ESSEX Police has reopened the investigation into the death of Lee Balkwell, according to the Metropolitan Police Service.
The Met has told the YA that Essex Police has requested its assistance with the investigation.
Mr Balkwell’s father said the case had been reopened following claims Essex Police had missed vital evidence on Lee’s body.
Essex Police has refused to comment on or answer any questions about the new investigation.
Lee Balkwell, 33, was found dead in a cement mixer at Baldwin Farm, Dennises Lane, Upminster, in July 2002.
Essex Police concluded that Mr Balkwell’s death was ’accidental’ but his father Les has always believed his son was murdered.
In early 2015 – almost 13 years after Lee’s death – the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) gave the first official indication that the authorities now agreed with Les Balkwell.
The Government body ruled that Lee has been ’the blameless victim of a violent crime’ and authorised a pay-out to his family.
Tony Bennett, a solicitor representing Les Balkwell, claimed the fresh investigation had been prompted by new observations from a private investigator, David McKelvey.
Mr McKelvey, from private investigation firm TM-Eye, was re-examining the evidence on behalf of Les Balkwell.
Mr Bennett claimed Mr McKelvey’s conclusions had left Essex Police with ’no alternative but to ask the help of the Met’.
Mr Bennett claimed: “The new investigation, which is likely to be led by the Met, was forced upon them by the new and significant forensic evidence that suggests Lee was murdered.”
The Met has told the YA: “We can confirm the MPS has received a request for assistance from Essex Police in connection with the death of Lee Balkwell.
“At this very early stage the matter is being assessed by detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Review Group.”
Essex Police refused to comment on the new investigation other than to say that it acknowledged the Met’s statement.
It refused to answer any questions posed by the YA, including why it had reopened the case, when it had done so or whether the force now agreed with the CICA’s conclusion that Lee died as a result of a violent crime.
It also refused to answer questions about whether it was working with TM-Eye on the investigation or why it felt the need to involve the Met, rather than conducting the investigation by itself.
A spokesperson for the force said: “In relation to your questions: We are aware of the Met’s statement and have nothing to add at this time.”

The third picture shows a tent over the grave of Lee Balkwell in Upminster cemetery, Essex, at the time his body was exhumed in March 2013 as part of a flawed and corrupt Kent Police review.Doug D wrote:Well done TB.

It was in effect a second post-mortem, conducted by Dr Benjamin Swift, who by the way made a number of mistakes in his reports.

Andrew, from the MMM forum, overlooks Tony's incredible achievements in the Balkwell and Lubbock case to phone him and his wife in the middle of the night to leave death threats on his answerphone, simply because he doesn't agree with Tony's theories.
Andrew calls Tony a "loon", amongst other things - but is a "loon" really capable of such success for the families of murdered children?
If Andrew's child was murdered, God forbid, wouldn't he want someone of Tony's calibre to fight for justice which has taken him ten years so far, in the case of Lee Balkwell, fighting against police corruption to finally get the case reopened?
Tony wants justice for Maddie McCann, just as he wants justice for Stuart and Lee, and Andrew is fighting him tooth and nail on the MMM forum, with the protection of the admin and moderator, and has now taken his vendetta/obsession on to twitter in order to discredit him.
I know who I support 100% and that person is, and has been for the past 10 years: Mr Tony Bennett the truthseeker.

He is one of the honest, dedicated detectives who, as a DCI in the Met, stumbled, in his detective work, on a major criminal network which was being supported by corrupt senior Met Police officers who were being paid by the top criminals in south-east England.
When he made an arrest of a man deeply involved in this corrupt network, all hell broke loose - he was the subject of a false, trumped-up charge by senior Met Police officers and was subsequently hounded out of the Met.

Without his determined investigation and advocacy, this new breakthrough would not have been achieved.
