Make that a large one!
MADELEINE McCann’s twin siblings turn 18 today nearly sixteen years after their big sister vanished.
Sean and Amelie will be celebrating their milestone birthdays whilst still not knowing the fate of Maddie, who police fear is dead.
The pair have kept out the public spotlight over the years on the wishes of their parents Kate and Gerry McCann.
A ban of media photographing the siblings of the world's most talked about missing child has been in place to protect their privacy until their joint 18th birthdays.
Only pictures of Maddie's sister and brother as toddlers have been allowed to be published before a court order - which is set to expire today - was put in place.
Sean and Amelie were aged just two and a quarter when Maddie - 21 months their senior - vanished from an apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal in May 2007.
The three-year-old - nine days short of her fourth birthday - was snatched at night from her bed in a room she was sharing with the twins who were sleeping in travel cots.
They had appeared to be undisturbed by the kidnap.
As the family from Rothley, Leicestershire, face the poignant 16th anniversary of Maddie going missing in three months, they still cling onto a glimmer of hope she could still be alive.
The twins have spend most of their lives without evening knowing their elder sister who “adored” them.
Renowned heart specialist Gerry and Kate, a former GP turned medical worker with dementia sufferers, both 54, have recently vowed to “never forget” nor “give up” on their daughter.
They posted on the Find Madeleine Campaign Facebook page in early January: "Christmas and other celebratory events will never be the same with our family incomplete, but we continue to make the best of our situation whilst never forgetting or giving up.”
They add: “We head into the New Year with continued determination and positivity.”
If still alive Maddie would be aged 19, and 20 in mid May.
Convicted German sex offender Christian B was sensationally named as a key suspect in June 2020.
Reports suggest German Police, working with British detectives, are expected to finally grill and possibly bring kidnap and “no body” murder charges against him over the coming months.
The paedophile, 45, was charged last autumn with five unrelated sex attacks, two on children, while he languishes behind bars for the rape of an American tourist in the same Algarve resort Maddie was taken from.
He has repeatedly protested his innocence, vehemently denying any involvement in Maddie’s abduction.
Sean and Amelie, who are in their final year at a Catholic School in Loughborough, Leics, Maddie had been due to be a pupil at, are both aspiring athletes, excelling in county standard swimming and cross country running and also competing in triathlons.
When they were youngsters the twins were the “best of friends,” their mum recalled in her personal memoir “Madeleine.”
They were born on the afternoon of February 01, 2005, with Kate stating in her 2011 book: “Suddenly we were a family of five. How lucky we felt.”
She told how her "heart was ready to explode” at the “excitement” Maddie displayed at seeing the twins for the first time.
'NEVER GIVE UP'
Re-living the magic moment Kate said: “Gerry brought Madeleine in to meet her little brother and sister.
When she saw Sean and Amelie her eyes lit up, her mouth opened wide in astonishment and wonder and she lifted her arms in the air.
“My heart was ready to explode at her excitement.”
Kate wrote: “After inspecting her two new prospective playmates she joined me on my bed. It was such a special moment, one of my fondest memories of Madeleine.”
The twins are expected to celebrate their big day with friends and close family - and remembering Maddie too.
A McCann friend said: “Their only wish is for their big sister to come home. There will be prayers for Madeleine as well wherever she is."
Kate and Gerry will mark the double special birthdays in “as normal way as possible” for the sake of the twins.
Kate has previously told how the family often pray for Maddie’s safe return and always remember her on key occasions.
She said her twins have “grown up essentially without Madeleine but knowing their sister is missing and they want her back.”
Speaking in her ambassador role for charity Missing People she has said: “They have their own friends and they keep busy and they’re really sporty but their only wish is for their big sister to come home. We miss our complete family of five.
“As a family 98 per cent of the time we’re busy. I don’t know if that’s a conscious thing but it helps.
"The urge to look for Madeleine absolutely hasn’t changed at all.”

That ^^^ is tantamount to child abuse!
By rights the twins would barely remember their big sister, being so young when she was 'snatched'.
If the twins are carrying a heavy weight through their lives, it is the fault of the parents for filling their heads with unrealistic nonsense.
So, the Ward of Court protection is no longer in place - I think this is finally the end of the protracted drama.
Even if Madeleine is alive and findable, do they truly think she will walk through the door with open arms.
No chance!
It's not that simple.

" Only pictures of Maddies sister and brother as toddlers have been allowed to be published " !
Plenty of those around at the beginning , Kate and Gerry laughing and enjoying themselves with the twins whilst their big sister was " abducted by paedophiles " with no evidence of her coming to any harm " .
Obviously not bothered about any " harm " coming to the twins while they posed for photos for the press !
As they are now adults no longer can the " responsible parents " use them for their own publicity .
Happy birthday Sean and Amelie , I hope you can go on to lead peaceful productive lives without words being put into your mouths about the sister you will not remember apart from what you have been spoon fed for the past 16 years . I wish you nothing but happiness .

You would have thought that being a close family friend, 'our Trace' would have known that nobody ever called her Maddie according to GM (apart from on his old Friends Reunited account if I remember rightly)!

Yes, Gerry himself called her Maddie

There was/is no shortage of Madeleine images is there?
If she is alive and findable surely her privacy should be respected and honoured.
The Olive Oyl latest EXCLUSIVE The Sun continues to publish the same old images of MADELEINE and her parents gerry and kate. I didn't bother to follow suit by uploading again here on CMOMM.

The twins are old enough to access the internet and find out for themselves what nonsense they have been fed for the whole of their lives so far

They will discover that, despite the possibility of their having been drugged on the night Madeleine 'disappeared', their parents didn't bother to find out if this was the case.

There is no hope of peace for the twins - ever!
Their entire childhood and teenage has been overshadowed by the tragedy, so effectively the parents McCann have wrecked the lives of their entire family.
You could almost think the parents are using their children to their own ends.

Missing Madeleine McCann's twin brother and sister turn 18 today - sixteen years after toddler vanished during family holiday at Portuguese resort
Sean and Amelie McCann were just two when Madeleine disappeared in 2007

Madeleine McCann's twin brother and sister celebrated their 18th birthdays today - sixteen years after her disappearance.
Sean and Amelie McCann were in the same room as their sister, then three, when she vanished from an apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007.
Born on February 1, 2005, the twins - who were just two and a quarter at the time - have today turned 18 and reached adulthood.
Maddie disappeared from her bed in the holiday villa while her parents Gerry and Kate, from Rothley in Leicestershire, were having dinner with friends at a nearby tapas restaurant just 55 metres away.
Kate checked the children at 10pm to find Maddie had disappeared but the twins were still sleeping soundly in their cots.
Their older sister would be aged 19 if she is still alive - turning 20 in May - as it approaches the sixteenth anniversary of her disappearance.
In 2020, 45-year-old paedophile Christian Brueckner was named the prime suspect over Madeleine's disappearance by authorities in Germany, where Brueckner is imprisoned.
He denies any involvement in the McCann's missing daughter, who is feared dead by police.
Reports in December suggested that German police could charge Brueckner in the New Year.
Sean and Amelie have been kept out of the spotlight during the high-profile investigation into Maddie's disappearance, The Sun reported.
The twins are in their final year in the sixth form at a Catholic school in Loughborough, which held a place for Maddie if she was ever found during her would-be school years.
They are reportedly aspiring athletes, taking part in swimming championships, triathlons and cross country racing.
Kate McCann's memoir 'Madeleine' offers insight into family life before and after the disappearance of the family's eldest daughter.
She wrote of the twins' birth: 'Suddenly we were a family of five. How lucky we felt.'
She also described Maddie's reaction to seeing her younger siblings for the first time, saying her eyes 'lit up' and her mouth 'opened wide in astonishment'.
She added: 'It was such a special moment, one of my fondest memories of Madeleine.'
Earlier this month, Gerry and Kate McCann, 54, said they would never forget Maddie or give up in a Facebook post.
They said: 'Christmas and other celebratory events will never be the same with our family incomplete, but we continue to make the best of our situation whilst never forgetting or giving up.
'We head into the New Year with continued determination and positivity.'
Last year her parents quoted a poignant line from A.A.Milne's Winne-the-Pooh for the fifteenth anniversary of her disappearance.
They wrote on Facebook: 'But the most important thing is, even if we are apart, I'll always be with you.
'This year we mark fifteen years since we last saw Madeleine. It feels no harder than any other but no easier either. It's a very long time.
'Many people talk about the need for 'closure'. It's always felt a strange term. Regardless of outcome, Madeleine will always be our daughter and a truly horrific crime has been committed. These things will remain.'

Exactly!
How could they possibly know "a truly horrific crime has been committed" if they don't know what happened to Madeleine - and think she is alive, unharmed and findable?
Least said soonest mended.

They got a taste of fame, though, and being feted wherever they went. They couldn't turn down a sofa appearance on the box, or a radio interview.

Re: MADDIE AGONY Heartbreak for Maddie McCann’s family as her younger twin siblings turn 18 today without missing sister being found
I believe the twins are probably suffering with more than a little bit of Stockholm Syndrome. They've had 16 years of mummy and daddy's rhetoric, dogma, control, authority, manipulation, (please add any other adjective you deem appropriate) from a very young and impressionable age, I'm sure they believe what they have been programmed to believe by Mr and Mrs. I notice Amelie was wheeled out for Madeline's birthday remembrance (as Amelie is now 18) but Sean seems to be a little more camera shy or have I missed his appearances?
I just feel desperately sad that their big sister is still not treated with the respect and love she deserved in her lifetime and that is still OWED to her after her being "whooshed" from their family in 2007.
I always hoped that the twins' would let something slip or question their parents account but by Amelie's appearance it seems she at least is following the McCann party line. We can but hope.
P.W.

In fairness, the reason for Amelie's appearance at the remembrance service is unknown but the press again ramped it up to be a big deal with claims such as .... 'Maddie's little sister speaks for the first time'
Hardly ground breaking is it.
At least the McCann family have managed to keep themselves to themselves and respect the privacy of Madeleine's siblings over the years - pity the media and press can't oblige.
Unless either twin dares to speak out in public, there is no way of knowing how the tragedy has affected them in the long term. Alas, whatever their inner thoughts, the stigma will always be there to haunt them.
I hope for their sake they are able to lead a relatively trouble free life and continue towards happiness and contentment - it's not their fault they were born into such a tragedy.
