Metropolitan Police corruption suspensions near 50 over two years

Nearly 50 Metropolitan police officers and 26 staff members have been suspended for alleged corruption in the past two years, figures show.
Of the 47 officers, eleven were convicted, a Freedom of Information request revealed.
A total of 222 officers were suspended between 2012 and 2014, with alleged corruption cited as the main reason.
The Met said suspensions did not imply guilt, but all allegations were "taken extremely seriously".
The revelation follows a report by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) which warns "the threat to the Met of corrupt activity remains significant".............

HMIC's report said while corruption in the force had previously involved "pockets of officers in specialist squads who had corrupt associations with criminals", today the Directorate of Professional Standards considers the biggest threat to be "exploitation of staff through inappropriate relationships with journalists, private investigators and criminals".
The report said: "Members of the Met workforce continue to be investigated, arrested and convicted for serious criminality and improper disclosure of information.
"The threat to the Met of corrupt activity remains significant"............

'Small fry'

Solicitor Raju Bhatt, who acts for Mr Morgan's family and other complainants against the police, said: "The routine case that we see is where police officers have perhaps been over-zealous, overstepped the mark and, after the event, abused their power to try to cover up that initial wrongdoing.
"That's something we see very routinely but that's not classed as corruption."
He said he believed the Met should do more to tackle corruption among higher ranking officers, claiming: "Instead of looking where the real problem is, it's easier to look at the small fry."
A Met spokesman said the force "expects a high level of conduct and behaviour from officers and staff and any breaches of these standards will be dealt with".
"The number of police officers suspended represents a very small percentage of the police officers and members of police staff employed by the Met."

It is thought that the UK Police are playing it "cool", with regard to their investigation and they are in the final stages to a conclusion?
One thing to note is the absence from the public recently of Sir Bernard Hogan Howe, his no show to child abuse panel, is he about to retire early after his comments on "Stop and Search" procedures, at odds with the present Home Secretary, Theresa May of whom Rebekah Brooks wanted to make an example of, on crime and disorder issues, eh Rebekah on behalf of dear Rupert? Leveson, "Persauded" dodgy Dave did you?
Yes, that Rebekah Brooks who, along with Andy Coulson, told an enquiry committee how they offered money for stories to UK Police Officers and stated that it was following legal procedures with regard to the payments?

Not that I believe that "innocent crecheman" ever existed but, if he had, he could have been one who didn't take a blanket.

Granted, during the months of let's say July and August when the weather is more conducive, perhaps it wouldn't be unusual to see a parent carrying an uncovered child through the streets between the crèche and their accommodation - but the beginning of May, when nights are cold enough for an adult to wear a jacket? .. He was wearing linen type cloth trousers, beige to golden in colour, a "duffy" type jacket (but not that thick). His shoes were dark in colour, classic type. He had a hurried walk. He was carrying a child, who was lying on both his arms, in front of his chest. By the way he was dressed, he gave her the impression that he was not a tourist, because he was very "warmly dressed"..

All I can say, he must be a rubbish parent if he was dressed for the cold but carried a child wearing only pyjamas through the streets on a cold night.

I wonder if it ever occurred to Andy Redwood to ask his 'revelation moment' why he was carrying a child in a horizontal position - or is that also considered normal?

Also those pyjamas,were nothing like the marks and spencers one worn and shown a lot earlier . The top of his kept ones looked likefleece top and bottoms were not same as ones she would have worn .There is a photo of the the true ones somewhere ,take a look at both .if you can . joyce1938

Did anyone ever explain why Crecheman had to be hunted for , given the fact that he was' SO 'like the sketch of him and that the pyjamas were ' SO 'like the ones described and that he was in PDL with his daughter at the same complex on the night in question? Has he been in a cave? On a lunar expedition? Did he go on holiday alone? Why did none of his friends or relatives say 'Ooh you have just come back from your holiday there...did you see the McCanns?'

Is this credible?

Looking at the size of the fleece type pjs I wonder what size the child would have been, pretty big imo. Would the father really have been able to carry a child of that size in the manner described?

Nothing like the pjs Maddie was wearing and as joyce rightly asks, how was that supposed to go unnoticed?

Care to explain, Sir Bernard Hogan Howe and the 81 G4S and 31 full time Maddie cops, with no arrests or suspects of a crime after 5 years of investigation costing £12-15 million?

After so long and all the hopes we had at one time, and new enquiries. It seems a bit hopeless now. So much been ignored from Mcfiles, what more is there? Sorry to sound like this. I guess we shall all go on and on, but a good many have stopped over these few years. joyce1938

Yes, Joyce, many people have drifted away having lost interest, but they soon come back when there is news, especially major news. Look how many people were online here when the Crimewatch programme was aired: more than 2500! And many will return when there is news from Portugal re Amaral.

Nothing of note is happening at the moment and many people know that the death of Madeleine is being covered up.

Following the special 2013 Crimewatch production, when ex-DCI Redwood proclaimed his legacy for years of policing, his 'exciting revelation moment' focusing on e-fits of two different men, produced in conjunction with two witnesses - this Madeleine McCann appeal was launched in March 2014 - only 4-5 months after the Crimewatch appeal..

Maybe things will gain momentum after Amaral's appeal result is announced. Why is this taking so long? We still have 2 investigations 'active' which will have to come to some conclusion...
It has gone very quiet lately but there is nothing much to comment on - although its still worthwhile going over the stuff we know about from police files ..

Hi Mr Noodles. I have just watched the video from March 2014 and all I can say about what DCI Andy (I was just following orders) Redwood is that he must be reading tea leaves on his revolutionary moments on at least two occasions, along with the Crimewatch programme October 2013?
If this was one of the finest from Scotland Yard and I was a solicitor acting on behalf of my clients, you would seriously question some convictions if they relate to this officer's case evidence with reference to Operation Grange farce, G4S scapegoats, "it wasn't down to us Guv!?"
It was the smelly "Bin Man" that left no traceable evidence wearing big rubber gloves that done it?

Carrying ID card with his photo on it but with a goatee beard, clipboard or pad and receipt book.

Appeal

The investigation team need to identify and speak to these people.

1. Are any of these men you? Do you know who they are? Have you seen them?
2. Were you in Praia da Luz on or around 3rd May 2007 and have not yet spoken to the police.
3. Were you a victim of a previously unreported crime or approached by a charity collector in this area.

Madeleine McCann: police get almost 1,000 responses to Crimewatch appeal

Several people name same individual who they say matches description of man whose efit was released.

Detectives investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann from a Portuguese holiday resort in 2007 have received almost 1,000 phone calls and emails from the public after their fresh appeal on Crimewatch for information.

A number of people have provided police with the same name of an individual who they believe matches the description of a man seen carrying a young child away from the resort in Praia da Luz towards the beach area at what detectives now believe is a crucial time the night Madeleine vanished.

More than 700 people called the appeal numbers and more than 20 people emailed information after police released new efit images of possible suspects, Scotland Yard said, in what the senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood said was an "overwhelming response".

Detectives on the Metropolitan police inquiry believe the disappearance of Madeleine bears all the hallmarks of a "pre-planned abduction". In a significant development the Met police team has ruled out a sighting of a man carrying a child who was treated for six years as the prime suspect in the case. They now believe that individual was an innocent British tourist, carrying his child from the night creche on the resort back to his apartment.

The elimination of that suspect has focused attention on to another sighting later in the evening of a dark-haired man carrying a child with blond hair, possibly wearing pyjamas, towards the beach in the town. The shift in emphasis has raised the possibility that Madeleine's mother, Kate McCann, could have missed her abductor by minutes when she went to check on the child and her siblings in the family's apartment in a holiday resort in Praia da Luz at 10pm on the night she was taken.

At around the same time an Irish family saw a man aged between 20 and 40 with brown hair carrying a young child with blond hair dressed in pyjamas towards the beach in the town. They produced an efit of the individual in 2008 for private detectives hired by the McCanns but the image was only made public this week by the Met police who are leading the new investigation into the child's abduction in a £5m inquiry being paid for by the Home Office.

The publication of efits of the man has led to a huge response from the public, with a number of people providing the same name for the individual, it is understood. Police say among those who have contacted them are tourists who were at the resort at the time of Madeleine's disappearance, but have never spoken to investigators before.

Redwood said he was "extremely pleased" with the response to the programme. "We will now take the time to follow up these lines of inquiry."

Madeleine was nearly four when she went missing on 3 May 2007 from the ground-floor holiday apartment in the Ocean Complex while her parents dined with friends at a nearby restaurant. Redwood believes the child may have been abducted in an organised, planned operation by a group of individuals who might have checked out the layout of the resort in the days before. Redwood said one reading of the evidence was that it was a kidnapping which had "all the hallmarks of a pre-planned abduction that would have undoubtedly involved reconnaissance".

Police are also pursuing links to a sharp rise in burglaries in the area, and bogus charity workers approaching individuals on the resort. Efits of a fair-haired man said to have been seen "lurking around" the apartment have also been issued. The man could be Dutch or German.

Appeals are to be made in the coming days in Germany, the Netherlands and Ireland.

The Crimewatch editor, Joe Mather, said those calling the programme included many British people who were in Praia da Luz at the time of the child's disappearance. Some had given police new names, and the same name had been mentioned several times. "It's been a truly unprecedented response," he said. "We were genuinely pleased with the response and the police were too."

Mather said he could not reveal new lines of inquiry but it was "always significant" if people called in with the same name of an individual.

New leads could be hampered by the fact that there are no plans to show the fresh appeal for information in Portugal, according to the criminologist Mark Williams-Thomas, a former police officer and child protection expert.

British officers needed to resolve their differences with Portuguese police in order for the investigation to make a breakthrough, Williams-Thomas told BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Tuesday. "We need to get [the Portuguese police] to show the appeal, set aside their political differences, set aside their pride and get to the position where [the forces] are both focused, working together."

Redwood said: "Our appeal continues and later today I will be travelling to Holland, and tomorrow Germany, to continue the appeal for information.

"Madeleine remains at the heart of everything we do and I will continue to update the McCann family as more information is received by the incident room."

During the programme Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, urged people to rack their brains and come forward with information. Her father said he was hopeful and optimistic at the progress of the new investigation: "These cases can get solved. That is what the public need to think about tonight."

Kate McCann said: "It doesn't matter how much heartache we put ourselves through so long as we get the result that we need."

On Crimewatch, viewers were shown two images of a man with dark hair, based on descriptions from two witnesses who were staying in Praia da Luz at the time. Witnesses described the man as white, aged 20-40, with short brown hair, of medium build, medium height and clean-shaven.

Investigators have also released efits of two fair-haired men seen near the McCanns's apartment at the time. One was seen twice by the same witness nearby. He was 30-35, thin, with short hair, shaving spots on his face and was wearing a black leather jacket. Another witness saw a similar-looking man in the resort.

Police are also investigating a spate of break-ins in the area, one of which happened in the same week a year before Madeleine went missing involving a man who entered a flat where young children were sleeping.

Redwood said: "[H]e appears to have come through the patio door, had a look around inside and definitely had a look into one of the cots and then left without taking anything. Then one of the children raised the alarm.

"We're particularly interested in that event as to whether it has any resonance to the disappearance of Madeleine. The man was described as being a white man with dark hair."

Police are also looking into bogus charity collectors who were operating in the area at the time. On the day that Madeleine disappeared, properties were targeted four times, say detectives.

Police have released two efits of Portuguese men. One, aged 40-45, knocked on the door of the apartment where the McCanns were to stay on 25 or 26 April between 2.30pm and 3pm, saying he was a charity collector. The other, aged 25-30, approached a property on the Rua do Ramalhete, near the Ocean Club, at around 4pm on 3 May.

There is a £20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for Madeleine's disappearance.

The Smith sighting was known by the PJ in May 2007 with or without e-fits. Operation Grange took many months and many thousands of pounds scrutinizing the PJ files looking for that missing piece of the jigsaw - they must have been award of the Smith sighting from the start so why did they wait until 2013 to issue e-fits? Didn't it occur to them beforehand to ask the Smith family to assist with the production of an e-fit or was it necessary to wait until the Murdoch empire blew the whistle? Or were they so preoccupied with Tannerman to bother with any alternative scenario?

Following completion of the review (?) into the case of missing Madeleine McCann, in July 2012 Operation Grange commenced a full blown investigation into MBM's disappearance which, as most are aware was drastically scaled down last year. Subsequently, in the spring/summer of 2013, I recall excited rumblings about the CPS trucking off to Portugal to liaise with officials about strategy and progress in the investigation which led to a consensus of opinion that they must be investigating homicide - why else would the CPS be directly involved.

At the time, it was widely reported that the bigwig that took that trip to Portugal was one Alison Saunders - a very senior CPS official, accompanied by one Jenny Hopkins - Head of Complex Case Unit (?), reported here by the Guardian in June 2013..

Well, apart from the false impression this trip created by the consensus of opinion making unfounded assumptions, what exactly was the result of such an expensive and time consuming escapade? Naff all in the eyes of the public. Blah blah blah ... a number of leads to pursue ... blah blah blah ... persons of interest ... blah blah blah. Indeed, the very same nonsense that was put forward by Operation Grange when announcing the new structure and changes to the investigation, as can be read here..

So, as far as the UK police investigation into MBM's disappearance is concerned, the visit to Portugal by the CPS chiefs was totally non-productive but ... have a delve into this CPS hot-shot in the name of Alison Saunders and see what's she's been up to over the years. One could start with the extraordinary coincidence of the nephew of Dame Margaret Hodge DBE MP, who just happened to be holidaying in PdL the same week as the McCann group. The same Dame who just happened to be the head of Islington Council at the time of the child abuse scandal. The nephew who claims to have submitted images of Madeleine in the background of photographs he took during the week 28th April/4th May 2007 which have never been seen or heard of since?

Can I detect a pattern emerging here - could the visit to Portugal by the CPS have been for a reason other than that consensus of opinion assumed ? A ~~snooping~~ scoping exercise? It would explain a lot..

Well if you do not have success in trying to prise"information" from the Portugal PJ, for special friends who have been bitten once by the UK Police forces co-operation in May 2007 onwards,by using sweethearts,DCI Andy Redwood and DCI Nichola Wall,you send in the Head of the DPP to persuade you that Operation Grange is Kosha?
The same Head of DPP who found that Lord Granville Janner was now too ill to comprehend what he may have done to children he had become acqauinted with and previous DPP Heads had decided not pursue the alleged abuser for the abuse committed on the children?
The same Head of DPP that some how may have chose to tell the Learned Judge, that he(Judge) should take into account how an Eton graduate had followed a comprehensive corrective course of treatment for his predilections for viewing child abuse images and bestiality,not that his Father had connections to top quality law firms, heaven forbid?
