Madeleine: Police Review Phone Calls

Police are checking phone calls made to Crimestoppers after Madeleine McCann's disappearance, according to Sky sources.

Around 100 phonecalls to the charity that were logged in the first few months after Madeline's disappearance will be reviewed.

These messages were initially dismissed because the information came from people who said they were psychics or had dreamt about the case.

Scotland Yard will now check the information for the first time, and enter it into their computer databases.

Sky News crime correspondent Martin Brunt said detectives do not believe this information should be overlooked.

“It’s probably unlikely to be of value but it should be put into system and sometimes it will connect or corroborate information that’s already there,” Brunt said.

Today marks the fifth anniversary since Madeleine went missing from an apartment in the Algarve region of Portugal.

On Wednesday, Madeleine’s parents told Sky News they were more hopeful than they had ever been that their daughter will be found alive.

Kate and Gerry McCann also said they were confident the abandoned police investigation would be reopened by the Portuguese authorities soon.

Police have released an age-progressed image of how Madeleine could look today, aged nine.

A statement issued with the photo said: "As a result of evidence uncovered during the review they now believe there is a possibility Madeleine is still alive and are appealing for anyone who is able to provide direct information as to her whereabouts to contact the team."

The three-year-old disappeared just days before her birthday from the family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz. She has never been found.

So these are the "new leads the alluded to yesterday, the 100 or so Crimestoppers logs. According to Martin Brunt, when the phone no. for Crimestoppers was given out around 600 or so calls came in. They then started passing them to Leicestershire Police. But there were so many and they were inundated, that Leics Police, told crimestoppers, not to pass on anything that came from psychics or dreamers etc. These are the NEW leads, they are looking into.

Good thing Kate rattled off the phone number so quickly in the press conference yesterday that it needed a psychic to retrieve it. Otherwise there would have been many more people with dreams - by the way. Why do they need more of this type of sighting and information?
Clarrie is on record and possibly on video saying that they still have 500 plus psychic leads to follow - soon after that he was gone. Spooky or not?

Crimestoppers Trust is the UK charity that operates the 0800 555 111 hotline that can be used to pass on information about crime anonymously.

If taxi man, and these 100 psychic calls are the important new leads, no wonder the Attorney General branded them as hypothosis and speculation.

Potential new clues in the Madeleine McCann case have been passed to British detectives on the fifth anniversary of her disappearance.

Logs of around 100 pieces of information sent to Crimestoppers have emerged that were never sent to investigators in Portugal or the UK.

The logs contain details supplied by psychics and others who claimed to have dreamed what happened to Madeleine.


For so long we felt we were searching for Madeleine on our own, but that's not the case now

The information was sent to a special Crimestoppers hotline set up a week after Madeleine vanished in May 2007.

For several months all of it was passed to Leicestershire Police, the McCanns' home force, who were investigating UK angles.

But sources say the force was so inundated with information it asked Crimestoppers to stop sending details supplied by psychics and dreamers.

Now it has been discovered the logs were never sent to any of the investigation teams.

A source said the material may prove of no value at all, but it was important it was at least looked at.

"Psychic stuff is often very precise and is therefore easily eliminated, if nothing else," the source said.

"But sometimes it can corroborate more tangible information already in the system."

Another source said sometimes witnesses claim to have learned details through psychic powers just to distance themselves from what they know.

Scotland Yard said: "We are in close dialogue with Crimestoppers to ensure that all material in their possession - from any source - is shared with us."

With you 100% here. There is a lot more at stake than appears on the surface.

The people telling us lies know they are doing so. But these lies now seem to be turning into fairy-tales which shows a contempt for the population as a whole and indifference to the fate of a small girl who had as much right to life as you or I.

Do they no longer care if we all know they are lying? Because there's nothing we can do about it?

Just a suggestion as to what may be going on: people can claim to be psychic all they like, doesn't make it true, it just makes potentially relevant to the case. Even psychics have eyes and ears in the conventional sense just like the rest of us. Is it possible that someone with genuine information has already communicated some vital information to the police, but that information has been classified as 'speculative reports' which weren't followed up? I personally don't believe in psychic ability (at least not in supernatural terms) but can think of reasons why someone may claim to have received information 'from the spirits' - you don't have to reveal, or explain, how you know what you claim to know. IIRC many of the psychic 'reports' were not released by the PJ which may be the reason for the fresh appeal. It's also potentially connected with why SY now want the case re-opened. All IMO.

I personally think physics are just people with over-active imaginations that appeal to people's insecurities. When has a physic ever resolved a criminal case purely on their 'visions' alone? For me what solves cases is facts, and in this case & after 5 years there are no facts nor evidence for an abduction, but there are facts & evidence to show the mccanns involvement of death and blood and a cover up

Yes on the night Maddie 'disappeared' on May 3rd 2007, instead of going out searching all the streets they instead made priority to delete messages off their phones!!!

then took out pre printed posters of Maddie on photographic paper which cannot be bought in PDL, giving them out before the police came...Now how quick was this and where did they get this photographic paper from which you cannot buy in PDL?

The usual innocent fat unkempt cleaner who had scraggy hair or smelt or orange grove picker who looked suspect because they had a rag doll in the back of their car or anyone who looked suspect and were followed into market lots earning their daily living and had their dna surreptiously taken by dave edgar, or well, anyone who was just hanging around from six months earlier, waiting for an opportunity to abduct someone from 5a

Whe I saw the topic title I thought the serious police work had finally begun and the police were finally reviewing the phone logs for the McCann's and the tapas 9 ...silly me what was I thinking....

I just don't get it. Surely if you are reviewing what happened you would start with the basics. Ie establish who was there, get them all interviewed and see what they say. Regardless of whether you think they played any part in it or not. It's not rocket science. Then you can look at how that fitted with what was said at the time.

Churning up all these old sightings, taking psychics seriously and asking people to keep their eyes open for a blonde 9 year old is just crazy.

Hi PeterMac, Martin Brunt said they were told by Leicestershire Police not to pass on the crank (my word) leads, ie those from psychics etc., as they were totally inundated. It is on the video somewhere I posted. I saw him say it on Sky.
