A taxi driver who says he could help solve the mystery of Madeleine McCann’s disappearance has urged Scotland Yard to investigate his claims.
Antonio Castela says he picked up three men, a woman and a girl who looked like the missing three-year-old near the Spanish border in the Algarve the night after she vanished.
He has previously claimed he told Portuguese detectives what he saw, but was not questioned, even though a lawyer for Maddy’s parents said he could provide vital clues.
The case was closed five years ago but Home Secretary Theresa May has sent an official request to Lisbon for permission for the Met to station officers in Portugal to begin a fresh investigation there. It is expected they could fly out within weeks.
Mr Castela, 73, said: “I want to tell them what I saw and assist in the investigation. I remember all the details. I would be very happy if the police re-open the investigation and if I could help in this case. This case has haunted me for a long time.” Maddy, from Leicestershire, vanished from the holiday flat rented by her doctor parents Kate and Gerry in Praia da Luz on the Algarve in May 2007. Mr Castela said he picked up the men, woman and child at 7.50pm, an hour’s drive away.
He took them two miles to the Hotel Apolo in his neighbourhood, Vila Real de Santo António, near Faro, where they got into a blue BMW and drove away. He said: “In 2007 I called police and told them what I had seen. Since then, no one from the police has spoken to me or showed interest in my story. No one came to collect my statement.”
He said he recalls Madeleine, in pink pyjamas, sitting on one of the men’s laps, and he noticed the “black spot” — a distinctive mark in her right eye. “I think my story may give a clue that has not been followed. I do not know what happened to Maddy, but I know that day, she was still alive in my cab.”
The Met has identified 38 potential suspects, including 12 Britons “of interest” who were in Portugal when Maddy vanished.

He must have really stared into her eyes to have noticed that `hardly noticeable fleck`.

So these sophisticated 'abductors' left their charge dressed in her recognisable pyjamas for 24 hours?Woofer wrote:I think he says its the night after she vanished, so the evening of the 4th.Praiaaa wrote:7.50. An hour's drive away. Hasn't he read the 'timeline'?

And the bottoms were more white than pink.
Strangely he dosen't mention the big eeyore image on top part of the pyjamas.
He must have thought it was a giant tea stain!
ETA: So she's not in a hellish lair in the lawless hinterlands within 10km radius of PDL then?
Anything to say on THAT, Mr Grabbit? er, um i mean Mr Edgar.

This is from an article 28 Feb 2008
A taxi driver has claimed he gave missing Madeleine McCann a lift in his cab, along with suspect Robert Murat.
Antonio Cardoso, 67, has come forward nine months into the search to claim he drove the pair on the night Madeleine vanished.
And he insisted he was “sure” it was Murat alongside her, when he accepted the pair into his cab
He said he collected Madeleine, three men and a woman in Monte Gordo, near Portugal’s border with Spain, on the evening of May 3 last year.
He described the girl as wearing pink pyjamas and having the same distinctive eye-mark as Madeleine.
British expat Murat, 33, was named by Portuguese police as the first official “arguido”, or suspect, in the case – later joined in this status by Madeleine’s parents Kate and Gerry McCann.
Mr Cardoso said he later recognised his front-seat passenger as Murat, who has always denied any wrongdoing.
The taxi driver said: “I later recognised him on the television. I am sure it was him.”
But the McCanns’ spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: “We are dismissing this, primarily because the timings are entirely wrong.”
Mr Cardoso says he picked up the group including Madeleine at about 8.10pm – though the McCanns have insisted she was still with them at this time.
The Praia da Luz resort where the McCanns were staying on holiday is about an hour’s drive from Monte Gordo

Oh gawd, ANOTHER one that didn't read the CRIB sheet correctly!
"Cardoso said he later recognised his front-seat passenger as Murat, who has always denied any wrongdoing.
The taxi driver said: “I later recognised him on the television. I am sure it was him.”
And he might well be getting big fat slander/libel lawsuits coming his way from Mr Murat!

Ah, but you are forgetting that there is a quantum theory in McCannWorld about 'McMinutes' running alongside 'McMetres'.
A McMinute can be anywhere from a McSecond to a McHour or hours or even, possibly, (theoretical) stretching to McYEARS.
It depends on when a 'useful' witness can remember anything to corroborate their 'story'.
Eg; so if a taxi driver, for instance, remembers an event BEFORE it happened, that event can be transposed* to a later time by the use of McMinutes.
*transposed, past participle,
1.Cause (two or more things) to change places with each other.
2.Transfer to a different place or context.
Any other examples of the use of 'McMinutes' would be welcomed.

Thank you JM for creating the image in my mind of Kate as the Fallen Madonna of Rothley!
There are some very obviously posed photos of her (usually clutching Cuddle-Cat), where she looks like a cross between the Virgin Mary and Princess Diana.
The actual reality of a foul-mouthed hate-filled fishwife towards those who aren't taken in by her is a little different!

“I transported that girl”
The driver remembers that he transported them in the night of the disappearance, in the 3rd of May, from the square of taxis of Monte Gordo for the Hotel Apolo, in em Vila Real de Santo Antonio. The passengers went then to a jeep. António contacted the PJ, but, as he says, no one took notice of his story.

I don't understand why the newspapers are allowed to print old news, surely members of the public must read and think "I've read that story before, so what's new." If this is the only way they can sell their newspapers then there in a sorry state. There are more important issue's in this country they could print to keep people informed.

Hi Cherry Blossom, I remember reading about this story , the Taxi driver stated that he picked up Madeleine 'on the night' she disappeared, possibly with the help of Mitchell this story has been spun to have now happened on the 4th May, the driver claimed he contacted the PJ two days after the car ride, once again this was changed to discredit him by saying it took ten months for him to come forward, this is not true.Cherry Blossom wrote:I don't understand why the newspapers are allowed to print old news, surely members of the public must read and think "I've read that story before, so what's new." The driver said the female 'looked like Kate' not that is was definitely her, he also said that M looked like she was doped, I only have to look at the make up photo to know that this could be true.
For TM to go the trouble of rearranging this mans story leads me to believe it must be true. RM was there too.
I have read Kate's reaction to this, she said that Madeleine's chin didn't twitch, I find that incredulous, If a child has been snatched by strangers and in fearful state the chin twitching is a child who is almost too afraid to cry, we have all seen children who are about to cry by their chin twitching.
I believe that this mans story is true, and perhaps so do certain sections of the press.
