In 2006/07 Missing People were facing severe financial problems, it required a boost, new beginning.

Their words, not mine but why was this charity in this mess when It was supported by millionaires and billionaires like Branson, Cliff Richards etc.

And, Thank goodness for its new ambassador, eh. smilie

Because the Help Ben fund is to look for Ben. The MP version is to pay their £ 1.7 million salaries and expenses bill

Do they actually need any more help to pay their salary and expenses bill, when their website proudly emblazons their huge list of funders, headed by:

...and there is this interesting boast about the help they have received from the 'People's Postcode Lottery' (NOT the same as the National Lottery):

People's Postcode Lottery

Players of People's Postcode Lottery enable Missing People to be a lifeline when someone disappears. People's Postcode Lottery raises funds and awareness for charities across the country  - allowing them to achieve much more than ever before. We are thrilled to have received over £3.4m from players since our relationship began in 2008.

Dear Peter,

Thank you for your email. 100% of all donations made via the website help the charity deliver its mission to be a lifeline when someone disappears. Unfortunately, we are unable to allocate specific funds towards appeals for individual missing people.

If you would like to make a donation specifically towards the search for Ben Needham, you can do so through the Find Ben Needham website: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Kind regards,
The Missing People Team
[my emphases]
An honest answer. Meaning NO.
And even more revealing, that the funds are used towards the Charity "delivering its mission to be a lifeline'   What we might call a telephone !
and towards APPEALS, not searches.
In other words all they do is telephones and publicity. Nothing more.
And for that they need £1.7 MILLION before they start.

Get pedalling Kate.  They need your money.

Next question:

Can you send me your mission statement  - the number of children saved (repeat absconders not allowed to be entered more than once) and wether your mission statement has been changed in the years since MP started up. If more than one mission statement, please list all.
Thank you... smilie

Just looking at Gerry’s blogs as highlighted by cbeagle in the ‘Missing Statements’ thread and came upon this again:

13th July 2007

‘Spent a large part of the day at the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) headquarters in London. The work they are doing in the prevention and detection of child exploitation is fantastic and I have no doubt they are world leaders in many aspects of their work.

The statistics of child abduction in the UK, both attempted and successful cases, are staggering with over 1000 reported cases in 2003/4 and the figures show a year on year increase. The scale of the problem is much larger than Kate and I ever imagined and worryingly there does not appear to be reliable statistics for many countries in Europe. Clearly a lot of work has to be done to tackle this growing problem.’

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

So, he’s saying three a day! And he largely got away with spouting this nonsense at the time.

How many cases was it in the last twelve months that were reported in TM’s/Missing People’s ‘Amber alert’ type system?

ONE!

And she came home on her own when she wanted to.

Never picked up on this before, from The Guardian last July, re-tweeted on the feed today.

Snips:

Money from the £2m fund went to 34 charities with scores missing out and £170,148 – the second biggest single award – going to the charity [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], which has recently launched a helpline for sexual exploitation victims but does not specialise in helping child abuse survivors………

“The whole grants process needs to be looked at. The people who pushed to give Missing People charity money need to explain themselves – it is an absolute disgrace and an insult to every survivor.”
A spokesman for the Norfolk PCC office said smaller organisations fared well in the overall funding distribution.
He said: “All bids to both funds were subject to a robust and thorough assessment against a published set of criteria. Bids were subjected to an initial panel assessment by the Home Office against the published criteria and further scrutinised by a senior oversight board, chaired by the Police and Crime Commissioner for Norfolk, which made the final decisions.”

A spokeswoman for Missing People said it had launched a 24/7 telephone line for sexual exploitation victims and that demand for its services was growing significantly.
She said: “There is a very close link between a child repeatedly going missing and them being sexually exploited. At least 23% of the young people we support and safeguard are survivors of sexual abuse and/or continue to be at risk of sexual abuse. Research shows 70% of victims of child sexual exploitation have been missing.”

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

………………………………

Yet six months down the line no mention of sexual exploitation helpline on their front page statement below (or searching within their site) and why on earth would anybody wishing to report abuse go to a ‘missing’ site? I looked to see if they had opened a more appropriately named site, but couldn't find one.

Should this award be reviewed again as possible ‘fraudulent misrepresentation’ or what?

We are a lifeline when someone disappears

Missing People is the only charity in the UK which specialises in, and is dedicated to, bringing missing children and adults back together with their families. Some missing people you will have heard of, but many more you won’t. For their families, life without them can be a desperate and unbearable struggle. We are there for them 24 hours a day, every day of the year, at the end of a phone, text or email, ready to use every means possible to search for and find their missing loved ones and to provide vital on-going support to families where the agonising wait turns into years, not just days.

Just adding to DougD's post with a recent update from Missing People (the all-embracing 'charity' with purportedly ever-increasing 'vital function/assistance' that carefully opts out of disclosing any results and has a website that is completely meaningless apart from give us your money)

[ltr]Latest News [/ltr]
[ltr]21/01/2016:

Bob Geldof and Fiona Phillips urge public to sign up to Child Rescue Alert

Bob Geldof and Fiona Phillips today joined forces to raise awareness of Child Rescue Alert, the nationwide system designed to alert the public as quickly as possible to an abduction or a high risk child disappearance.

Members of the public can register to receive geographically-targeted alerts via text, email or app notifications for free in the rare event that a child is abducted in the UK. The system is managed by the charity Missing People, technology company Groupcall and the National Crime Agency.
“It’s a no-brainer,” said Bob Geldof co-founder of Groupcall, speaking at Bett 2016, the world’s leading event for learning technology. “If your child went missing and their life was in immediate danger you would want to get the message out in minutes. If you care about children’s safety please sign up today at childrescuealert.org.uk”.

Child Rescue Alert was launched in 2014 thanks to funding from players of People’s Postcode Lottery and over 315,000 people have since registered to receive alerts directly via text, email and app notifications. Many more member of the public can be reached through extensive networks on Twitter, Facebook, digital billboards and through media and corporate partnerships. The system is being funded in 2016 by Royal Mail, which has registered 124,000 of their postal workers’ PDAs to receive the alerts.

[ltr]30/11/2015:  [/ltr]
2016 Child Rescue Alert funder announced
To mark the one-year anniversary of its partnership with Child Rescue Alert partner Missing People, Royal Mail has announced that it is contributing £50,000 to fund the national Child Rescue Alert system in 2016.

Royal Mail will be funding the Child Rescue Alert service for a year, starting from January 2016. It will ensure the operation of a 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year system, for one year. The specific criteria and urgent nature of Child Rescue Alerts means that the charity’s expert helpline team must be trained and ready to issue an alert at any time.

The partnership between Royal Mail and Missing People was launched in November 2014, with Royal Mail distributing ‘high risk' alerts to its postmen and women through their handheld scanners. In its first year, fifty alerts have been issued to Royal Mail employees. Thirty five of those missing people have been found safe and well.

Jeffrey Oatham, Head of Corporate Responsibility and Community Investment, Royal Mail said: “Our £50,000 contribution marks the next step in our partnership with Missing People. Royal Mail is dedicated to supporting the communities that we serve. Royal Mail’s handheld scanners are already set up to receive Child Rescue Alerts and we are encouraging all of our 143,000 UK employees to sign up to receive Child Rescue Alerts on their personal mobiles. This can be done through the Child Rescue Alert website”.

Jo Youle, CEO, Missing People said: “Royal Mail’s funding of Child Rescue Alert next year will allow us to continue to support missing people, their families and police forces all around the UK”.
Missing People runs the Child Rescue Alert system with the CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection) command of the National Crime Agency and technology company Groupcall. When a Child Rescue Alert is issued, it is sent directly to both Royal Mail employees and individual members of the public, who can sign up for free to receive alerts by text message, email, app notifications and social media. Alerts reach many more people through broadcast and mainstream media including digital billboards.

Oh how I wish a serious, investigative journalist would look at this 'charity'.

Have a good read of this latest press release. How many child rescue alerts have been made in the last twelve months?

I'm making a mental note to ask my postman if he's subscribed to Child Rescue Alert and if he's received any corporate message to do so.

I hope others ask their postman too.

ETA: I've just had a thought - perhaps people can tweet a request for everyone to ask their postman/woman whether they've subscribed to CRA.

I've just asked my postman if he's ever heard of Missing People charity. Answer was no.

I asked him how long he's been a postman. 13 years.

I asked him if he's ever been approached by his company to receive a Child Rescue Alert on his mobile phone/handheld scanner. Answer was no.

Please tweet 'ask your postman' because mine had never heard of Missing People.

ETA: tweet the newspapers and give them your discovery. Ask the UK Press to ask their own postmen/women.

I hate Twitter but it is useful sometimes.
