Re: Jeremy Paxman at Leveson
Lisa O'Carroll has just sent us the transcript from court 73 of Jeremy Paxman's claims that the former Daily Mirror editor Piers Morgan told him how to hack into voicemails.
He had been invited to a lunch in September 2002 hosted by the Mirror's former chairman Sir Victor Blank at which Piers Morgan, the then editor of the Sunday Mirror, Ulrika Jonsson, Philip Green and others were present:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
He had been invited to a lunch in September 2002 hosted by the Mirror's former chairman Sir Victor Blank at which Piers Morgan, the then editor of the Sunday Mirror, Ulrika Jonsson, Philip Green and others were present:
Two reasons I remember the lunch. One was that it was so unusual to be invited into such a bestiary. The second of which was that I was really struck by something that Piers Morgan said at the lunch. I was seated, as far as I recall, between him on my left and the editor of the Sunday Mirror on my right, and Ulrika Jonsson was seated opposite, next to or semi-next to, almost next to Philip Green and Victor Blank on her other side I think.Updated at 15:14 BST
And Morgan said, teasing Ulrika, that he knew what had happened in the conversations between her and Sven-Göran Eriksson and he went into this mock-Swedish accent.
Now, I don't know whether he was repeating a conversation that he had heard or he was imagining this conversation. In fact, to be fair to him, I think we should accept both possibilities, because he probably was imagining it. It was a rather bad parody.
I was quite struck by it because I'm rather wet behind the ears in many of these things. I didn't know that that sort of thing went on. Indeed, when he turned to me and said: "Have you got a mobile phone?" I said yes, and he said: "Have you got a security setting on the message bit of it?" I don't think it was called voicemail in those days. I didn't know what he was talking about. He then explained that the way to get access to people's messages was was go to the factory default setting and press either 0000 or 1234 and that if you didn't put on your own code… his words: "You're a fool."
I don't know whether he was making this up, making up the conversation, but it was clearly something that he was familiar with and I wasn't. I didn't know. I didn't know that this went on.

I always knew I liked Jeremy Paxman!
Do you remember when Paxman interviewed gerry mccann. Paxman just came across that he didn't believe a single word of the mccanns and was just doing his job by asking the questions, nothing more and nothing less

Who is the person who lent his airplane to Kate and Gerry, was it also a Philip Green. Can't find the reference anywhere, but does anyone know if this is so.

Yes, it was Phillip Green, he lent it to them to visit the Pope. Don't know if he has one now though he lost a quarter of his fortune..................
Topshop mogul Sir Philip Green and his wife have lost almost a quarter of their personal fortune over the past 12 months.
The couple - who recently spent an estimated £6 million on a celebrity-studded beach party to celebrate Sir Philip's 60th birthday - are today worth £3.3 billion, down from £4.2 billion, the Daily Telegraph reports

poor loves, if they run out of money they can come to my place and have eggs on toast.
If they lose even more money they will fall into the tax free bracket and won't be able to make an honest contribution to society....hang on a minute, they don't do that already.... mother! cancel that eggs on toast offer.

But he was still very, very rich when he lent his plane to the McCanns to goto Marocco. The McCanns knew that of course - no wonder Kate complained about being fobbed off with an old and uncomfortable one - she must have expected one with a lounge, bar and big sofas. Instead it was more Easyjet.

So Paxman has more power than Morgan !
Why ?
Because he told the truth, and that is always more powerful than the alternative.

Re: Jeremy Paxman at Leveson
I'm accumulating a list of the men from mainstream media and politics that I would welcome to my table for a light supper of eggs on toast (sorry I don't do bestiaries but the eggs are from my totally free range, organic hens).
1. Lord Leveson, who to my mind is happily capable of seeing it and saying it as it really is.
2. Mr. Jay QC, who equally, can penetrate the turgid waters of lies and deceit.
3. Jeremy Paxman who has retained a naivety, and is nobody's fool and has the courage to speak out.
And then there are the whistle blowers. Tom Watson for a start.
It's not bad is it, out of a population of some 60,000,000 in the UK, and about 30,000,000 of those being male, to be able to find 4 straight men. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Yes, they're pure and simple aren't they. Often that's the best way.

Incidentally Jay is extremely successful, and very very bright, Scholar to New College, then a First, only 19 years from call to Silk, but as a QC he bats for both sides. Which is another way of saying he can not only penetrate the turgid waters of lies and deceit, but can also stir them up when paid to do so !

I think so, based on what I have seen so far.
I don't for one minute think he can see so thoroughly, through all the other miscreants, but cannot see through the McCanns.
It's a waiting game. You don't announce to your suspects that the police are going to do a surprise dawn raid tomorrow, at 05.00, on the dot, if you are still mustering the forces and getting everything correctly into place. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Morgan has previous for being 'economical with the truth" over the City Slickers and Viglen shares.
So far as I know Paxman is without stain, and above suspicion.
Truth is a lovely thing.
