In other words they will believe whatever the dogs indicate

The French Gendarmerie are even taking dogs up to the aircrash site in the Alps to help in the search...why would they bother ? They're so unreliable, aren't they ??? (Not).

Re: Those unreliable dogs...
A dog can be trained to sniff just about anything. Why would any parent of a missing child ignore the findings of a sniffer dog?
It would be a crushing blow to find that cadaver scent was found in the apartment where your child went missing. It would be enough to send a parent off their head. Not the McCanns, they continued to say Madeleine is alive and findable.
The dogs in question were sent care of UK. The dogs and their handler had an outstanding track record. The dogs did not come from a 'bungling' Portuguese investigation trying to fit up the McCanns as the media and 'sources' would have you believe.

Girlfriend charged with murder after claiming dog shot boyfriend
Tyaina Finch told police gun went off after she spotted it in dog’s mouth – but later changed her story
JAMES DUNN Sunday 05 April 2015
A woman who told police that her dog shot her off-duty officer boyfriend has been charged with his murder.
Tyaina Finch, 27, originally told police that the gun had gone off accidentally as she tried to wrestle it from her dog’s mouth.
Her partner, Mark Hudson, 26, was killed in the incident in his own home in Philadelphia.
Authorities say that he was trying to break up with Tyaina at the time, reports local news channel 6ABC.
She later changed her story, claiming that she’d used the gun against him in self-defence.
Hudson, who had worked as a police officer for four years, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Yesterday, around 1,000 people turned out to pay respects for the officer, who had served his Darby Borough community since joining the fire service aged 16, before signing up to the force.
She was also charged with aggravated assault after allegedly threatening boyfriend Mark Hudson with a knife last summer.
District Attorney Jack Whelan described the couple's relationship as 'tumultuous' and Finch's statements to police as 'inconsistent', reports The Mirror.
He said: 'We believe she acted on this particular day with specific intent to kill.'
And she wanted the police to believe her !

According to one doctor in Leicester dogs are "notoriously unreliable". The rest of the world knows that they are the most loving and reliable friends we could wish for. All they ask is to be treated properly and with respect. They can detect melanomas, kidney cancers, predict diabetic incidents, find people buried in rubble, find bombs, drugs, explosives . . there is a huge list of their incredible achievements.

And given the other things you have said, that is saying something.

Re: Those unreliable dogs...
British dogs have just left for Nepal.
2 million people are unaccounted for.
The official death and injury stats seem only to cover those bits of Katmandhu which have so far been searched.
Some of the mountain villages seem to have been almost totally destroyed.
And there were 1,000 or so on Everest. Everything above Base camp is now cut off, as the ice fall has collapsed.
So, Gerry, or anyone else from that disfunction family reading this - Philomena ? - why would the world devote logistics to taking "Notoriously unreliable" dogs all the way out there ?

Take a look at the dogs findings in these cases. Some things just don't add up.
And dogs don't lie, unlike people.

Re: Those unreliable dogs...
Snipped from link below. There are many other sights on the internet with similar observations however.
------
Before we join the jury for a visit to USAF Lakenheath at the beginning of week two, let us close the book forever on the Soham crime scene, by borrowing witness WPC Anna Burton, who actually appeared in court much later on 14 November. WPC Burton is a police dog handler who attended Soham Village during Sunday evening to assist in searching for the missing girls. Her trained tracker dog had Holly Wells' scent, and for a while the pair searched around the village without any success. Then just after midnight, WPC Burton bumped into Ian Huntley near Soham College.
“It was wonderful to run into the caretaker because he would know the layout of the place and he had offered to help look around”… "I just thanked him and said I was very grateful for his help, particularly because of the fact it was so late” WPC Burton told how she able to ask Huntley about buildings having alarms, and they spent an hour going round the site together, only going inside buildings if they were unlocked, meaning Holly and Jessica could have got inside.
WPC Burton asked him what the hangar building was, where the court has heard the charred remnants of the girls’ clothes were later found hidden in a bin, and was told it was a Groundsman’s building. She asked if he had the keys and was told he did not. WPC Burton let her dog sniff round the outside of the building, but said it drew no reaction.
The seminal clue here is not that WPC Burton’s trained police dog failed to react to the hangar building where the substitute red shirts would later be planted, but because the dog completely failed to react to Ian Huntley himself. Remember that the dog was following Holly Wells’ scent, and then came into very close proximity to the man who stands accused of attacking and murdering Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman just a few hours earlier, and is then alleged to have traveled in a car with their corpses all the way to Lakenheath. Believe me, if Huntley had been anywhere near Holly Wells at any time during the evening, WPC Burton’s trained dog would have picked it up in seconds. So let me repeat that one more time, the highly-trained police tracker dog failed to react in close proximity to Ian Huntley.
In summary then, before we set off for Lakenheath with the jury, the Soham crime scene has proved absolutely no connection between Ian Huntley, and either Holly Wells or Jessica Chapman. The prosecution claims both girls were inside Huntley’s house, but the total lack of DNA proves they were not. The prosecution claims both girls were inside Huntley’s car, but the total lack of DNA proves they were not. A highly trained police tracker dog following Holly Wells’ scent on the night of the incident, does not react at all when placed in close proximity to the alleged murderer.

Re: Those unreliable dogs...
Possibly a cadaver dog would have reacted to Huntley but not a tracker dog. Total lack of DNA - surely Huntley was cleaning the car the next day and had weeks I believe to do some more cleaning.
By the time Huntley showed the WPC round he had not yet put the clothes in the incinerator. His house was not searched till much later. Can't blame the dog imo.

Those bloody dogs again:

Met dogs star in film with tennis ace Andy Murray

With The Championships, Wimbledon taking place a week later than on past occasions, the Met has used this opportunity to undertake additional training and searches within the grounds. Search dogs and their handlers are a regular sight in the lead up to the tournament beginning and this caught the attention of the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) and WWF.
Snips:
Five year-old English Springer Spaniel Ike who is one of the Met’s most experienced search dogs and five eight-week-old puppies have starred alongside Wimbledon Champion and WWF global ambassador Andy Murray in a social media campaign highlighting the fight against poaching and the illegal wildlife trade.
The campaign will launch on Monday, 29 June, with a video starring Ike and Andy. This will be followed later on in The Championships with a second video with Andy and the five Cocker Spaniel puppies, Marigold, Marvin, Matilda, Misha and Maramaduke.
Filming took place last week within the famous grounds and Ike’s searching skills were called upon to find a tennis ball belonging to Andy.
Ike was bred by another police force and his official kennel name is ‘Icon’-hence the name Ike - and he has been with his handler since he was one-year-old. Now considered a pro, Ike thoroughly enjoys work and his search skills were put to the test during the Commonwealth Games and Olympics. He has searched almost all of London’s iconic sites including the Palace of Westminster, Downing Street and Buckingham Palace.

Re: Those unreliable dogs...
Two more cases where Eddie alerted and was proven to be correct years later:
The Sam Parker case (Sept 2007, not long after Martin and the dogs were in PDL)
Adrian Prout case. Prout was a NOT suspect x 3 & WAS a suspect x 3 so pros chuntering on about McCanns being 'not suspects' means zilch.
The only reason police officers and Eddie did not find her body initially after he alerted in the lounge was because Prout had used digging equipment to bury his wife's body under a pheasant pen wrapped in an impermeable membrane.

And another one
http://news.sky.com/story/1512836/human-remains-found-inside-apartment-wall
Worth stressing yet again, for the anti-dog people - who won't accept or understand this point anyway -
The dog alerted.
Then the officers found the body.
So the dog's alert will not have any place in the court case.
The officer will state "At Time, Day, Date I recovered the remains . . . "
Th face that a 100% reliable dog told him where to look is legally irrelevant.
But does not alter the fact of the 100% reliability
Human Remains Found Inside Apartment Wall
Family members say they fear the body is that of Raven Joy Campbell, 31, who disappeared in Lomita, California, in 2009.

Raven Joy Campbell went missing in 2009
Human remains have been found inside the walls of an apartment building in California after a tip off to police.
Coroner's office officials went to the property in Lomita and cadaver dogs gave a "positive alert" for a body.
The family of Raven Joy Campbell, 31, who disappeared in 2009 after she was last seen leaving the apartment at the Harbor Hills Housing Project, has said they believe the body to be hers.
The body was discovered after a tip off to police last week
Malaikah Manasseh, Ms Campbell's sister, told CBS News: "The body has to be hers, there's no question."
She added: "We held out hope because [authorities] said she wasn't here."
Cousin Linda Campbell Humphrey told the Los Angeles Times: "I have a gut feeling it's her. I have such a feeling in my stomach."

Lieutenant Steve Jauch, of Los Angeles Sheriff's Department, did not comment on the identity of the body.
He said: "It's not fair for me to get their hopes up or dash their hopes. I'll have to wait for the process.
"I don't know how long the victim has been here, I just don't know."
The sheriff's department said it had received a call that there might be a body in the wall cavity behind stairs in the building last Wednesday.
Neighbours claimed that people living in the apartment complex have complained of a terrible smell near where the body was found.
Residents have been evacuated from the properties and yellow police tape has blocked off a section of the complex.
