I saw a report of this on Yahoo news yesterday, and all of the comments were very negative. Maybe the general public are starting to see through the McCanns at last.

It would be good if Phil was to ask her this live on Tv. I would be interested to see her reaction.
I am curious to know why this has only just been announced. It's been suggested before I think. Given the court cases coming up, doing something like this certainly raises her profile again. I imagine that many people would think that they can't be involved in Madeleine's disappearance, as she wouldn't have the nerve to do something like this if she was. Sometimes I even ask myself that! (And then I remember the dogs, the ever changing stories, the fund...)
Hi Uppatoffee. Take away the dogs, the ever changing story, the fund. They are irrelevant, just at this point in time. The bottom line in this story is the fact that the children were left alone by this woman in order to go out socialising. So even IF the abduction theory was true, it does not take away from the fact that this charity has appointed somebody who has committed an act that other parents have in the past been jailed for.
That somebody, somewhere, has chosen this person to become an Ambassador for their cause is disgusting, that she herself thinks so highly of herself to take up the position is twice as disgusting.

On a positive note.
Her appointment gives the organisation some press coverage which, along with the billboard scheme they are running, may help to find some of the children that are missing.

If it proves to be a salaried position I sincerely hope the charity advertised it as a job, provided criteria and adhered to employment legislation. Of course I am assuming that charities who employ people are subject to the usual rules of engagement. Oh well, it's 10.30am. Rennies on standby to receive the news.

A more positive note would be to engage someone who did not neglect their children. It wasn't just one child that was left alone, it was three children under the age of four.

Re: Kate McCann becomes ambassador for missing people
I have been keeping very quiet lately and taking a back seat, so as to take things in and understand what is going on, but, this has incensed me.
I agree with everything you are all saying, how in the name of God can a woman who thinks it is the norm to leave three babies alone in an apartment out of sight and earshot for at least 5 nights whilst in her own words the apartment was unlocked, even though there were dangerous stairs outside and tables and chairs to climb on enabling any child to fall over balconies or the steep concrete staircase, let alone find medications in the apartment, cleaning fluids, fall on the hard tiled fall, be ill, be scared, have a nightmare, or wake up and call for your Mummy or Daddy and get no response and lie there wondering where on earth they are and why they don't come, can be made an ambassador for a missing persons charity. What type of signal does this give to any parent who thinks it is 'the norm' to leave children home alone. They should be ashamed of themselves and in my opinion this could backfire on them big time.
One thing I find very strange - the whole McCann thing has been very very quiet lately, no news, yet this weekend we have the Birch story, which no tabloid picked up on and now today we have this along with a TV interview! I do hope the two are not connected in anyway!!
Who exactly runs this charity and how long has it been running?

Whether we agree with their choice of Ambassador or not, it cannot be denied that Kate McCann will quite likely get these missing children some media coverage, and that is a good thing, isn't it?

Re: Kate McCann becomes ambassador for missing people
This charity imo has done nothing to be proud of today. The people who rely and receive the services of this charity are people who haven't many other options. They have none of the extraordinary privileges of the McCanns in their loss of Madeleine. To have a woman who neglected her small children and all of the subsequent things she did/did not do, not answering questions posed by the PJ, writing a bewk, not actually physically searching etc, as an ambassador that will be of good to those who suffer is to my mind a very big slap in the face. The only thing KM can bring to this particular party is how to gain media attention and she hasn't been getting much of that lately - until today. All this media planning and today is the chosen day. Close the fund Kate and maybe people would have an inkling of respect for you.

Meagain, whilst I admire your positivity, sadly I could not agree with what you say.
Yes, there will be publicity generated and indeed we can see there already has been, on sites such as this. No such thing as bad publicity ? In this case, I think there is.
The parents of the missing children associated with this charity deserve better than they have been given today. An ambassador who went out drinking and left tiny little children alone and ever since has marketed her own missing daughter like some commodity or new kitchen gadget.
Sometimes in life, there are things that are just not acceptable and this is one of them. For me, anyway, it is one step too far.

If it were one of my children who was missing the LAST person I would want gaining publicity for them is a woman who failed in every sense of the word to do anything positive to find her daughter, the same daughter that went missing because they chose to leave her and with two younger children ALONE FOR 5 NIGHTS IN AN UNLOCKED APARTMENT. I am sorry if you find this rude but there is nothing good in any of the media coverage this woman gets. Just because they have 'friends' in the right places and they think because they have kept MM in the 'public eye' and have a 'wider agenda' does not mean they are actively seeking the whereabouts of their daughter. The problem is that it will get more coverage for Maddie than any of the other children. Do you ever see any of their faces on a front page?
I really doubt this is going to change. Maddie's little face sells papers - so I think that her little - outdated, photoshopped little face will still be gracing the front pages with just different messages underneath. But who's going to read those? Only people like you and me who know there's a lot more to this story.
Now if they merged the Madeleine Fund with the missingpeople or donated a serious amount - I think it's just another money spinning ruse. Just like that of Booth and Meyer without whom the charity they 'worked' for would have been many tens of thousands better off.
It's the case with a lot of charities - over here I'm just withdrawing my support from two of these because they are paying 'celebrities' up to half a million a year to promote the charity? So the 'face of charity' isn't doing any giving at all - this is in fact the case in a lot of charities.
Whereas e.g.'Save the Children Fund' does do a lot of good work, as far as I know, Princess Anne ( in the past people like Ustinov and Audrey Hepburn) do a lot of work for nothing for these charities.

Hmm, guess she wasn't expecting the question about Birch. No eye contact when replying. Interesting that she mentioned that the Met let them know that it was being printed in advance of it appearing in the press. However it seemed that she doesn't have much of an idea about the investigation that SY are doing. She did say that they were hoping the case would be reopened though.

I think she 'had' to say that they were hoping the case will be reopened - she would look a bit daft on live TV having just been made the ambassador for a missing persons charity saying that they don't want it reopened. Back to the real world I would imagine they are doing everything in their power for the case to NOT be reopened.
What I found most odd was (as we have already said about this revelation from Birch - nutter or not) WHY would any parent whose child has been reported missing in the area that Birch is talking about not want to follow it up - who cares if it proves nothing at least then they would know for sure! Why was she not saying 'whilst I think there is probably nothing to this story we are pushing for the site to be investigated, we are obviously deeply worried there may be some truth in what he is saying and therefore we will leave no stone unturned!!!'

Re: Kate McCann becomes ambassador for missing people
I've just been onto the findmadeleine website. Did you know that once you click on the shop there is no back button to return you to the homepage! Anyway, the interview on This Morning included age progression photos and a mention at the end (probably insisted upon) of holiday packs. Kate spoke of age progression photos. I clicked onto the t shirt button and got the iconic photo of Madeleine aged almost four - good product information at least I knew what I could purchase. I then clicked onto the holiday pack and there is no information. I don't know what I'm buying, and yes I'm buying Kate otherwise it wouldn't be an online store.

Re: Kate McCann becomes ambassador for missing people
Good choice.
Ambassador for Missing Children has a certain ring to it.
She can show people how to do it properly, instruct people who are not sure how to lose a child, and then show them the correct way to act afterwards.
Sit indoors for a long time in the dark. Write a diary; visit foreign countries, but not those where there might have been a sighting; write a million pound best-seler book about yourself, but include the child's name once or twice; collect money to spend on things;
and so on
I think she is the perfect choice.
Ambassador for Searching for Missing Children ? Now that would be something else entirely.

Kate was launched today. Twice in the banal interview that is This Morning's trademark was the word 'launch' mentioned. I notice that she was sitting alone on the sofa. I notice that no-one senior (or even junior for that matter) was there to promote the charity and give it credibility.

Actually if she were a true ambassador for missing people, she would want the site dug up anyway. Perhaps Birch is nuts, but perhaps there is someobdy and not necessarily Madeleine, buried there. So in theory, another family's mind may be put at rest if somebody were discovered on the site as Birch suggests. (Not suggesting anything untoward on part of the Murats).
So Kate should remember, she needs to think of other families now too, not just herself. Wow this is going to be a difficult job for Katie.

That is a very good point aquila, why was there no representative from the Missing People charity alongside her.
