Sorry, I got confused, there were legal fees for administrating the fund 68k and legal fees in merchandise and campaigning,arojnd 111k, both of which added up to that amount, so yes lawyers getting rich, im sure trademarking madeleines face and name and all that jazz cost a bit, thats exactly what one does two weeks after you lose your child

Let's hope things don't get diluted if there is to be negotiations with three other parties too.

Presumably this means that the McCanns

A cynic would wonder if the McCanns' late fund account filing and the timing of this settlement is merely a coincidence. I also wonder if they've decided it's time to close the fund and will use the settlement (assuming they have to pay out) as their excuse.

You know, I tend to read this forum every day or two, like I have for a number of years, but now and again some things have made me stray. I know I only became a member this month, so please don't jump on me when I say this, but a genuine newbie (to the forum, not the case) does/should have valid opinions and be heard too . Posters like Ednumbers do this place no favour at all; it's frustrating, it's off-putting and she will be blowing on her nails in satisfaction at the derailment of a pretty important thread, (time and time again in this instance) job done. Again.

I intended to register last year, I think it was, but the constant engaging with those intent on derailing put me off and I strayed from the forum in frustration. The pro's name was something like kiko/kika, and Ed writes exactly like her. I understand the need to engage with genuine doubters, this is a pretty polite forum, but these people aren't even trolls. They don't defend the McCanns like the genuine eejits who believe in 'this poor couple', I'd bet my house the pros know McCanns are guilty of something. I know most, if not all, on here are aware why they do it, so please understand I am not patronising. I'm pretty sure reading Guests can see right through it too, after all they're reading this forum as their curiosity is obviously piqued at what is emerging with this case by the day, and are no longer satisfied by TM's portrayal of events, libel trials etc., included. It is the thought of them turning away with frustration (as I admittedly did) when the thread gets sidetracked with nonsense from the likes of Ednumbers.

I sincerely don't understand the need to engage with them and totally agree with Monkey Mind. I know I certainly wouldn't keep at it if I were being ignored .... unless I were being paid. Please understand I mean no offence to anyone here, I'm simply frustrated that a headline such as this thread has captured thousands' attention and those thousands talk, we want them to keep coming back to read and go on talking, or even better, register, unlike me who didn't until a few weeks ago. As an aside, I was finally moved to register to be vocal in my support of Mr Bennett, and of course in my disdain of the McCanns. Not to mention discussing the case with you all, obviously! :-)

I have always thought the webmaster was Kate. Didn't accounts say the Fund didn't employ anyone? From the off, we have been led to believe that K&G do not read the internet, or deal with the general public directly. We are led to believe they have a team working for them voluntarily, and they do not with such lowly office tasks as updating their facebook with news of the search, their hopes or fears. They cannot take time away from whatever it is they are doing, to thank the loony candle lighters personally?

I don't buy their 'we don't read it' argument. As a self confessed, narcissistic googler of my own name, I know the urge is irresistible. Given their fighting stance from the beginning, we have seen many examples of their true personalities. Moments, where an interviewer has gone off the approved script. The sullen, sulky way in which Kate describes in so many interviews, the moment Maddy asked why they didn't come when her and Sian cried. Her lacklustre performance on GMT on being made Ambassador for Missing People. I am sure we all have lots of examples.

Apart from the Pope, and maybe the Queen, don't most people do their own social networks? Why 'webmaster' - why so impersonal? Why not thank people in their own names? Bizarre.

Now have copy of book, and am trying to de-construct it.

I have only been a member for a year and before I joined I'd never seen or heard of this forum. But I was intrigued by this case after coming across Kate's book and decided to join because I liked some of the intelligent, lively debates that were taking place and could see that it was a well moderated forum.
I understand the point you are making and agree that some threads can sometimes become derailed and quite irrelevant. I am sure many of us feel we have nothing to contribute when this happens and switch off our laptop for the night. I really don't know how much of it can be attributed to deliberate attempts by some people to deflect others from the topic and engage them in a pointless slanging match. I too believe the best way to deal with them is to ignore them but I also cheer those with the energy to bash them into submission. clapping

For the most part though, a forum such as this can only thrive if we remain inclusive and refrain from banning members too hastily, providing they have valid opinions or theses and are willing to join in a debate in a reasonably civilised manner.

Oh it seems most definitely so. They were late in filing the Accounts.
Their decision to jump of their sinking ship isn't spur of the moment one.
They must have known they were going to chicken out, hence the ring-fenced of what's left of the fund for the search, for the first time in the Fund history. Which is bit bizzare since they've also suspended *search* citing Review as reason.
Why ring-fenced the fund for search now? The timing is very suspect.

They must think lawyers are very stupid. If they'd been using Fund to pay legal cost of ID, then there is no excuse now to say the Fund can't be used for legal settlement.

Maybe now that their expected compensation from the other party is pie in the sky, instead they have to folk out compensation, not forgetting legal costs of two sides as well, they put in measures to stop claims on the Fund. Too late for that one would think.
Besides, it is stupid to play silly game like that. Because when it is legally obliged upon you to settle costs, you have to pay regardless, even if it means selling off their assets, or even selling off their backsides for that matter if it comes to that. Or risk going to jail in lieu of payment.

They are going to play very dirty as usual. I can't wait to see what games they will come up with.

No one silenced the mccanns. There is just a legal obligation upon them to not comment on ongoing case.
But they've proven they are incapable of observing that legal obligation before, so their change of mind now to suddenly become obedient, under this set of circumstances is very suspicious to say the least.

If what you claimed is true, then in effect you are implying their site is a scam and their *search* bogus!

The timing if it with the reports coming out of Portugal with SY and the Portuguese team meeting and their cancellation of the trial seems a little coincidental.
