I've just had a terrible 'thought', and am embarrassed to even say this, but having witnessed the most 'inept investigation', ~~cover up~~ EVER, imo, could/would the Met, here goes, take 'a bag of childs bones' to PDL and after a quick 'dig' announce 'hey, look what we've found'?

All this talk of 'death' in the last few days, pushed by Madeleine's own parents, mainly, is NOT coincidental, imo.

A 'discovery' like that would be hugely expedient and 'convenient' wouldn't it?

Investigation closed.

Nah, not even the Met would swoop that low, would they?

On a 'lighter' note, or not, maybe D Cameron has eyed a UK 'export' drive 'opportunity' and can flog a few JCB's to the Portuguese, from the JCB factory he was 'praising and promoting' last week, to clear up all the bullshit his Met Police force has spread on the beautiful, family friendly, Algarve recently.

Something has changed, that is for sure. Up until today, for a tabloid to even hint at the possibility that Maddie is dead was unthinkable - borderline libel. And for anyone to start 'digging' is as big a bit of news as there has been in the past 5 years. This won't be a random "let's have a dig and see if we find anything". They are looking for something specific - probably a body.

The HUGE question is what led them to start digging?. And where will they do it? “They don’t believe police are acting on any new tip off," says the Source. Hmm.

I don't buy that it is SY leading the dig - if they can't even interview someone in Portugal without an ILR, they certainly can't roll up with a digging crew and start tunnelling on the beach. That part reads like a desperate attempt to spin this devastating news for the McCanns. If the PJ are leading the dig, and they are confident, they might let SY join in or bring some hi-tech equipment (I hope not though).

Will they find something? Or will the scans come up blank like the MH370 search? Time will tell.

(Of course - in the worst case scenario that they do find evidence of poor Maddie's death, then SY and the UK media have carefully painted a background picture of serial sex-offender 'smellyman' who will instantly become public enemy number 1.)

Maybe the Met's 'forum' WAS the RIGHT place for bringing those 'few things' (plural) up.

Mr & Mrs were permitted to give the Leicestershire Officers questions which they would like put to their tapas friends. The question you have quoted is one of them, and this question was put to, if not all of those friends questioned, at least some of them.

The question in itself, extraordinary, Payne's reply, to say when being interviewed by police regarding a case of a missing child, that it was not the proper forum to reply in full, more extraordinary. Payne would surely have known, as all of the tapas friends would have, before questioning by Leicestershire Police, which questions Mr & Mrs were going to have the police ask of them. That Mr & Mrs were allowed to have police ask questions on their behalf, to me seems astonishing, but maybe this is the norm in such cases.

I didn't take from his reply that he was about to spill the beans, more that he wanted to really let rip about the PJ and any other matter (possibly Gaspar statements) which had him hot under the collar. I think he did not want certain things on record, on tape or other. I think Payne had a few things to say, not necessarily pertinent to establishing the material truth.

The following quote caught my eye: Last week, police moved in to search the churchyard and there has been some suggestion that they may consider digging for Madeleine's body at the location.

(The 'last week' referred to is back in 2007, but I don't think any digging was ever done.)

So where's all this nonsense coming from? "A source close to the McCann’s" I take to mean Clarence Mitchell but later in the article it says "The McCann’s official spokesperson Clarence Mitchell last night refused to comment".

"A source close to the Prime Minister" usually means the PM himself so maybe the McCann's are coming out with it. The question is why, and the answer to that is about 3/4 of the way through the article: "The latest news is a sign Portuguese detectives could be willing to grant full access to files and evidence their British counterparts on Operation Grange have been requesting for months." They're getting really desperate to know what the PJ are doing but I can't see this latest attempt to find out working

I have wondered whether SY, and by extension the Mcs, have been left so far out of the loop that a dig by the PJ has already taken place. The libel trial delay and GA's CMTV interview fit with this. Then there's the non-appearance of the Mcs in PdL for the church service.

The pair of them exude a loss of control over proceedings IMO especially in the round of recent interviews. Fiona Bruce and to some extent Kelly were perfunctory and I sensed little warmth from either towards them.

There are two recurring images in my mind this morning. The first is of KH and GM sitting on that high rock like kings of the castle watching the progress of the searches. The other is of GM and MW looking for something amongst beach rocks with GM on his mobile.

Sounds like a story to shift papers on a Bank Holiday Monday.

In the last few days we read stories as to Mrs. being distraught because the two police forces weren't working together. Now, suddenly, there is going to be a dig around the resort.

If that is the case then the two forces must be working together. SY would not be able to go over and start digging without permission.

It could possibly be that the Pt. police are thinking of digging and SY being present, but there is no way SY would be able to do it on their own.

Clarence Mitchell with nothing to say, I can't believe that either. big grin

This is a different kind of development from the usual suspect spin cycle, IMO. The Mcs themselves seem to be behind it. The hairdo has probably given info off the record as a "source close to..." and on the record "We are not going to comment..." Not an unusual way of doing things at all when deniability is sought.

If the info IS true, then the police must be acting on some kind of very specific info. As others have pointed out you don't just rumble into a foreign tourist resort in high season and begin JCBing their beach. One presumes there are protocols to be followed which would require some credible basis for the action to be justified. What would that info be, what gives it credibility and who supplied it?

Also, if true, why would the Mcs have leaked it? To show they are in control of events? To prove they are hand in glove with SY and share key details and strategy? If the info had leaked in advance of them commenting, how might they be damaged? Would they be seen to be out of the loop and, since the implication is that their child is dead, they might be concerned that this might be a threat to their claims of innocence.

If the info is NOT true, then what do the Mcs gain? Certainly, it emphatically promotes the idea she has died - useful if they're transitioning to "shut down" mode - but, telling such an easily provable whopper greatly risks their "credibility". Could it be to force SY to confirm or deny some info that has reached them unofficially? That would be tremendously high risk as it would be a direct provocation to the Yard and confirmation that a state of war (not cooperation) exists between them. Perhaps both SY and the Mcs are "fishing" to see how the Portuguese respond again on the basis that rumours about a dig have reached them? Unlikely, as the risk to SY is that this would confirm to the PJ they are not on the same side as them despite their protestations to the contrary. Are SY planting a false story to see how fast the Mcs leak? Unlikely, as they know they do already unless it is to track down the source of a specific mole from among their own ranks. i.e. plant ridiculous stories among their men and see which one reaches the target.

If it's not the last, then I'm going with the story has a basis in truth and the Mcs are preempting the news coming out in some other way.

Why now, 7 years on, right at the start of the holiday season in an already struggling PdL? And needle in a haystack type of search, where to start? Imo, if there is any truth at all about this it is the Portuguese Police who are doing the digging and the areas will be very specific.

If there is any grain or scintilla, or particle, iota, jot, whit, atom, speck, bit, trace, ounce, shred, crumb, fragment, grain, drop, spot, modicum, hint, touch, suggestion, whisper, suspicion; smidgen, or tad of truth in this story - at all - you must be right. In which case they may have latched on to something we discussed some time ago.
And it may be that one of the Tapas or others has given them a clue.
Grange have had the information all the time, and have more recently been sent the analysis, just in case HOLMES II or ANACAPA did not bring it to the surface.

I agree RD. Some have commented on KH's scruffy appearance at the war memorial. Very telling I thought. She was nervous in the preceding interviews too.

I think the PJ are firmly in charge and I sense SY forced into playing catch up. I think someone has sung and material evidence culled. I believe they would be immediately arguido-ed if appearing on Portuguese soil. Maybe there was a change of plan for the third due to this. My opinion only.

Could it possibly be that SY are interested in digging up the area of ground outside apartment 5A where Eddie signalled? Not sure what they would expect to find there, but it might suggest that dogs are finally and perhaps reluctantly back in the picture?
