So, finally, Gerry and Kate McCann have said what they've felt for a long time: that police in Portugal and here have given up the hunt for Madeleine.
They described it as "incredibly frustrating" and would likely use stronger language, though they can't afford to completely alienate the cops who have worked on the case so far.
Scotland Yard offered its help in the first few days of Madeleine's disappearance, but the Portuguese authorities turned it down.
Would that have made a difference?
Interesting analogy from GP Kate McCann, that in medicine if you don't find the answer to a problem you continue to go back to square one and re-investigate.
Sadly, you can't do that easily in crime where forensic opportunities need to be seized straightaway.
Cops always say that allegiences and loyalties change in time and someone who knows what happened may offer best hope of solving the mystery of Madeleine's disappearance.
One day.
