Hear, boy: dog foils jailbreak plot after hearing prisoners digging tunnel
Tunnel reported to be 30 metres long is discovered after pet picks up sounds during walk on the Greek island of Corfu
The dog was out walking in a park near Corfu prison.
Staff and agencies
Sunday 16 August 2015 02.15 BST
A dog out for a morning walk has unwittingly foiled a prison break after it detected that something was not quite right under its paws.
The pet was out with its owner on the Greek island of Corfu when it picked up the presence of inmates digging a tunnel underneath, the ANA news agency reported on Saturday.
The dog froze, clearly cocking an ear to suspicious sounds below and refusing to budge, until finally its owner decided to call the police.
Police found a tunnel about 30 metres long, starting from Corfu prison’s B wing where 21 convicts serving long or life terms are being held. Inside the tunnel, investigators found battery-powered fans and plastic containers of food, according to local reports.
The same prison could have used the dog’s help in 1996, when several dozen inmates escaped using an old tunnel dug by the English when the island was a British protectorate from 1814 to 1864.

Ciara Breen missing: Specialist sniffer dogs brought to search for teenager 18 years after she vanished

The 17-year-old vanished in 1997 but Irish police have renewed the search after receiving “significant information” following a public appeal earlier this year
Ciara Breen has not been seen since 1997
Specialist sniffer dogs have been brought in to help the search for a teenager who has been missing for 18 years.
Ciara Breen vanished in 1997 aged 17, but Irish police have renewed the search after receiving “significant information” following a public appeal earlier this year.
The highly-trained cadaver dogs have been combing the Balmer’s Bog area of Dundalk, Co Louth, in a bid to find Ciara’s remains.
The team battled through horrendous conditions yesterday as they tried to find anything which could solve the mystery of her disappearance, the Irish Mirror reports.
Sources said they are quietly confident police will make “real progress” in cracking the case. . . .

MYTHBUSTERS
On Mythbusters last night, they tested the powers of a bloodhound.
The final test, Jamie showered for a long time, then wore a full forensic suit with total head cover and respirator,
and was then drenched in acetone,
he then laid a false trail, of his own shower water, before making it into a large circle and dumping the apparatus in the middle, before making off and hiding.
The dog followed the trail, sniffed the circle for five seconds and then carried on and found him.
The dog has been sacked for being "Unreliable" ?
Err, umm, No.
There is no doubt about the dog's findings in PdL.
None at all.

New film about Megan Leavey and her military combat dog
I just heard actress Kate Mara talking on Radio 1 about a film she is about to start filming; the film is about a marine and her bomb-sniffing dog who together saved hundreds of lives in Iraq. Not bad going for 1 of those unreliable dogs!
http://variety.com/2015/film/global/house-of-cards-star-kate-mara-to-play-iraq-war-hero-megan-leavey-1201558979/
Snipped from article:
“House of Cards” star Kate Mara, who can currently be seen as Sue Storm in “Fantastic Four,” is set to topline in director Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s film about real-life hero Megan Leavey and her military combat dog Rex, who saved countless lives searching for roadside bombs during two tours in Iraq from 2004 to 2006...…The movie is based on the true story of Leavey, a young Marine who turned her life around by enlisting in the K9 unit. There, she was teamed with an aggressive combat dog named Rex. The pair formed a special bond and were deployed to Iraq as an elite bomb sniffing team. Together they served two tours of duty and completed more than 100 missions, saving innumerable lives.

@PM
Loved it, particularly as the beagle seemed to be having such a good time! Thanks for posting.
As humans I think we tend to wrongly attribute our own limitations to other species - dogs senses are clearly vastly superior to our own, although some are reluctant to admit/accept it. The beagle's sense of smell (in the film clip) is on a par with using a DNA test or finger printing to identify an individual, but the dog is a much quicker process. Medical dogs can detect cancer cells before any tests humans have developed can.
However much cleaning up was done in 5A, Eddie wasn't fooled for an instant. If medical dogs can literally smell out cell mutations inside living human bodies and cadaver (EVRD) dogs can locate a body buried 3 metres below ground under a layer of rotting meat joints (previous post about the dobermans) and beagles can run directly to passengers to reunite them with their forgotten items, I have no trouble believing that cadavers can leave trace molecules absorbed in a room, even when it has been cleaned with chemicals (bleach etc), which can be detected months later by a trained EVRD dog.

I am now told it was an advert . . . !
But brilliant anyway,
But one that was not an advert was the recent case in the USA
The one whooshed by the Mccanns as it shows - YET AGAIN -
1 the dog was correct
2 the parents did it
3 the parents lied, several times in several different ways
4 Allegedly the parents' own parents, the child's grandparents knew knew a lot more than they told the press.
Why are we surprised that the Mccanns whooshed it ?

Not strictly about dogs, but put here for continuity.

Forgotten that this was an old Sky News article, which Jill has just re-tweeted.
Although not attributed, as Chief Crime Reporter at Sky, presumably this would have been a Brunt article or at least passed across his desk at the time. What a difference a day (or maybe two years) brings Martin.
Keela's Nose Makes Her Top Dog
11:52, UK, Friday 30 December 2005
Keela is a top dog in the police world, earning more in a day than her force's Chief Constable by working on some of the country's highest-profile crimes.
The 16-month-old springer spaniel can sniff out the smallest samples of human blood - even after items have been cleaned or washed many times.
The South Yorkshire Police dog has already helped forces across the country, including working on the stabbing of Abigail Witchalls in Surrey.
Her going rate is £530 per day, plus expenses.
If she worked every day of the year, she would earn almost £200,000 - around £70,000 more than her force's Chief Constable.
In the New Year, Keela will be travelling to America to assist the FBI with two murder inquiries.
A South Yorkshire force spokeswoman said the crime scene investigation dog has saved more then £200,000 nationally since April this year, helping with investigations in Ireland, Cornwall, Wiltshire, Surrey and the Thames Valley areas.
Her handler, PC Martin Grime, has been responsible for training Keela, along with National Search Adviser Mark Harrison, since June last year.
Unlike ordinary police dogs, Keela has never taken part in the usual six-week training course but has been trained, bit by bit, by PC Grime every day.
Her programme involved training her to ignore decomposing body materials other than human blood.
Instead of barking when she smells blood, she has been trained to have a "passive" alert - freezing with her nose as near to the subject matter as possible without touching, to enable scientists to recover the sample quickly and efficiently.
This technique has saved time and money on major investigations.
South Yorkshire Chief Constable Meredydd Hughes said: "Keela's training gives the force an edge when it comes to forensic investigation, which we should recognise and use more often.
"We know we have an operationally excellent dog section, and our specialist dogs are being developed in a unique way."

Of all the purses in the world, it is perhaps the least likely to contain cash. But that did not stop Ruby the sniffer dog checking the Queen’s handbag when she was introduced to Her Majesty during a visit to the Home Office today.

Ruby, a six-year-old English Springer Spaniel who works for the Border Force at Heathrow Airport, knows that handbags are always a good place to check for ill-gotten gains, and went straight for the Queen’s distinctive Launer bag.
The Queen seemed amused as she reached down to pat Ruby, who has detected £10.5 million of illicit cash in the five years she has been a detector dog.
Her handler David Bellingham, 38, said: “She always goes for handbags because she knows that people carry money there, but she didn’t indicate this time. If she had found a large amount of cash she would have sat down with her nose pointing at the source.

“Ruby would normally be working at this time of day so I could feel her wanting to pull towards the Queen.
The Queen makes a speech in the foyer of the Home office Photo: Richard Pohle/The Times
“The Queen was asking about how the dog smells the money and I explained that the ink used to print it has quite a strong scent, a bit like the smell of a new magazine for humans, and Ruby is trained to indicate only when there is a strong scent to indicate a lot of money.
“She has had 1,500 finds so far, mainly in people’s bags but a lot of it strapped to people’s bodies as well.”
The Queen never carries cash to pay for goods, but is reported to sometimes carry a crisp £5 or £10 note for church collections.

A spaniel in sunglasses
When cadaver dogs alert to the scent of cadaver that means there is....cadaver scent.

I always thought it strange that Martin Grimes didn't hit back at the McCanns after they rubbished the performance of Eddie and Keela and practically accused him of setting them up. Why didn't he speak up and protect his reputation more?
