EXCLUSIVE: Kate and Gerry cling onto a glimmer of hope that Maddie, who would now be aged 17, could still be alive as they refuse to believe she is dead without her body being found

Madeleine McCann’s parents are ‘hoping for a miracle’ and still believe their daughter could be found alive as police continue to investigate a prime suspect over her disappearance.

Kate and Gerry say on the official Find Maddie Campaign page they remain hopeful as they thank supporters for their ‘love and support’ during the most gruelling past few months as sickening details have come to light of convicted sex offender Christian Brueckner who is feared to been involved in Maddie's disappearance.

The tormented couple have maintained a dignified silence turning down media requests from around the world to be interviewed on the latest shocking developments.

They cling onto a glimmer of hope that Maddie, who would now be aged 17, could still be alive as they refuse to believe she is dead without her body being located.

In the first uplifting Facebook post for weeks, the digital co-ordinator, a close pal of the McCann’s who informs thousands of followers on their behalf, states: ‘Never stop believing in hope because miracles happen every day.’

The friend, who remains anonymous, adds: ‘I know it’s been a while since I posted. Just wanted to thank everyone who continue to keep Madeleine and her family in your hearts. We still believe in miracles and hope you do too. We are grateful for your love and support.’

Among wellwishers’ remarks, Jo Davies writes: ‘Hoping Madeleine is found alive and safe.’ Madeleine McAveney adds: ‘I think of her every day. Never forgotten and still praying for her to be back in her parents’ loving embrace.’

Brave Kate and Gerry, both 52, of Rothley, Leicestershire, have endured ‘a tough summer’ as ‘horrendous claims' about their daughter’s suspected kidnapper have surfaced, a pal said.

The source said: ‘They have heard a mixed bag from different police forces, it's absurd. She is dead but there is no body, she could still be alive, the suspect has abducted her and murdered her but his lawyer says he is innocent and will never be charged.

"They don’t know what to believe but they have faith in the British Police who have been on this inquiry for nine years.

’Their emotions are like a yoyo. It’s yet another agonising waiting game. They have had their hopes raised then dashed so many times over the past two months they have no idea what to think.'

The exasperated couple have been told by three nations’ forces in the UK, Germany and Portugal that Maddie could still be alive, that she is definitely dead and that detectives know who her abductor is but don’t have enough evidence to charge him or even quiz him.

Three-year-old Maddie vanished from a holiday apartment in Portugal’s Praia da Luz in May 2007. She had been left sleeping alone with her younger twin siblings while her parents were dining in a nearby tapas restaurant with pals.

Former GP turned medical worker Kate and eminent heart doctor Gerry have been busy preparing their 15-year-old twins Sean and Amelie for their return to school this week after the months-long coronavirus lockdown.

Their pal said: ‘On top of all the latest police searches and claims being made, Madeleine’s parents have their working and family lives to be getting on with.

'It's been a very long tough summer and their focus is on the twins, as well as Madeleine.’

Brueckner, 43, is currently behind bars in Germany for drugs offences and raping an elderly American tourist - the latter offence he is appealing against.

It emerged this week he has been found with a secret stash of hundreds of sickening child abuse images. He reportedly used a Casio Exilim digital camera to store 391 child porn pictures and 68 videos showing the rape and abuse of young boys and girls.

His lawyer Friedrich Fülscher insists his client is ‘innocent’, claiming he had nothing to do with Maddie’s abduction and has been subjected to a miscarriage of justice over the rape of a 72-year-old pensioner in the Algarve resort of Luz two years before Maddie disappeared.

Speaking in Germany, he said the police investigations in both cases are 'based on statements of the same dubious witnesses,’ adding: 'I don’t believe anything these witnesses say.'

It comes as a pal of the prolific sex offender said he had broken into hotel rooms and holiday flats in popular Algarve resorts.

Brueckner, identified by German investigators in June, is known to have been living in Luz at the time Maddie vanished and cops have records of his phone's activity in the resort.

At the time Kate and Gerry said in an online post they want ‘truth, justice and the outcome’ of their daughter’s fate in light of a potential new breakthrough.

They shared a brief statement exactly one month after the 13th anniversary of their daughter’s disappearance in May which they observed behind closed doors in Covid lockdown.

They simply said: 'We would like to thank the police forces involved for their continued efforts in the search for Madeleine.

'All we have ever wanted is to find her, uncover the truth and bring those responsible to justice.

"We will never give up hope of finding Madeleine alive but whatever the outcome may be, we need to know as we need to find peace.

'We will be making no further comment regarding the appeal today.

'We would like to thank the general public for their ongoing support and encourage anyone who has information directly related to the appeal to contact the police.'

I've been wondering when Ms Oyl would come up with the pièce de résistance.  If this isn't cast iron proof that team McCann are behind this German revelation .... I'll eat my hat!
