Shocking new evidence: Madeleine McCann's suspected killer revealed | 60 Minutes Australia
14 October 2020
42:52 minutes
The disappearance of three-year-old Madeleine McCann is a heart-breaking mystery. Ever since she went missing on a family holiday in Portugal in May 2007, her beautiful face has haunted the world. In that time her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann have never stopped searching for answers about what happened to their daughter. They’ve also never stopped hoping she might still be alive.
After 13 years of torment and frustration, there’s finally been a significant breakthrough in the case. It’s brought the best – and tragically, the worst – news for Maddie’s family. Three months ago, German prosecutors announced they had a prime suspect, 43-year-old convicted sex-offender Christian Brueckner. But authorities also confirmed the suspicion no one wanted to hear: Madeleine was most likely dead.

EXCLUSIVE: The 14th anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance is approaching but German investigators say they remain optimistic, nearly a year after Christian Brueckner was identified

Madeleine McCann vanished 14 years ago from a holiday apartment in Portugal/
Prosecutors have insisted they “remain optimistic” they will crack the Madeleine McCann mystery – as the 14th anniversary of her disappearance approaches.
Hans Christian Wolters said a German investigation into suspect Christian Brueckner, 44, is running “at full speed”.
And he hoped a new TV documentary will help uncover more clues.
He told the Sunday Mirror: “Even if the public does not notice it much, our investigations in the Maddie case continue to run at full speed.
“We still assume the accused, Christian B, killed Madeleine. Even though the investigation of a case that will be 14 years old in a few days is very difficult after all this time, we remain optimistic and hopeful that we will be able to solve the crime.
“In doing so, we continue to work closely with the Metropolitan Police and the Portuguese law enforcement authorities, regardless of Brexit.”
Christian Brueckner was named as a suspect in the McCann case last year.
Mr Wolters said in June last year that he believed Madeleine is dead and identified convicted paedophile Brueckner as a suspect.
Brueckner is serving seven years for the rape of a 72-year-old woman in Praia da Luz, where Madeleine vanished from an apartment on May 3, 2007 – days before her fourth birthday.
She was in Portugal with her parents Gerry and Kate and her twin siblings, then aged two.
A Danish-made documentary on Brueckner will screen in the suspect’s native Germany on April 28.
Mr Wolters added: “I did a long interview. Of course, we always hope for new leads. In this respect, the programme may well help to clear up the case.”
Hans Christian Wolters says the investigation is ongoing even if the public don't see it.
A lawyer for Brueckner has repeatedly called for police to show their evidence – and vowed his client will never face trial over Madeleine.
Parents Kate and Gerry, of Rothley, Leics, have said: “We will never give up hope of finding Madeleine alive.”

So Wolters has gone from having 'concrete proof' just a few months ago to now just 'assuming', 'remaining optimistic' and 'hoping'.
Just aswell their investigation is still running at full speed. I'd hate to see them dragging their heels.

Re: Christian Brueckner: To be or not to be
I wonder what word he used which has translated as "Assumed"
There are many which might fit the bill
annehmen, übernehmen, voraussetzen, vermuten, vorgeben, unterstellen, each of which has a different emphasis and force.
even Google translate gives "accept, assume, presuppose, presume, pretend, assume," and a native or highly fluent German speaker would be able to elaborate.
Vermuten, for example can carry the meaning of "to suspect, to conjecture" [cf. English 'moot']
We use assume in a hypothetical way, as in
"Let us assume, for the sake of argument, that Madeleine was abducted. What then might we expect to find at the scene?

Re: Christian Brueckner: To be or not to be
Has Herr Wolters managed to work out the location of the phone masts in Praia du Luz yet , he was certainly struggling when interviewed by Mark Saunokonoko ? Or is that something else he's just " assuming " ?
Has he spoken to the witnesses who allegedly saw a man carrying a child on the night of the " abduction " ? Jane Tanner whose description has changed so many times I'm sure would oblige in identifying C.B as the man she saw that night , after all she's done it before !
What about Martin Smith ? Does he think C.B looks like the man they saw , who they wouldn't recognise again but wasn't Murat , but might be Gerry McCann ?
Has Wolters spoken with Martin Grime about the alerts given by Eddie and Keela , or did he go to the same school as Professor McCann and decided they're " incredible unreliable " ?
Three weeks to go to the next anniversary ! Prepare for a McCann news takeover , the circus continues !

Of course there is always room in mainstream media to push 'the virus' aside and make way for more pressing issues - like the sad death of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.
The heat on that front will fade over the next few weeks I feel, 'the virus' is now under control so can be put on the back burner until the next inevitable pre-planned surge - just in time for Mayday!
Blank tabloid papers waiting for the next big storyline.

Change the record Mr Daily!
At the end of 2020 and beginning of 2021 and most probably before and after, Herr Wolter was reported to have said the German investigation could not proceed until the spring of 2021 your guess is as good as mine!
Whatever, it fits in nicely with the forthcoming 14th anniversary celebrations - just enough to keep the case open (?) for the ensuing decade.

German prosecutors are confident they can indict Madeleine McCann’s main suspect, Christian Brueckner, for her disappearance.
The convicted pedophile, 43, is serving a 21-month sentence for an unrelated drug case in a Kiel prison and will be transferred to Wolfenbuttel in January to begin a seven-year sentence for the rape of an OAP woman in Praia da Luz in 2005.
He was identified as the new prime suspect in June after German police released a host of new evidence, including details of his cars and phone numbers, urging people to provide new information.
German prosecutors now say they believe they have “hard evidence” that Madeleine is dead and should indict Brueckner with three more sex crimes in Praia da Luz in Portugal, where the three-year-old girl went missing in 2007.
Hans Christian Wolters, who heads the German investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance, said he was “confident” in the investigation.
A source close to the investigation told The Sun: ‘Things are progressing in the case and there have been several promising leads and tips, in particular from UK holidaymakers who were in Praia da Luz at the time of the disappearance of Madeleine.’

How Wolters seriously thinks he and the BKA have even a chance of getting through the preliminary hearing before a main court case I have no idea!
I wonder how many Sun readers will be witnesses in the case?
But IF they are really set on trying Brückner in a real court, or even a ‘Kangaroo court’ for that matter, they will either have to ‘set him up’ so well that no-one can appeal it.
Or make him ‘the most perfect suspect’ beforehand.

The Daily Mail, and the Sun seem to be always the British press leaders on the subject, always quoting ‘a source close to the investigation’ as the reason how they know so much.
Post #630 includes a link to the Bild, the equivalent of the U.K. Sun.
The German press has not printed much on this story since Brückner was moved to another Prison in December last year.
Herr Wolters I suspect, still feels confident because he has failed to inform himself on the previous history of the case.
Or is he being supported by his ‘Ferryman’?
I wish I knew.

If you look back over this thread, you will see the German press (tabloid equivalents) have been running parallel stories since this particular saga began, back in June 2020.
When translating from one language to another, it's impossible to form a duplicate report without inaccuracies - lost in translation as they say. Worse still when using straight forward google translate - by that I mean word for word translation without due consideration for grammatical differences.
Suffice to say, the German media have been reporting similar stories over the months, give or take a bit of word juggling to suit press sensationalism.
Frankly it's beyond boring. which is probably the reason you might have missed something. The above Mail report is from December 2020, four months ago. There have been a number of reports since that time, all basically repetition - hence I say it's boring.
More recent documentaries, such as the Discovery+ channel (covered on this thread), are perhaps a better indication of what's been pouring forth from the mouth of the German prosecutor and Brueckner's current lawyer. Even that's sub-titled and heavily edited so can't be an accurate account of exactly what has been said.
It's my belief that the media reports regurgitated again and again over the past ten months, emanate from German source - be that a German person or English person is a matter of conjecture.
The Sun tabloid is repeatedly named by other press outlets as the source of information - the Sun, in my view, has an informer. The most interesting factor being the focus on Germany since this whole sorry saga began back in the summer of 2007. The McCanns European/North African lightening tour, highlighted the abduction by paedophile scenario - the first port of call being Berlin!
This is more than coincidence. The German focus and it's named suspects with German connections, share so many similarities and have been craftily used as a basis for fringe documentaries covering the Complete Mystery of Madeleine McCann.
I'll wager the McCanns wealthy benefactor, Brian Kennedy and Clarence Mitchell and possibly Julian Peribañez, who once worked for the infamous Spanish detective agency, Metodo3, along with their contacts in the media world, are behind all this nonsense.

Just in time for the run-up to the Anniversary, the Discovery plus Danish production is soon to be available in Germany.
Monday, April 26th, 2021, 7:46 am
What is going on in the case of Maddie McCann and the main German suspect Christian B.? A new true crime documentary traces the life of Christian B - and presents numerous witnesses, companions, investigators and an ex-girlfriend in an interview.
After the spectacular revelations in the Madeleine McCann case in June 2020, it has become a little quiet. At that time, the public prosecutor's office in Braunschweig announced that it was investigating a 43-year-old German who was already in custody for other offenses on suspicion of murder - it was reported in "Aktenzeichen XY ... unsolved" (ZDF): the Christian case B.
No charges have been brought since then. Apparently the public prosecutor's office is still looking for evidence - and probably also for a dead body, despite many indications that point to B. as the perpetrator. But who is that Christian B., with whom the German prosecutors are apparently sure that he is the perpetrator?
Journalist Jesper Grand and the Danish production company Heartland TV produced a three-part true crime documentary for the Discovery + channel, which was shown for the first time in the original English languageon February 15, 2021.
Now, on Wednesday, April 28th, 8:15 p.m., TLC will show the German version in one go. What can you find out about Christian B. and the status of the investigation?

EXCLUSIVE: Paedophile Christian Brueckner, 43, is suspected of taking the then three-year-old while he was living on Portugal’s Algarve. He is being held in Kiel prison in northern Germany
The prime suspect in Madeleine McCann’s disappearance is only in the frame because German police think they are smarter than Brits, according to his lawyer.
The claim by the man acting for Christian Brueckner, 43, comes ahead of Monday's 14th anniversary of the youngster’s disappearance on holiday.
Paedophile Brueckner, a German, is suspected of taking the then three-year-old while he was living on Portugal’s Algarve.
His lawyer Friedrich Fuelscher, speaking on German TV, said: “Different authorities have investigated – the Portuguese police and British.
“My client has not been charged in these proceedings, he is considered as ‘accused’. Based on this, I don’t assume that there is any solid evidence against him.
“Maybe that’s a bit typical for us Germans, that at least in Europe we somehow think we’re something special and we can do things better than others.
“We’ll see if that’s the case here, but I personally don’t believe it.”
Brueckner is being held in Kiel prison in northern Germany after he was convicted of unrelated offences.
German prosector Christian Wolters said: “Murder never becomes time-barred in Germany. So we can hold Christian B. criminally responsible for as long as he lives.”
Madeleine vanished from a holiday flat in Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007.

Madeleine McCann suspect to be charged with Algarve rape
Drifter suspected of attack on Irish tour rep near where three-year-old vanished
The prime suspect for the abduction of Madeleine McCann is due to be charged with the rape of an Irish tour representative in 2004.
Christian Brückner is suspected of attacking Hazel Behan, then 20, in her apartment in Praia da Rocha on the Algarve, a 30-minute drive from where Madeleine was abducted.
German federal police, who are leading the inquiry into Brückner, hope to charge him with raping Behan “in the next three months”.
Behan, 37, who has waived her right to anonymity, contacted British police after reading in the news about a similar sex attack by Brückner.
His history emerged during an appeal for information by German detectives investigating the disappearance of Madeleine. German prosecutors claimed last year to have evidence that Brückner abducted

Police Exclude Christian Brueckner As Suspect In Rape Of Irish Holiday Representative
10th June 2020
A German prosecutor said today that Madeleine McCann was killed shortly after her abduction.
Hans Christian Wolters, who is investigating Christian Brueckner, told The Times that police discovered the suspect spoke about the abduction, rape and murder of a girl during a conversation with another pedophile in line.
At one point, he wrote about his frightening desire to “take something small and use it for days,” and when asked to get caught, he added, “Meh, if the evidence is destroyed… “
“My personal opinion is that he killed the girl relatively quickly, maybe abused her, and then killed her,” said Mr. Wolters.
“We believe our suspect has committed other crimes, including sexual crimes, in Portugal perhaps, but also elsewhere like in Germany. “
Wolters added that he wanted to gather as much evidence as possible before confronting Brüeckner, so that he would have a lesser chance of being able to weaken the prosecution against him.
Brueckner is currently under investigation into the disappearance of five children – including three-year-old Madeleine, who went missing in the Algarve in 2007.
Hans Christian Wolters, who investigates Christian Brueckner, told The Times police discovered that the suspect had discussed the abduction, rape and murder of a girl during a conversation with another pedophile online.
Portuguese prosecutors expose Christian Brueckner’s criminal conviction.
The prosecution has confirmed that Madeleine McCann suspects Christian Brueckner of having two convictions in Portugal.
It was reported last week that the 43-year-old man had served two prison terms in the country – one of two months at Evora prison in 1999 for a minor offense and a nine-month prison sentence in the Algarve in 2006 for theft of gasoline which he had completed shortly before Maddie’s disappearance.
There had been no official confirmation of articles in the Portuguese press regarding Brueckner’s criminal record.
But Portuguese prosecutors have now made the unusual decision to publicly confirm his criminal record.
A Faro district spokesperson for the Portuguese prosecution said in a statement released late yesterday evening / Tuesday evening: “Over the past few days, several press articles have been published linking the German national suspected of being involved in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in other court cases which took place in the district of Faro.
“In order to clarify the matter, the prosecution has examined its files and has so far managed to collect the following information.
“The suspect Maddie was convicted of disobedience in one case and theft in another.
“Five requests for international judicial cooperation have also been found in which the name of the suspect is mentioned.
“One of the requests relates to a case against strangers closed in February 2006, and four related to the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann. “
The statement added as background and an explanation of the current state of the investigation by Madeleine McCann: “The investigation is being carried out by the prosecution of the Portimao section of DIAP in Faro with the help of the Policia Judiciaria .
“The investigation was carried out in close cooperation with the German and English judicial authorities.
“After the reopening of the process, no arguidos or official suspects were formed and the investigations continued with the completion of investigative work which was intended to identify and punish the person (s) responsible.”
There was no immediate confirmation as to whether the request for international cooperation unrelated to Madeleine McCann concerned the rape, in November 2005, of an American PAO in Praia da Luz, of which Brueckner had been convicted at the late last year in Germany.
Yesterday, it was revealed how Brueckner had been linked to the murder of a German schoolgirl who disappeared almost 20 years ago.
Peggy Knobloch was nine years old when she disappeared on her way home from school in 2001.
Part of his skeleton was discovered 15 years later by a mushroom picker in a Bavarian forest, about 60 miles from his home in Lichtenberg, Upper Franconia.
The city is about 100 miles from the hometown of Brueckner, Würzburg.
Investigators have revealed that the historic cold case is being reopened in relation to the suspect of 43-year-old Madeleine McCann, who is a convicted pedophile.
Attorney General Martin Dippold told the German newspaper Bild that, although there is currently no evidence linking the suspect to the disappearance of Peggy, “he is currently being re-examined in the case”.
Detectives are also re-examining the cases of René Hasee, six, missing while on vacation in Aljezur – 40 km from Praia da Luz, where Brueckner lived at the time.
The German is also a suspect in the disappearances of Carola Titze, 16, who disappeared in Belgium in 1996 and Inga Gehricke, 5, who disappeared in Germany in 2015.
The Mail also revealed that it was linked to the 2010 assassination of Monika Pawlak, a 24-year-old prostitute, in Hanover.
The 43-year-old man was sentenced in 2019 to seven years in prison by a German court after DNA evidence linked him to the assault.
One day before the three-year-old boy disappeared, the German drug dealer told one of the women that he had “a job to do in Praia da Luz tomorrow”.
“It’s horrible work but it’s something I have to do and it will change my life. You won’t see me for a while, “according to The Sun.
Three years later, her other British ex joked that Brueckner looked like some of the photofits in the search for Maddie’s kidnapper and asked him if he had taken her.
A friend of the two women, who were each interviewed by the police but not suspected of being involved in the disappearance of Maddie, said: “He answered the question and shrugged – then added:” Do not go “.
The anonymous friend, originally from North Yorkshire but now living in Lagos, Portugal, said that people rejected the offhand comments, adding that his two exes were beaten by Brueckner when they went out with him.
He claims to have met Brueckner while working at The Tavern’s expatriate bar in the Portuguese city.
He added, “What he said at this dinner suggests that he could have planned it very carefully and that he could even have stolen Madeleine on command. “
She is not suspected in the case, but reports indicate that she has agreed to cooperate with the police and has spoken twice to detectives investigating her former partner.
Mother of two, still living in Portugal, was questioned by police last year as part of the Brueckner investigation and, according to The Mirror, spoke to them again in the last few days after the man 43-year-old was identified as one of the main suspects in the Madeleine case.
Police revealed on Monday that they wanted to talk to a third Brueckner ex, Nakscije Miftari
Brueckner is currently serving a prison sentence in Germany for the rape of a 72-year-old woman in Portugal.
But he would have been eligible for parole this weekend, and a friend has since revealed to the Sun that the unnamed woman is terrified of pursuing her.
The friend said, “She is really nervous, she knows that B is in prison but fears that he will be released one day and will pursue her.
“It is true that they were together.
Meanwhile, the Mirror reports that the woman’s former British husband, a businessman who also lives in Portugal, was also interviewed by Interpol last year about Brueckner.
He told The Mirror, “We decided not to speak. The police were in touch and we talked to them. We don’t want to be involved in this.
Police said on Monday that they wanted to talk to a third Brueckner ex, Nakscije Miftari.
Nakscije met Brueckner at the age of 17, after settling in a dilapidated district of Braunschweig, a ruined industrial town in northern Germany, and ran a kiosk selling beer, soft drinks , snacks and candy.
He then took Nakscije, who is German of Albanian descent, to Portugal in 2014, but she was returned to Germany less than a year later on allegations of crime.
Detectives in Britain and Germany want to ask her what she knows about Brueckner’s past, especially his stay in Portugal.

The newspaper did not provide further information on the work that had been done to reconsider Brueckner’s possible involvement in the 2004 rape, which had taken place the year before the rape of a 72-year-old American woman in Praia. da Luz, of which the German had been found guilty. end of last year in his country of origin. The Portuguese police made no official comments. The latest development comes when Portuguese police have already excluded Brueckner as a suspect in the rape of Irishwoman Hazel Behan.
Mother of two renounced her right to remain anonymous to reveal that she was violently sexually assaulted by a masked man in her Algarve apartment in 2004 and said she thought he might have been the 43-year-old convicted rapist.
Behan told the Guardian yesterday that Met police were taking her case seriously and said she would contact her Portuguese counterparts after her statement.
But respected Portuguese daily Jornal de Noticas reported today that Madeleine McCann suspected Brueckner of being excluded from the unsolved sex crime that occurred in Praia da Rocha, a half-hour drive east of Praia da Luz, where the British girl disappeared.
The newspaper said: “Jornal de Noticias learned that the idea that it was Brueckner was taken into account when he became a suspect in the Maddie case. Unresolved crimes, like Hazel’s, have been reviewed and investigators have concluded that he was not the perpetrator [responsible]. ‘
The victim in this case was tortured and raped by Brueckner, who filmed the savage attack.Behan says a stranger entered her apartment in Praia da Rocha, Portugal, installed a video camera, tied her with cords and raped her in 2004 when she was 20 years old.
The mother of two, now married, worked as a vacation representative at the time and lived in the seaside resort, about 32 km from Praia da Luz – where Madeleine was abducted in 2007.
Behan, who now lives in Ireland, believes the attack bears the mark of Christian Brueckner’s rape of a 72-year-old woman in Praia da Luz in September 2005, reports the Guardian.
The 43-year-old man was sentenced in 2019 to seven years in prison by a German court after DNA evidence linked him to the assault.
A friend of Christian Brueckner’s two ex-British girlfriends revealed that he disappeared from the radar after Maddie’s disappearance in May 2007.But Ms. Behan’s assailant was never caught.
She claims that the Portuguese police did not attempt to examine her injuries for evidence, and said that they “are not sure” that the police examined her room closely.
But following the news that Brueckner had been made a suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine and media reports of her brutal attack on a woman in Praia da Luz, she has since made a statement to the metropolitan police.
Behan also brandished her right to remain anonymous while revealing details of the attack on her in an interview with The Guardian.
She told the newspaper, “My mind was blown away when I read how he attacked a woman in 2005, both the tactics and the methods he used, the tools he had with him, how well he planned it. “
“I had little hope in the past 16 years that they would find the man who did this. I was told at the time that I should just be quiet.
“Then I read about the poor American girl who was raped – whom I would love to talk to – and the possible connection that was made between her attack and the person who kidnapped Madeleine McCann, and I was so full of anger, I knew in my gut, it was the right thing to do to speak.
Behan said the attack took place just weeks before her 21st birthday.
One day before the three-year-old boy disappeared, the German drug dealer told one of the women that he had “a job to do in Praia da Luz tomorrow”.
“It’s horrible work but it’s something I have to do and it will change my life. You won’t see me for a while, “according to The Sun.

He added, “What he said at this dinner suggests that he could have planned it very carefully and that he could even have stolen Madeleine on command. “

Ms. Behan worked as a holiday representative and lived in the resort of Praia da Rocha, which is about 32 km from Praia da Luz – where Madeleine was abducted in 2007.

Why anyone bothers with all this carp is totally beyond me.
It's fast approaching one year since Germanman hit the headlines and yet, here we are still going over the same old cobblers.
Lest they forget .... there is no evidence to suggest Madeleine McCann was abducted therefore Brueckner, his past and present, is totally irrelevant. Pathetic.
Move on.

There is no time limit on Murder in Germany. ‘Mord verjährt nie’.
There is also no time limit on the Investigation phase of this process.
All of benefit to anyone ‘close to the investigation’.
Brueckner is being held in Prison on other charges, so they can take their time for the next seven years.
In which time the Fifteen year limit in Portugal and the ECHR Case pending will be long over with.
§ 211: Murder (under aggravating circumstances)[edit]
Main article: Murder (German law)In German: Mord. The intentional, successful killing of another person, with at least one of the aggravating circumstances mentioned in § 211 sec.2 fulfilled. Those circumstances concern base motives, criminal aims or cruel ways of committing the crime. An intentional killing that does not qualify for Mord is called Totschlag (§ 212). § 211 is the only crime within the Strafgesetzbuch that carries a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment(a sentence of life without parole is not expressly provided for in German law, but it is possible certain convicts of murder can spend the rest of their lives in prison).
