Tracie Andrews 'unrepentant' as she is freed from jail

Tracie Andrews, who killed her fiancé in one of Britain’s most notorious murders, will walk free from prison this week as unrepentant as the day she was jailed.

Tracie Andrews in 1997 By Murray Wardrop

11:54AM BST 26 Jul 2011

The 41-year-old was handed a life sentence in 1996 after stabbing Lee Harvey 37 times and then claiming he had been attacked by a road rage driver to cover her tracks.

But the former barmaid, who has had £5,000 of facial plastic surgery at taxpayers’ expense while in jail, still refuses to accept responsibility for her crime.

Andrews, who has changed her name to Tia Carter, is due to be released on Thursday from Askham Grange open prison, near York, where she has spent the last part of her 14-year term.

“She categorically refuses to take the blame,” a family friend told the Daily Mail.

“Her attitude is she has done her time and the slate is now clean. She sees no reason to say sorry to anyone.

“Her family wanted her to make a public statement on her release, for the first time fully admitting what happened and expressing her regret and sorrow over Lee’s death.

“They take the view that unless she shows public remorse, she will be a target for hate. But she has refused to listen and has said repeatedly, point-blank, that she will not say anything to anyone.

“She says that, having paid her debt to society, it is her human right to be left alone.”

Andrews had surgery on the NHS to alter her distinctive jaw and has dyed her blonde hair brown as she attempts to restart her life with a new identity.

The Ministry of Justice rejected her request for lifetime anonymity, which Maxine Carr, 34, the partner of Soham killer Ian Huntley, received on her release seven years ago. Andrews will be kept under observation until early next year.

Andrews murdered Mr Harvey, 25, during a row as they drove along a country road in Worcestershire.

She cut his throat and stabbed him with a penknife in the back, face, neck and chest, leaving him to bleed to death.

Andrews appeared on television with police and Mr Harvey’s parents Ray and Maureen two days after the murder, tearfully pleading for information to catch the killer.

She maintained at her trial in 1997 that a maniac road rage driver had carried out the attack.

Andrews later confessed to her crime in a letter from prison but refused to apologise or accept responsibility.

It is understood that Andrews will initially live in a secure ‘approved residence’ in the north of England on her release, with a night curfew.

She will not be able to go within 50 miles of the Harveys Birmingham home without informing them and the police.

This means she cannot stay with her mother Irene in Warwickshire or at her 20-year-old daughter Karla’s home in Walsall.

Mrs Harvey, 65, previously said she would never forgive Andrews.

“All we have left are memories and a grave while she’s ready to carry on as if nothing happened. She is evil,” Mrs Harvey said.

So Tracie Andrews was handed a life sentence in 1996 and is being released next week. How is that a life sentence?

Who paid for her facial surgery and where did she get it done? Do they do plastic sugery in prison then or did she get it done whilst she was on her day release shopping trips?

Lee Harvey's parents were on ITV's This Morning yesterday morning. They were fuming that she is been released after only 14 years in jail. They said is that what their son's life was worth - 14 years in jail.

A photo of Andrews was shown with her new face and brown hair so she will be known wherever she goes now.

Lee's mother did say she was very worried that she may pass Andrews in the street one day and does not believe that 14 years in jail could change a cold-hearted murderer. Mr & Mrs Harvey said they are having a meeting with a Government official to take up the point that the family of victims are completely ignored whilst criminals and their families have all the help they need thrown at them. The Harveys had no legal representative in Court whilst Andrews was given a barrister, a solicitor and welfare help.

I sincerely hope that they are listened to for the sake of all victims' families and future ones.
