[size=35]Madeleine McCann: 'If the parents had been black and from a council estate, they might have been charged with neglect'

Mark Lewis spoke to Julia Hartley-Brewer on the ten-year anniversary of the disappearance

Had Madeleine McCann's been black people from a council estate, the fallout of the story would have been completely different.
That's according to media lawyer Mark Lewis, who said the parents might have been charged with child neglect had they come from a less privileged background.
Lewis was talking to [size=14]Julia Hartley-Brewer on the 10th anniversity of Madeleine's disappearance. Her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, are still campaigning for her safe return.

Lewis said: “There is a lot of injustice. Clearly, had it been unemployed, black single parent living in a council estate, I suspect they might have been charged with child neglect.
"This is the story of a white, middle-class, professional family and the then-prime minister committed a large sum of money to the search. There is a huge inconsistency."
However Lewis also decried the huge amount of abuse faced by Madeleine's parents over the years. He said that while people are entitled to freedom of expression, "posting pictures of them out and about" and "setting the dogs on them" went way too far.

Well yes, he's right but doing them for "child neglect" would solve what exactly?  You would have parents convicted of neglect and still the glaringly obvious mystery of a 3 year old child vanishing into thin air.

It wouldn't solve anything & it wouldn't be intended to solve anything.

It would be intended to send a strong message that child neglect won't be tolerated.

But, at the same time, wouldn't it also send a strong message that 'hiding a corpse, 'staging and abduction', 'financial fraud' and 'perverting the course of justice', would instead be tolerated?

IMO stirring the pot by bringing colour into it is unnessary. Just being poor and working class is enough.

Being born to the bottom of the pile. Makes no difference black white Jewish, Asian etc etc.
