A PRAYER gathering to remember Madeleine McCann on the milestone 13th anniversary of her disappearance has been cancelled because of the coronavirus lockdown.
Maddie’s parents Kate and Gerry have been forced to axe the popular annual service for the first time but are still urging local villagers and well wishers to come together remotely to mark the poignant occasion.
The family will be sharing prayers and readings online as they spend the harrowing anniversary behind closed doors at their home in Rothley, Leics.
Normally heart doctor Gerry and ex GP Kate walk a mile from their house to the village war memorial, where over the past years many supporters have congregated for the informal outdoor event.A candle still burns around the clock as a beacon of hope for the world’s most famous missing child.
Maddie’s great uncle, retired head teacher and local resident Brian Kennedy, 80, said: “Present circumstances make our usual gathering impossible so it will all have to be done at long distance. We are asking members of our own churches here in Rothley as well as some others to remember the day with some short prayers and readings via email and the various internet sites."
Three-year-old Maddie vanished from a holiday apartment in Portugal’s Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007. She had been left sleeping alone with her younger twin siblings while her parents were dining in a nearby tapas restaurant with their seven pals.
Her horrified mum discovered she was missing from her bed in the seaside complex as she went to check on her shortly after 10pm.
GLIMMER OF HOPE
Kate, 52, and Gerry, 51, cling onto a glimmer of hope that Maddie - who would shortly turn 17 - could still be alive.
British cops have requested new funding to continue the global search for the teen which is set to be approved by the Home Office.
Family spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: “It is good news that the Met Police are seeking a new budget to continue the hunt for Madeleine. Kate and Gerry are greatly encouraged that officers still believe there is active work left to be done.

Re: MADDIE EVENT OFF Service to remember Madeleine McCann 13 years after her disappearance cancelled due to coronavirus
This is just an excuse to not have the event take place. Lets be honest, how many people will attend? There are usually only a handful, and as i remember on one occasion we counted eight people and a dog, most of whom were McCann family members. Olive Oyl and co. of course, reported that hundreds had turned out, but we didn't see them.
Poor Kate and Gerry are going to miss the balloons, laughter and donations that they so much enjoyed at the first service in PDL, a few days after they reported her missing. Guess they'll just have to rely on the fees for selling this story to the gutter press.
What are this pair doing to assist the NHS with Covid-19? They are doctors after all.

The War Memorial is an inappropriate location IMO.
what will happen to the "search" next year. Madeleine won't be found, but she would be 18 and no longer a Ward of Court. Will the Met close the case?

But is it ?Ladyinred wrote:The War Memorial is an inappropriate location IMO.
A War Memorial is the focus for people's private thoughts for the dead, and by extension for "those who have no memorial", or whose memorial is far away
All these were honoured in their generations, and were the glory of their times.
There be of them, that have left a name behind them, that their praises might be reported.
And some there be, which have no memorial; who are perished, as though they had never been;Re: MADDIE EVENT OFF Service to remember Madeleine McCann 13 years after her disappearance cancelled due to coronavirus
But Madeleine was not involved in any war.
The family could create a memorial garden. Use the Fund!

A war of attrition?
The media/government/police have been trying to wear us down for almost 13 years with their bolleaux about a dead child.

That takes me back to my thoughts over yonder.
NHS staff are public servants, we pay their wages. I don't know about Kate McCann, her current situation has never been disclosed, other than 'working in another area of medicine' or some such words. Professor McCann however, is allowed to continue working unencumbered despite being a prime suspect in the disappearance of his own daughter.
Do we, the public - the paymasters, get any say? Nah!
That aside, I've often wondered when the media tells us how patients with life threatening illnesses, other than carriers of the coronavirus, are being neglected by the NHS and could die as a result.
Are medical specialists from all aspects taken from their normal work and drafted into ICU and general wards housing coronavirus patients?
Nah - I doubt it.

There is always the consideration that British people who have been God fearing taxpayers and have retired, moved to warmer climes, settled for a stymied plank on pensions, not bothered the NHS to cost them a single cent are now outcasts.

If they were doing any Corona virus stuff, they would make sure we knew about it. There would be 'photos of them gowned up and masked, with Cuddlecat on a respirator, under a 'do not resuscitate' sign.

I agree 100%, it's totally inappropriate. Rothley Memorial is a war memorial..
They care not for who or what they defile in their quest for positive publicity. It's thoroughly sickening.
The idea of a memorial garden in the name of Madeleine McCann is perfect. All the locals said to flock to the war memorial every year to commemorate Madeleine McCann's 'abduction', could help with set up and general maintenance thereafter. I'm sure they would be more than willing.
