What a shame! I would have liked to have heard what they had to say. I wonder if Goncalo Amaral has also had his request refused?

I thought they wanted to go in the witness box Sally, but I may be wrong. It would have made great theatre, which might be the reason the Judge turned them down.

If so, here we have a ground for the appeal: we were not heard so we had no fair trail

Re: Mccann's refused permission to give evidence
Christobell, you may be correct. It was just that I had heard, a few weeks back that they wanted to give written evidence, rather than appear in person, but it was just hearsay, and I have no evidence to say that this is the case.Cristobell wrote:sallypelt wrote:Cristobell wrote:sallypelt wrote:I don't know how much truth is in this, but this was tweeted within the last few minutes:

Precisely! And of course it would have added new nothing to the stuff dished out by the previous witnesses for the claimants

I never expected them to take the stand.
They are involving lawyers to try and fool the public into thinking the Portuguese Judicial system is being unfair to them.
Katie and the wee man really are something else.

This is a libel trial. It's not a criminal court.
The UK MSM have steered well clear of reporting on this. If Martin Brunt is tweeting snips of info then why don't his paymasters report the whole of the libel trial and the reason for it?

Re: Mccann's refused permission to give evidence
[copied over from other thread]
I don't know if they will get away with that Portia as originally they were not going to appear, Gerry requested permission halfway through when he realised how badly their case was going. They are probably bitterly disappointed - egotists that they are, they probably believed a last minute plea to the Judge would erase all the crap she has heard so far and turn things around.
So if no more witnesses are to be heard, the final day will just consist of the Summing up by the lawyers for each party, as I understand it.

I would counter argue they are not on trial. They brought the case against the inspector, its been delayed numerous times and they've had enough time to prepare their arguments. Any info gleaned from Operation Grange will be ignored as they were not in existence when they instructed their lawyers to sue the inspector. The exit is that way, have a nice day.

Could it be to ensure that they do not say anything in court that could influence any future criminal court case?

Re: Mccann's refused permission to give evidence
In the end this is a libel trial - quite technical compared to a criminal trial in the UK. Either the book constitutes libel or it doesn't. Hearing from Kate and Gerry (or indeed amaral) doesn't really add anything. The judge has to make a technical decision about libel, and if there is libel then a decision about the extent of damage.
Sounds like the judge has heard enough to make the decisions required. I imagine whoever loses will appeal. That is a given.

I assume the judge has heard enough. If the Mc's were unable to produce professionally qualified witnesses to back up their claims then their own personal statements will add nothing. I am glad they have been denied the opportunity for more media manipulation because the press would have been all over it.

Conveniently forgetting to tell people that they were NOT on the 'witness' list at any time.
And conveniently 'forgetting' that they could have 'over ruled' their lawyer ID and gone into the witness box on the very first day, if they had wanted to be heard 'personally'

And brings them to court on Tuesday, just to prove she didn't 'fib' in her court 'evidence' you'll understand.

Another example of their crazy risk taking I think Jean. They will of course use this to say the Portuguese hate them (because of Goncalo Amaral) and they weren't given a fair trial. As you say, the fact that it was always within their power to give evidence in the witness box will probably be overlooked.
