A British man whose family contacted police after suspecting he was involved in Madeleine McCann’s disappearance was never fully investigated, the Standard can reveal today.
The expat, who was living in the Algarve at the time the child vanished, was put forward as a suspect by his brother but detectives failed to rule him out of the inquiry.
Today, on the fifth anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance, the lawyer for her parents Kate and Gerry said she hoped the “crucial lead” will be investigated by Scotland Yard, which has launched a review of the case.
The man, who is named in police files but cannot be identified for legal reasons, was allegedly desperate to have a child but he and his then partner were unable to conceive.
His brother informed British officers the suspect told him and other members of his family that if he could not have a child he would kidnap one. The information was apparently passed on to the Portuguese authorities but the McCanns’ lawyer Isabel Duarte said he was never “properly investigated” nor eliminated from the inquiry.
The suspect — who lived in Espiche near Praia da Luz, where Madeleine vanished on May 3, 2007 — also had a boat in the marina at nearby Lagos.
Ms Duarte said the lead was all the more significant because of reports of a girl “remarkably like Madeleine” being dragged along a road leading to Lagos marina at 6am on May 4.
It was also revealed today that during efforts to track down a “significant number” of sex offenders, attempts to contact several of them were not successful and never followed up.
Ms Duarte added that police have never interviewed 28 employees of the Ocean Club, from where Madeleine disappeared at the age of three.
Church services to mark the anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance will be held tonight in Praia da Luz and in the McCanns’ home town of Rothley, Leicestershire

Oh FFS!!
Andy Redwood might as well open a new facebook page and churn out the stuff as and when. How irresponsible not to mention nauseating.
I bet its another lead ruled out in the initial investigation.
Nice of the reporter to end the article with they are attending mass.

It just makes the press look really stupid. Not to mention the govt and police. The public will be rolling their eyes unleas anything concrete comes out of it. Never has and never will until the real stories are told.

If it wasn't so serious it would all be so remarkably amusing.

Re: Madeleine McCann suspect was never ruled out of inquiry by police
The ancient art of misdirection seems a little desperate.
A man desperate for a child will grab (once again Maddie whilst Amelie would be preferred stock) a child a few miles from his house, meaning to pass her off as his own? In Portugal? Where they actually talk to children and take an interest?
As Himself said (only in america blog) the truth is always simple.Saddam signed his own death warrant when he agreed to accept Euros instead of oil dollars. The US wanted to control the oil in the Middle East. They threw him out, called it democracy and are sitting on 70% of the oil in Iraq. Simple.
Just an example of politicians and media helping the thing along. Tony Blair is on record as saying that if he hadn't used the WMD threat, he would have had to think of another excuse to invade Iraq.
What's different with the McCanns is that these endless red herrings are keeping the media in money and the politicians supplied with useful headlines.

the truth is simple and what happened to Maddie is probably staring us in the face . Whoever solves this will probably hit him/herself on the head , swear and ask why the hell did I not see this sooner?

RD you are probably correct, you have been on and reading this forum a lot longer than me , I suppose I am still at the reading everything stage and I keep going off in tangents and getting quite lost at times ! However I do agree that it is the small details that are going to bring this together , slightly off topic I posted on "MAdeline could this really be you "? may I ask you to have alook at my post about the dimple on MMC face and the pictures on that post please TY

The dimple on the left cheek? It is great you noticed that.........it is there on all the age- progressed photos I think, I am now going back and slowly looking at all the other earlier photos. I had not noticed the dimple before, and there is one photo of Maddie with crimped hair that has been debated .. is it her.......I always thought so and now am convinced. So a big thanks for highlighting the dimple.
It is researching the detail and cross-referencing which ties us up in knots and takes us positively down some roads until we hit a dead end. I believe the truth is in the book. And in the files of course, a needle in the proverbial haystack.
