I think it's worth keeping in mind. On 3rd May this year, Madeleine McCann went missing. That is one of the very few facts in what has become the news story of 2007. Her parents Kate and Gerry have gone from victims of a terrible tragedy to suspects in the disappearance of their own child.

What has really happened in the 168 days since Madeleine was last seen? Dispatches sent a team of five of the UK's best-qualified criminal investigators to Praia da Luz.

Led by retired Detective Chief Superintendent Chris Stevenson, who headed the Soham investigation into the murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in 2002, their goal is to review the Portuguese police investigation.

The investigators analyse the key moments in the near six-month investigation. With expertise in forensics, searching, profiling and media management, learned in dozens of UK cases, the team detail how they would have responded to Madeleine's disappearance and gone about finding her.

With testimony from observers who witnessed events in the crucial early days, they differentiate between the fact and the wildly speculative media fiction.

Madeleine McCann search Disappearance timeline has changed

14th October 2013

British police investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann have released two e-fit images of one man they want to trace in connection with Madeleine's disappearance. Det Ch Insp Andy Redwood of the Metropolitan Police said he could be the man who took Madeleine, but there could be an innocent explanation. As a result, according to the police, the timeline and "accepted version of events" surrounding Madeleine's disappearance have significantly changed. Det Ch Insp Redwood said he was now attaching more weight to the sighting of the man, who was seen carrying a small child at 10pm. This is later than the time it was previously believed Madeleine was taken.

CMOMM has attracted a lot of new members since the beginning of the year. The McCanns are as stale as last months granary loaf but interest in justice for little Madeleine McCann, lost to the world over thirteen years ago, continues unabated.

He completely gave himself away there. They were staying in a hotel - any number of accidents could have happened in that apartment .There are dozens of reasons why blood can be found anywhere. I think Kate McCann realised he had dropped a clanger, and decided to stay put.

They overplayed their game.

With their arrogance and bravado I don't think it occurred to them for one moment that decent folk might start looking deeper.

Really, their total downfall began with the release of the PJ files into the public arena. They certainly didn't anticipate that! No wonder they were desperate for UK intervention.

The rest as they say is history.
