Jury service
In Ireland (maybe its not the same as in the Uk) you can legally evade jury service if you are a medical professional (not just a doctor but nurse, physio etc) or you get your boss to sign a letter to say you are too important to be spared. I wanted to do jury service but my then boss insisted I could not be spared, he was a difficult man so I did not argue and let him write a letter saying he needed me in the office. I think I read somewhere that the current system in Ireland has to change as it is resulting in juries of the early retired, fulltime housewives whose children are not that young etc - not a jury of your peers as was the intention of juries.

Rebekah "feels vindicated".. it's in all the papers.
I'm still amazed that Paul McMullan was not called as a witness in this trail.
He has publicly stated on live TV that he has signed documents by his boss authorising him to hack phones and THAT is why he is personally not in prison.
Sounds like a (the) key witness to me.
Especially as Brooks was his boss for a few years and that McMullan told the Leveson enquiry that Brooks knew all about the phone hacking.
What was the prosecution playing at?

"Rebekah Brooks told News of the World journalists there were worse revelations to come in the hacking scandal during a heated meeting which saw them vent their fury at her ‘betrayal’.
The embattled chief executive said that in a year’s time staff would all understand why the company had decided to close the newspaper."
I remember RB saying the above quote and thought at the time that there was more to come. But it appears not the case.
Only AC apparently.

I think it is one of those things that everyone should experience given the opportunity. I was a juror in a knife crime case, and felt proud that justice was done and that I had a say in it.

I was proud to do it Enid, and I saw first hand that there is no opportunity to noble a jury! I am not sure how juries are selected, but I spent many hours in a room with hundreds of other people, waiting to be called.Enid O'Dowd wrote:In Ireland (maybe its not the same as in the Uk) you can legally evade jury service if you are a medical professional (not just a doctor but nurse, physio etc) or you get your boss to sign a letter to say you are too important to be spared. It was such an interesting experience, spookily like Twelve Angry Men. Of course, not all men these days, we were a very diverse group and our approach to the evidence presented was very much influenced by our personal beliefs. But that is how society is made up, there will be representatives of the hang 'em and flog 'em as well as tree hugging freedom fighters. I suppose that is why in the USA, the lawyers go through a jury selection process rejecting anyone that may be swayed by race, colour, political creed etc. [I only know this through films btw, so happy to be corrected].
The UK afaik, do not have such a system, but I felt we were a good representation of 'the people', various ages, backgrounds, professions and colour. We all took it very seriously and wanted to do the best job we could do, fully aware that our decision would dramatically change a young person's life. I would urge anyone to do it if given the opportunity, imo, it really is a once in a lifetime experience.

How can justice have been done when the prosecution didn't call THE key witness with physical hard copy evidence?
It wasn't justice it was a travesty.
The people at the top stink.

Andy Coulson to face perjury charges over the Tommy Sheridan trial
Former News of the World editor Andy Coulson is to appear in court on 6 August to face perjury charges over the Tommy Sheridan trial.
Mr Coulson has been indicted to appear at the High Court in Glasgow.
The formal announcement follows his conviction in England last week on phone hacking charges.
Mr Coulson, 46, was charged two years ago after being questioned in Glasgow in connection with his evidence at the Tommy Sheridan trial in 2010.
It is understood officials at the Crown Office in Edinburgh were awaiting the outcome of his trial in England before announcing any action against him.
The Prime Minister's former director of communications was jailed for 18 months last week.
Mr Coulson was convicted at the Old Bailey in London of conspiring to intercept voicemails at the now-defunct tabloid after an eight-month trial.
Yesterday, a spokesman at the Crown Office said: "The Crown Office can confirm that an indictment was served on Andrew Coulson today, 7 July 2014 and that a preliminary hearing is scheduled for 6 August 2014 at the High Court at Glasgow."

Oh what a surprise!
Missing: 3 million News International emails
All emails covering her period as editor removed after Rebekah Brooks changed company’s email deletion policy in 2010
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], Thursday 6 November 2014 20.09 GMT
Three million emails at News International are missing after Rebekah Brooks changed the company’s email deletion policy, a jury heard.
Brooks ordered the change in June 2010, which resulted in a large quantity of emails being deleted, including those “covering her entire period as editor of the Sun”, Kingston crown court was told.
The issue of missing emails emerged as the prosecution completed its case in the trial of six Sun and former Sun journalists accused of making corrupt payments to public officials. All six deny the charges.
Oliver Glasgow, prosecuting, read out details of the email deletion as an “agreed fact” between parties at the trial. He told the jury it had resulted in a significant loss of emails. “Three million are missing,” he said. Some had been recovered from backups made by independent contractors “including evidence in this trial”.
Earlier, the jury was told that one journalist had used the phrase “senior police source” to dress up stories and aggrandise himself in the eyes of his bosses and readers. Jamie Pyatt, 51, told police he had never paid police officers and that the phrase “senior police source” was just a euphemism.

Police and prosecutors did not have all the facts.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Which rather changes the situation.
Might let the prosecution mount an appeal, though I rather doubt it would be in the interests of the public purse to do so.
Or a new prosecution for "pervert the course", or depending what she was asked, and what her replies were - for perjury ?
I could not possibly comment, obviously.
Rebekah Brooks in new email mystery: Police were not given email showing former editor of The Sun signed off all payments, court told
The police chief in charge of one of Scotland Yard’s largest investigations, into alleged corrupt payments to public officials by Sun journalists, has claimed not to have seen an internal email stating all cash payments had to be approved by Rebekah Brooks.
Detective Superintendent Mark Kandiah was asked at Kingston Crown Court yesterday about an email dated April 2006 sent to senior executives by the newspaper’s managing editor, Graham Dudman, which stated: “With immediate effect, no cash payments to be made without Rebekah’s approval.”
The jury at the trial of six Sun journalists accused of paying public officials for confidential information was told by lawyers for Mr Dudman that the email had “literally surfaced in the last week”. Oliver Blunt QC asked: “I imagine you haven’t seen it?” Mr Kandiah, recently retired from the Met, replied: “No.”

What possible use would deleting 3 million emails have for the person ordering their deletion?
Why would anyone give out such an order?
Is that not rather unusual?

Blimey - reading that whole Independent article, it seems that the whole of Operation Elveden was managed, not by the MET, but by Murdoch`s company MSC !
Murdoch has a lot to answer for, but is probably too powerful to ever be prosecuted.
