Madeleine McCann’s parents are still desperately searching for their missing daughter, but in a twisted turn of events, RadarOnline.com has learned they are facing bankruptcy over a brutal legal battle with the cop who initially investigated their child’s disappearance.
Kate and Gerry McCann sued Goncalo Amaral, the first detective on their daughter’s case after he wrote a book that blamed them for Maddie’s death. He’d wrongly claimed that they killed her in their Portuguese hotel room and covered up the crime.
They won their case and he was ordered to pay them $500,000 but the Portuguese Supreme Court later over-turned their verdict.

They appealed, but a judge dismissed their claims AND ordered the McCanns to pay Amaral’s legal costs.
The Daily Star reported the McCanns could end up paying the fired detective up to six figures, taking the remaining cash from the fund that was set up to help find Maddie, if the trustees agree to the payout.
The McCanns were “disappointed but not surprised,” by the ruling, the paper reported. The family’s spokesperson, Clarence Mitchell, said: “This is just another part of the legal challenge.”

He would not confirm if they were going to the European Court of Human Rights, but a loss could bankrupt the McCanns, as the fund currently has only $900,000 left.

Dr Martin Roberts: "The evidence is that these are the pjyamas Madeleine wore on holiday in Praia da Luz. They were photographed and the photo handed to a press agency, who released it on 8 May, as the search for Madeleine continued. The McCanns held up these same pyjamas at two press conferences on 5 & 7June 2007. How could Madeleine have been abducted?"

The McCann’s have lost their final appeal to silence a former Portuguese police chief who believes they faked Maddie’s abduction.
Kate and Gerry McCann have lost their appeal to invalidate the ruling by Portuguese judges who rejected their libel complaint against Goncalo Amaral.
The Leicestershire couple sued the former policeman, after he wrote a book claiming they were wholly responsible for their daughter’s apparent ‘death,’ the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]reports.

The ex-cop had to pay £360,000 in damages to the couple, for his alleged libellous claims in his book named ‘The Truth of the Lie.’
He managed to overturn the court’s ruling last year, prompting the McCann’s to file an appeal with the Portugal Supreme Court against this.
Senior judges took sides with Amaral though and created a 76-page document ruling the McCann’s had not been proved innocent of the alleged crime against Maddie.
So in turn, the McCann’s lawyers created a nine-page complaint against the court ruling, in a bid to invalidate their outcome.
However, Judge Jorge Manuel Roque Nogueira has dismissed the complaint, which claims Portuguese judges were acting ‘frivolously’ against the McCanns, after Amaral overturned the court’s ruling.
The McCann’s may still decide to take the case to European courts as an absolute last resort to win their appeal, but it is thought this is unlikely.

The couple are said to be ‘disappointed but not surprised’ by the outcome.
Amaral is now set to sue the couple after winning the intense legal battle for the right to free speech.
The hunt for Maddie continues after she vanished nearly 10 years ago in 2007 from her apartment, while on holiday with her parents.

What if GC or one of his former colleagues were to write another book? Could the McCanns cope with a double legal action?

Re;Bankruptcy
Perhaps they could ask Kevin Haligen,Dave Edgar,Arthur Cowley,Clarence Mitchell and Mr(bankroll Erm)Kennedy to dig deep into their well lined pockets for a whip round, they weren't worried about Mr Goncalo Amaral feeling fear, where they, having his assets seized under a Court Order?

Well the thing is when you take out a legal action against someone and sue them there is always the risk of losing your case. Wouldn't their lawyer have advised them of the risks, and what kind of chance they had in regard to the laws as to their winning or not? Or did they just disregard all those things and decide to go ahead anyway?

I wonder if they were just using delaying tactics to reach the 10 th Anniversary payday still in the role of victims of Gonçalo Amaral, but they weren't able to spin it out as long as they hoped.Joss wrote:Well the thing is when you take out a legal action against someone and sue them there is always the risk of losing your case. Are we expected to feel sorry for them? Whichever way you look at it this couple are responsible for whatever happened to Madeleine.

Re: BANKRUPTCY! "McCanns face financial ruin" - Radar Online, 24.3.2017
The McCanns, with help from those in high places, started a steamroller in motion that could NOT be stopped. I don't blame the McCanns, myself. They went for damage limitation. What was it the Gerry alleged to have said when Madeleine disappeared? Didn't he say " are we finished"? The situation, the McCanns now find themselves in, was mainly brought about by people at the top. And for what reasons? Well, your guess is as good as mine, but I will say, it's not going to end well.

I understood that Dickie Branston and other high fliers were willing to cover any possible future court costs incurred. Could this be put in to motion now to stop any threat of bankruptcy?
