This is a list of what we know so far about some of the permanent, temporary and occasional residents of Praia da Luz, especially what might be termed the ‘ex-pat’ community. It is in alphabetical order of surname. Members can add to it and it will be updated from time to time. Important figures of interest who live nearby can also be added.

Claimed to be a ‘frequent visitor’ to Praia da Luz, said Madeleine had that ‘special quality’, stayed with the McCanns for a few days in August 2007, later released a short video which featured the highly controversial ‘Make-Up Photo’

Lived in Praia da Luz for decades, the first official suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine. Credible claims made about his sexual interests and having child sexual abuse images on his computer; could not explain why he had encrypted material on his computer, lied to police about what he was really doing between 1 and 4 May when he was suddenly called back from England
MALINKA, Sergei
Associate of Robert Murat, said to have wiped his computer before the police got to it, now a property developer in the area, had his car torched three times, once with the word ‘FALA’ (‘Talk’) daubed on the pavement next to it
PACHECO, Father
Roman Catholic priest who spoke to the McCanns and said he would ‘take the McCanns’ secrets to my grave. Disappeared for two weeks or more when the papers were full of news about the disappearance of Madeline; he was said to be ‘in turmoil’ because of his involvement in the Madeleine Mcann case
SMETHURST, Edward
Has been holidaying in Praia da Luz with one of other of his three families since 1999, Director of the Find Madeleine Fund since 2009
SMITH, Martin and family
Shares an apartment in the Estrela da Luz complex with another family, stays there at least three times a year, says he and his family saw a man carrying a child dressed only in pyjamas at 10pm on 3 May

Dr Martin Roberts: "The evidence is that these are the pjyamas Madeleine wore on holiday in Praia da Luz. They were photographed and the photo handed to a press agency, who released it on 8 May, as the search for Madeleine continued. The McCanns held up these same pyjamas at two press conferences on 5 & 7June 2007. How could Madeleine have been abducted?"

Proprietor of a villa and vineyard situated close to Praia da Luz on the Portuguese Algarve but resides mostly at his home in Barbados where he entertains notorious politicians, Tony Blair to name but one. More recently suspected of abuse crimes against minors but somehow managed to escape the net and thus avoid prosecution.
No direct connection known with the fate of missing Madeleine McCann - yet!
