195new leads! Chuckle :^))
Fact.
On any given murder enquiry - or review for that matter - tasks are 'actioned out', and an 'action' means exactly that an action to be done, to be investigated by a DC or DS who is the legman. A good legman or good group of legmen wil solve a case despite the direction a SIO may want to take it.! He has the ultimate say, but ultimately relies entirely on the quality, diligence and intuition of the men carrying out the actions. His arrogance or lack thereof may tell him otherwise, but it is so. He therefore is in a position to, if so desired or as a result of natural incompetence, to confound any investigation
So,, an action, is a line of enquiry. Nothing more. From that tendril other threads grow.
When the line of enquiry or action is complete it is marked as such and no further actions will be generated from that specific thread unless new info comes to light. The thread is closed and the web becomes smaller.
Any given murder enquiry, if handled proficiently and competently, can and will generate thousands of actions, most of them both pointless and fruitless, but often necessary if only as a shield against later defense.
So is an 'action' a 'new lead'?? Are say 195 outstanding, unresolved actions 'new leads'? If so, is that normal?? That's the big question eh?
You could argue it is, but I should prefer to say such a comparison is utter bollox.
One could equally argue that if an action is a new lead, then it's about time the troops got their finger out and reduced some of these 195 outstanding enquiries.
They can't all be pointing in the right direction eh?
Either that, or sack the SIO for all is now out of hand. It is not at all possible to be remotely in command of such a situation with so many 'new leads'. It is not. So many chickens without heads. It (195) is a statement designed to create confidence in the majority but is a signal of incompetence or worse to others. In reality, after one year, lemmings with no cliff.
Or simply a pretty number designed to paint a picture of diligence, authority and command?? Or perhaps, just perhaps a normal amount of outstanding actions??
Or *new leads*?
You decide.

New Madeleine Leads Slammed As 'Speculation'
Martin Brunt
April 26, 2012 8:39 PM
After the positive thrust of Scotland Yard's ongoing review of the Madeleine McCann case comes a damning statement from the Portuguese Attorney-General.
The Yard said it had found 195 leads worth following up - mostly from the abandoned Portuguese inquiry - and urged the Lisbon judiciary to reopen the case.
But Portugal's legal chief says: "the case will only be reopened if there are credible and relevant new facts, not mere hypotheses and speculation.
Ouch!
A new Portuguese government was said to be more willing than the last to consider reopening the investigation, given the widespread criticism of the original and failed inquiry.
Even my old friend Amaral, fired for criticising the Brits, admitted this week that he could have done better when he headed the first investigation.

Brunty at it again saying Mr Amaral was fired. As far as I know Mr Amaral wasn't fired, he was moved, then retired to write the book to put his side of the case.

apart from the fact I think this is a load of old codswallop I love the fact that it has dismissed the caseloads of files taken from Metodo3. I needed a laugh after the Mcnanorama show and bless Blunt he's provided it.

Here is the statement from SY in response to the AG saying he won't re-open the case...
Scotland Yard released a statement in response that said: "We still do believe there are matters which need to be considered and we are currently seeking a more formal way of addressing this."
However, Mr Do Carmo said the Portuguese police had received "no formal request for the reopening of the inquiry".
Sky reporter Martin Brunt said the attorney-general's statement effectively "trashed what Scotland Yard was saying".
"It's just developing into a bit of a war of words," he said.

More formal eh. Rather than announcing it on British TV when the Portuguese hadn't even been asked they mean then.

I care not what the likes of the FickleBrunt and others say.
SY do not have 195 'new lead's. They don't. This is grossly misleading.
They have perhaps 195 outstanding actions, actions which for whatever reason are incomplete and may, Lord preserve us, may one day be finished.
They are 195 exaggerations designed to imply the investigative team are both fruitful an clever.
They are in fact, without any shadow of a doubt, just lines of enquiry that will run their course.
It's a very important point, because this figure of 195 vs 0, well, it paints SY as supermen and the PJ as incompetent ***** does it not?

If there is 195 new leads....why isn't the fund/foundation that the public have been begged to contribute to in the name of the search (leaving no stone unturned) used to follow up these leads? This is what the money begged was donated to be used for

Re: ***LIVE*** Discussion and comments thread BBC Panorama tonight 25th April 7.30pm
After reading the many posts on the Panorama programme and having more time to think about what I saw last night I have come to only one conclusion. There was absolutely NO need for that documentary. It said nothing; it changed nothing (in terms of finding the truth for Madeleine). SY were talking about a case review that isn't over!!!! The usual people i.e. media and the likes of Brunt are spouting xenophobic tosh and this forum is on fire with disgust and being made to look like we are nutters/zealots. Oh my, when will Madeleine ever have justice.
As for Redwood saying something like it is a privilege to be working on the case, what a bloody bizarre thing is that to say. It's a case. A case to be solved like any other case. A case that if it weren't Madeleine wouldn't have been on McNanorama before its conclusion. As for the appeal to the public well that could have been done on Crimewatch for the last five years couldn't it? Team McCann could have paid for TV advertising from the McFund over five years couldn't they?
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

exactly aquila and the new photo could have been done as soon as review began aged 8 not 9 and put out to help find her as that is SYs stated aim... no, its prodcued in tandem with an anniversary.
Bilton you were right to look at 5a and say you think of what might have happened there and that it seems still full of questions.

aquila,
Oh it's a privilege alright, make no mistake. One of the highest profile cases in the last couple of decades.
The question re Redwood is......
Are you the man that wants the privilege of solving the case....
Or the privileged man who dances to the pipers disgusting tune?
It's not easy we can see
It's up to you Mr Redwood
Whether you draw your line in the sand or water
But for fecks sake get rid of the tutu and doff a deerstalker....

Why has Team McCann never PAID for tv advertising to find Madeleine? The Fund has spent thousands on suing people...why not spend that money on advertising on tv in a legitimate way? lots of charities advertise so how come the McFund don't? funny ain't it?

Lets do some mathematics
195 Leads devided by 27 members of european union=
7 Leads by country of european union(Included Portugal)
Com'on
SY they are making themself a laughing stock,
they should have taken lesson from that case of the Mc VS Tony B, about breach of agreement, where the Judge have ordered Carter Ruck to cut down to 25 the number of those breachs of agreement instead of 125

Re: ***LIVE*** Discussion and comments thread BBC Panorama tonight 25th April 7.30pm
The recent media show has left me both indignant and disgusted. So what has it achieved?
It tried to justify the time and the public resources spent on the review by citing the 195 fresh leads and producing an age progressed photo.
It tried to defend the SY's competence largely by rubbishing the PJ.
It tried to persuade the less informed public of the McCanns' innocence and promote the abduction theory by selective reporting.
It tried to draw public attention to the anniversary, KM's book and their continuing plight.
It tried to misinform about certain known facts.
It tried to hype the event further by constantly dripfeeding the press in advance and by the sudden schedule change.
I feel truly ashamed by the British media and the establishment behind this blatant propaganda. Truth and justice appears to be the last thing on their minds. How much more dignified the Portuguese response in contrast by not rising to the bait.

And on that note, I will take my certain leave.
I should think that there was a very good reason why he didn't ask them, in the form of Carter Ruck. I am sure that it has not gone unnoticed that Carter Ruck have been involved in one or two court cases on behalf of the McCanns. Anyone making a programme about the case was always going to have to be very careful about what they said and how they said it, for fear of attracting CR's attention.
We have all read the case files, know about the evidence, the inconsistencies etc, but just imagine for one moment that you didn't. If you had only heard the McCann/Press view of events, then the programme raised a number of important points
Gave the conclusions of the official investigation in writing on screen
Showed video of the dogs alerting.
Interviewed Goncalo Amaral and showed his book.
Stated that Portuguese public opinion is firmly against the McCanns
Raised elements of doubt about the case
Redwood gave nothing away about the findings of the investigation on the programme
[list][*]
I think given the constraints that the BBC were working with that actually they did a pretty good job of raising a lot of the issues, but leaving a lot unsaid to enable people to make their own conclusions.
Yes I am sure there was a lot of selective editing, and that Goncalo didn't just say he had made mistakes without clarifying that those mistakes were listening to the abduction theory, and I am sure Sandra will not be happy with how she was presented, but seriously, what did you expect? They could not be too controversial. I don't think it was the total disaster that a lot of you seem to think!

There is an interesting post on Joana Morais.
Essentially it follows what some of us have been thinking for some time.
I paraphrase-
IF Madeleine were alive and capable of being found the entire force of the review should be directed towards that.
Every lead must be followed up to its conclusion.
Only when it is absolutely clear that nothing further can be done in that direction should the review look at the possibility of her death.
To use only half his resources on finding her alive would leave Redwood open to the most severe criticism.
He states that only 25% of the work has so far been done.
I do not think we need to be too pessimistic.
If Madeleine can be found alive she must be. No one disagrees with that proposition.
