Social media is powerful - McCann

The father of Madeleine McCann said social media is "powerful" and should be used to "improve the world" a s he backed a national alert system to help find missing children.


Kate and Gerry McCann, parents of missing girl Madeleine McCann arrive at the Mondrian London hotel to attend a function in aid of promoting Child Rescue Alert.

Gerry and Kate McCann, whose three-year-old daughter disappeared during a family holiday to Portugal in 2007, joined the parents of murdered schoolgirl April Jones to raise funds for the Child Rescue Alert with the charity Missing People.
It comes after an inquest was opened yesterday into the death of Brenda Leyland, whose body was found in a hotel room two days after she featured in a Sky News report exposing internet "trolling" of the McCanns.
Mr McCann declined to comment but said social media was an important tool for the Child Rescue Alert, a UK-wide system which uses email, text messages and websites including Twitter to try to secure the safe return of missing children.
Speaking at the Mondrian hotel in central London, Mr McCann said: "The key thing about social media is it's powerful. This is a way of using it to do good. That's what we should be using these powerful technologies for - to try and improve the world.
Asked whether they felt it was right for the media to identify internet trolls, Mr McCann replied: "I don't really want to talk about trolls, we're here very much to talk about child rescue."
Coral and Paul Jones called on Twitter and Facebook to do more to tackle internet trolls after they received "horrible" abuse online following the death of their five-year-old daughter who was kidnapped and murdered in October 2012.
Asked whether they had sympathy with Madeleine's parents who have previously voiced concerns about online abuse, Mrs Jones said: "We've had some ourselves and it took to going in the press and on the news to get it taken off.
"It is horrible, the people that do it."
Asked whether the police could do more to tackle online trolls, she replied: "It's the internet people as well because the police can't do everything."
Mr Jones said: "They should have their own policing force of some sort to do that, with legal ways to prosecute people."

Mrs Jones said she is still struggling to come to terms with her daughter's death.
Mark Bridger was given a whole life sentence after he was convicted of April's abduction and murder and of perverting the course of justice by unlawfully disposing, destroying or concealing her body.
April had been playing with friends close to her home on the Bryn Y Gog estate in Machynlleth, mid-Wales, when Bridger, a former slaughterhouse worker, enticed her into his car. Her body has never been found.
Following the recent two-year anniversary of her daughter's disappearance, Mrs Jones said: "I'm still struggling now to this day. We take each day as it comes. Everybody's different in how they cope. Me, personally, I take each day as it comes.
"Some days are better. My husband takes it different, my kids take it different."
Mr Jones added: "I have days where I'm absolutely fine. Two or three days on the trot. Then I have down days. I need to keep busy."
Mrs McCann said she believed the Child Rescue Alert could make "a huge difference" in finding missing children.
"You only have to look at the statistics to see how the amber alert in the USA has been successful - 685 children have been found alive and reunited with their families since it started," she said.
"I believe the Child Rescue Alert system could do the same here."
Mr McCann added: "I think it's an opportunity, the Child Rescue Alert, for the British public to help. In our case, there was a great outpouring of people wanting to help. It only takes one person coming forward, responding to that piece of media, that could save a child's life and nothing can be more important."

I subscribed to the site but did not get an alert that Alice Gross was missing. Therefore I don't think it works.

I remember when Shannon Matthews was first found, Clarence Mitchell got Sky News to read a McStatement about how pleased Kate and Gerry were that Shannon was found, and that it gave them hope.

MRNOODLES ....deep breath there! They are ideally suited to push for this. What could be more persuasive than a "poor, sad couple who lost their wee girl". I am totally with you on this Mr Noodles and can understand your frustration and anger. We all feel impotent and some of us suffer from the derision of others who think they know something about this poor couple and all this is about is a campaign of hate heaped upon them.
I personally have no time for sheeple who, having read a couple of articles a few years back, file it away only to resurrect it again when one of us brings their attention to the matter or a truly sad and disgraceful consequence unfolds. They stick their tuppence worth in, shake it about and withdraw a pound. Only it is a pound of our flesh and a shake of our hearts.
Last night I was subjected to a tirade on FB from "friends" of mine because I posted Sonia`s excellent video and invited anyone who felt suitably moved to comment and/or debate.
What a spectacular waste of my time. You cannot educate these ignoramuses. Needless to say my friends list is somewhat smaller today.
My own loved ones are expressing concern for my wellbeing because I am so involved in this matter. But that is only because, sad to say, they are not as moved as I am. I can forgive them because they are worried for me but if I cannot convince people who care about me that I am not a conspiracy theory nutjob, then what chance do any of us have out there in the jungle?
That`s why I hang out here because someone else understands what drives us. More power to us all.

All of the main social media players are based in America and they have millions of American users who value their 1st amendment. David Cameron has no jurisdiction over what is published in America. The only way Cameron could censor McCann dissent is to block sites like facebook and twitter in the UK, rather like they have blocked torrent sites.

Next week, the McCanns said they will be frantically 'Looking for Madeleine' IN the 5 star, Claridge's Hotel, Mayfair, London.

Was this trolling of Brenda Leyland to co-inside with this bash the mccanns went too,  to give them more ammo to try to fight their innocents

also if some of the pro.s are paid by the mccanns  was it them(mccanns) who ordered them  to troll Brenda.
 
I hope Brenda,s family takes good  legal advise and get justice for Brenda

Yep, this, like everything Team McCann do, was all choreographed meticulously. They didn't bank on their selected "troll" dying though.

I think one of the reasons that Brunt has vanished is that he realises the McCanns have just used him to this end and now left him to face the music.

I would bet my life that is their intention.. There is a massive (but covert) impetus to shut down dissenting voices. Who is part of this effort? Mr McCann, Leveson, Hacked Off.... Organised and willing to shut you down. It might even be that Brenda Leylands sad demise will underscore their validity and that commenting on boards is a sign of being mentally unwell/obsessive/lonely/ angry.... Add every negative label you can think of!
Commenting and analysis over a seven year period is viewed as trolling and unhealthy behaviour.... I must be the most unhealthy and sad person on this bloody planet! Been here a long time..7 long years and if I don't up and die I'm here to see the final conclusion...as a poster or silent observer.

I wouldn't be 'surprised' if the McCanns stood in front of a BBC camera and said, "we believe that MB's doorstepping of Brenda Leyland was absolutely disgusting. We are firmly of the belief that MB's outrageous behaviour towards a vulnerable elderly woman, who hadn't been charged with any offence, or even spoken to by the police, was totally unacceptable. Not just toward Brenda but also to other people that have never been charged with any offence. Would MB have spoken like that to a man? Kate and I, being doctors, are of the firm opinion that MB, of Sky News, with his er, live reporting, of BL, did, by his actions, possibly lead to poor Brenda taking her own life. MB, should, in our opinion, be seriously considering this position. Disgraceful"
