Madeleine McCann search: Kate McCann and Gerry McCann plead for donations
By Martin Fricker 3/11/2010
Kate and Gerry in moving plea
Kate and Gerry McCann yesterday revealed money is running out to fund their desperate search for missing daughter Madeleine.
As the couple have retreated from the limelight, so contributions to a kitty which once topped £2million are drying up.
There is now less than £300,000 in the Find Madeleine fund and the desperate parents are publicly seeking donations for the first time since their little girl vanished on May 3, 2007.
Gerry said: "There was a huge amount of money put into the search but at this point we are asking people - if they are happy to do so - to donate to the fund."
Kate added: "We were fortunate enough that people donated, which enabled us to search for Madeleine.
"Without the fund nobody at all would be looking for Madeleine, so we are obviously grateful for that."
A letter written by Gerry will be sent out today to friends and celebrity supporters including David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Sir Richard Branson and JK Rowling.
Madeleine vanished while on a family holiday in Praia da Luz, Portugal.

Her parents yesterday also launched an online petition calling on the UK and Portuguese government to carry out a joint review of the case.
Kate hit out at the ConDem coalition for failing to follow on from a review ordered by former Home Secretary Alan Johnson.
Having spoken with current Home Secretary Theresa May, the mum said: "Certainly when we met they hadn't read it."
Kate and Gerry, both 42, held hands throughout a first UK press interview in three years. They spoke movingly of their five-year-old twins Sean and Amelie - now two years older than Madeleine was when she vanished.
Kate said: "They talk about when Madeleine comes back and know we are still looking to find her.
"We went to a school service recently and they were asked how many brothers and sisters they have. Sean said, 'I have two sisters' and Amelie said, 'I have a sister and a brother'.
That was lovely." Gerry added: "They know we're in meetings and going to Portugal and spending time when we're not with them trying to find their sister. We cannot accept Madeleine is dead without concrete evidence she is."
Kate said: "I still see Madeleine's friends.
"I imagine Madeleine being that tall, that slim. She is out there alive and to give up on her, I just can't get my head round that. I still talk to her every day."

Why didn't they just send the letters to these multimillionaires without going to the press to bother the public for money, especially in times of hardship with the recession and spending cuts?

These people must enjoy being regarded as disgusting, why else do they carry on this farce?
FGS get them into court so they can either prove their innocence or go to jail.

Naming the millionaires publicly is the McCanns way of putting pressure on them. They have no shame, and don't give a toss if the money is given reluctantly or not - as long as they get it! They are desperate...... the three wise judges have thwarted their plans to silence and destroy Dr Amaral and they are going to have to pay up big time.
This greedy pair of child neglectors are all washed up, and they know it.
tick......... tock........ McCanns

Great comment left on Daily Mail article
I agree with all the above comments. But I cannot get it out of my head the 60 page booklet: What really happened to Madeleine McCann which can be viewed on the internet. So many many questions. I feel really sorry for the two remaining McCann children what sort of life have they or will they have. I hope their parents look after them and treasure them. No one will ever know the truth, apart from the person(s) that abducted/murdered that poor little girl, but this is a McCann family problem. Sell the house, live in a tent, use your lucrative doctors salaries. Do what you have to do, but don't ask/beg for the money to be tipped into your pockets. The rest of us are dealing with our own problems and our own families.

Goncalo Amaral interview
Q – They [McCanns] have appeared in all the media to announce the disappearance of their daughter and if it ends up that they have done it, what are they, psychopaths?
A – No, they are human. If the McCanns admit that their daughter is dead, they can no longer collect money from the Maddie fund, and that's a lot of money, over one million pounds. That's why they say that the girl was abducted.
