Oscar Pistorius to appeal against bail conditions

Lawyers for South African athlete Oscar Pistorius, who is charged with murdering his girlfriend, are due to challenge his bail conditions at a court hearing.

His lawyers will argue that the Olympic and Paralympics star should be allowed to return to his home, and to travel.

Mr Pistorius also wants an end to supervision by a probation officer and compulsory drug and alcohol testing.

For a 'man' on bail for shooting and killing his girlfriend - that is not under dispute - he doesn't want much, does he? Bloody cheek.
I'm sure Reeva Steenkamp would have liked to see family, travel etc......
But that's not going to happen now is it?

His representatives argue that the double-amputee athlete is not a flight risk and should have the option of travelling outside South Africa as long as he has official permission.

It comes as a close friend said that the athlete is a "broken man".

The Judge who relaxes the bail condition is either naive or corrupted.
Requiring OP to hand over his passport within 24 hours of returning to the country is bloody useless, because it is on the premise that he returns. Surely the point of asking for the bail to be relaxed to enable him to get out of the country means he can choose to stay away and avoid the consequences.
With him awaiting trial for homicide what's the point of having him continue to represent the country? Is SA going to be honoured by an athlete if in the eventuality he's found guilty?

The Judge may end up red face, or facing disciplinary inquest when OP flees the country.

Absolutely ridiculous state of affairs isn't it. Why is he being allowed to represent SA until his trial is over and found not guilty?

My heart goes out to Reeva's parents. How must they be feeling hearing this news?

I was just thinking earlier it would be irony if he should come to UK then decide not to return - well the first part seems about to happen (if some idiot invite him) and next part "not to return" is left to be seen. Well, I must be psychic, partially for now at least.

UK risks turning into a haven for criminals who want to escape justice of another jurisdiction.

IMO, while awaiting trial he should not be allowed to travel out of the country.
His legal team was taking the piss when they cited the reason for wanting bail condition changed was so that he can travel away "to avoid media attention". Hello, participating in an international sporting event attracts media attention!

I have been seeing pregnancies in women around me, who didn't even know themselves yet ...
It would/could explain, though, a row: it was a very short relationship, a couple of months if I'm not mistaken and a pregnancy which "he" didn't fancy and she didn't want to abort, might have triggered a fierce argument. Not saying, just saying ...

Oscar Pistorius reappears in South African court

South African athlete Oscar Pistorius is back before Pretoria magistrates' court over the killing of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

The prosecution is expected to serve the athlete with an indictment for the premeditated murder of his girlfriend. A trial date will also be set.
Mr Pistorius, 26, denies murdering Reeva Steenkamp, saying he shot her after mistaking her for an intruder.

He was granted bail in February and has since resumed some low-key training.

The double amputee won gold at the London 2012 Paralympic Games and also competed at the Olympics.
His arrest in February stunned many South Africans who saw him as a national sporting hero after his long legal battle to be able to take part in the Olympics.

Ballistic evidence
State prosecutors are arguing that the killing was premeditated, a charge which carries a sentence of life imprisonment. They say he killed Ms Steenkamp intentionally after a fight.

But Mr Pistorius denies committing murder, claiming he shot his girlfriend through the bathroom door of his upmarket house in Pretoria after mistaking her for a burglar.

The prosecution is expected to hand over details of its case against Mr Pistorius at Monday's hearing, including a witness list and forensic reports.

Much depends on ballistic evidence from the bathroom where Ms Steenkamp was shot, says the BBC's Africa Correspondent Andrew Harding.

South African newspapers have reported that at least some of that forensic evidence appears to back up Mr Pistorius's version of events, he continues.

the Associated Press news agency that additional charges might be added to the indictment but did not offer any details.
Last week, the police wrapped up their six-month investigation into Ms Steenkamp's killing.

The prosecutor in the case said the dates of 3 to 20 March had been mutually agreed for the trial.

The prosecution handed a copy of the indictment to Mr Pistorius.

Mr Pistorius denies murdering Ms Steenkamp. He says he shot her after mistaking her for an intruder.

During Monday's brief hearing, prosecutor Gerrie Nel also said he planned to transfer case to the high court: "We have prepared the indictment."

Firing a warning shot to a suspected intruder who can't be seen let's them know you have a gun. Firing four shots through a closed door into a small toilet is going to be very difficult to explain.

I doubt (and it's only my opinion) that Reeva didn't scream at the first shot.

The autopsy would show that.
A man with fiery temper doesn't take much to get triggered off.
Every little thing even thing of no importance can trigger out the violence in a man with that trait.
For someone to fire 4 shots into a small enclosed space he meant to kill no matter who he thought was in the cubicle.
No excuse for 4 shots whatsoever.

On the other side you are taught that when you have to shoot to shoot for complete disablement, iow your adversary should not be able to get back at you. I understand that neighbors heard screams between the shots. Also the guard is said to have called after the shooting and Pistorius allegedly said "everything was fine". So it all looks a bit fishy.

ETA: it is such a sad case: 2 young lives annihilated.

'Poor' McCanns, parapono? On the contrary, one dead child = 2 extremely rich parents who will no doubt produce more 'expert witnesses' at their trial for murder than those Pistorius has pulled out of the hat for his.
