Madeleine McCann's parents are launching an online petition to help force a UK and Portuguese joint review of all evidence in the case of their missing daughter.
They hope it can lead to a new police investigation into the girl's disappearance from the family's rented holiday apartment in Portugal three-and-a-half years ago today.
Kate and Gerry McCann also accused Home Secretary Theresa May of offering "words, but no action" to help the search for their daughter.
Mrs McCann said: "Reviews are done in all major investigations, at least in this country.
"The benefits of pulling together different bits of evidence can be enormous but, until that is done, we can't be sure what has been missed.
I can't get my head around the fact that the Government has given up on Madeleine
Kate McCann
"You have to ask why it isn't being done in Madeleine's case. What is the block?"
An independent report by Jim Gamble, of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre, is thought to back the couple's demand for a review of all the evidence gathered by British and Portuguese police.
The report was commissioned by Labour Home Secretary Alan Johnson but not completed until the summer, when Mrs May took office under the coalition Government.
Yet the Home Office refuses to disclose its recommendations to the McCanns.
Madeleine disappeared in Portugal three-and-a-half years ago
"There is no reason why the contents of the report can't be made available to us. They say some of it is sensitive, but we are Madeleine's parents for goodness sake," said Mr McCann.
"We've made it clear we will not divulge any of it except to help our own investigators."
The couple met Mrs May in August, but say they were left with little optimism of government help.
Mrs McCann said: "We didn't get answers. We got a lot of words but no action, nothing concrete. I can't get my head around the fact that the Government has given up on Madeleine."
It is incredible to think that for the last two years and three months no police force has proactively been doing anything to help us find Madeleine.
McCanns' petition plea letter
The couple are also writing to their regular supporters asking for more money because funds are in danger of running out by the Spring, as their own private investigators continue to explore potential evidence in Portugal and elsewhere.
The Home Office said in a statement: "The Home Secretary has met Kate and Gerry McCann and is deeply sympathetic to their situation.
"The Government wants to ensure that everything feasible is being done to progress the search for Madeleine."

The McCanns are not privileged people - the were suspects at one time - they have no such priority to see any files held by any Government body. Even if they requested a FOI in respect of these files they would not get them.

The McCanns are the child neglecting parents of a missing youngster, who have not been cleared of being directly involved in her disappearance. That is the sad and shocking truth of the matter.

Goncalo Amaral interview
Q – They [McCanns] have appeared in all the media to announce the disappearance of their daughter and if it ends up that they have done it, what are they, psychopaths?
A – No, they are human. If the McCanns admit that their daughter is dead, they can no longer collect money from the Maddie fund, and that's a lot of money, over one million pounds. That's why they say that the girl was abducted.

I can't get my head around the fact that the Government has given up on Madeleine."
Well Mrs. McCann, most parents can't get their head around a supposedly intelligent couple who were blessed with three beautiful children opting to leave them alone in an unlocked apartment whilst they wined and dined with their pals. In fact one could say that you gave up your parental responsibilties pretty much every night of that holiday. Actually let me go one step further, you also gave up your parental responsibilities when leaving your children in the hands of bunch of young girls employed in MW creche.
Effectively Mrs. McCann...you and your husband gave up on your children.

Appologies for my poor memory, my question is this - Has KM (or anyone else) ever given any (creditable or otherwise) explaination for her refusing to answer the questions?
How was her refusal explained?
Thanks

I thought she made an excuse that the lawyer told her not to answer them.

Would that be the occasion when Justine McGuinness claimed that both her and Kate were giggling and sending text messages to their friends from the police station?

Apparently her lawyer advised her not to answer any of the questions asked.

I also read that she was told by her lawyer not to answer any questions. However Kate McCann, could have told her lawyer, that under no circumstances, would she refuse to answer any questions regarding Madeleine's disappearance. She didn't and when she was told that by not answering the questions, she would be hindering the investigation into Madeleine's disappearance, she still refused to answer the questions.
In my opinion, when Kate McCann was told that by refusing to answer the 48 questions, she would be hindering the investigation, it was like music to her ears. The last thing Kate McCann wanted, was an investigation, that would lead the PJ to Madeleine's whereabouts.
