They didn't tell the truth

Moura says on the record in this interview that, in the initial stages, the McCanns were not telling the truth.
That much is plain from all the contradictions and major discrepancies you can find amongst the witness statements, given to the police, of the McCanns and their 'Tapas 9' friends.
Why would the desperate, innocent parents and their group of friends tell a series of lies to the police?
Unless they were intent on covering up someting very nasty?
Moura also reminds us that the McCanns were No. 1 suspects - but didn't think to mention Eddie and Keela when asked why.
