Good quality wristbands £2 and holiday packs £1.75. Surely the packs are supposedly to help the McCanns' find their child so why should you need to pay anything?

Trade mark Madeleine

Says he who made Madeleine a trade mark on the 17th May 2007 (application for that must have gone in when? Surely not before 3/5?).What bothered him was the fact that others were profiting from it. IMO Maddie has become the new Diana and can sell any number of newspapers.
I don't actually think they make much money out of the shop, somebody has to order and dispatch stuff. So it seems to work as free advertising for TM. Not that I've seen many people wearing these things.
On their facebook, I don't know if it's gone yet, they are asking students on gap years to go off the beaten track and look for Maddie.
Something should be done about that, because it is inciting young people to take risks in foreign countries which may have serious consequences.

Here is the snipped article as published in the Daily Record on December 23, 2010:
Madeleine McCann’s aunt explains why she has joined charity for missing people.. and how search for little girl goes on
Dec 23 2010 Exclusive by Annie Brown
This week, Patricia became a family representative for the charity Missing People, who help with searches and support those left behind.
She wanted to take on the role to highlight the plight of the many left with a void in their life – the parents, the children, the sisters, the brothers, the uncles and the aunts of the missing.
The organisation are asking the Government to give families of missing people the same rights as victims of crime, access to legal and financial assistance and emotional support.
snipped
Patricia said: “It is so hard to watch Kate and Gerry push themselves constantly. When Madeleine first went missing, family and friends had to step in to help them pay the mortgage.
“Money is constantly tight but they have to keep going. They will never give up looking and that costs money. Families of the missing still need to pay bills while they search but there is no right to any financial help.” unquote

Clarence Mitchell Lies on NZ Radio
On September 20th, 2007, Clarence Mitchell was interviewed on Radio Live in New Zealand.
Hear the interview at this link: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Near the end of the interview Clarence says this:
I’d stress as well that the money that people have donated from around the world is only being spent on that campaign and Kate and Gerry’s legal costs and media management in the shape of me that’s all coming from the financial benefactors who are contributing quite separately so that anybody who has given money to help find Madeleine need have no fear that their money is being spent on lawyers fees or anything like that.
This statement is quite clear. “No money will be spent on lawyer’s fees or anything like that.”
After reviewing the money spent on lawyers in the Madeleine Fund accounts, it is quite obvious that Mitchell’s statement is a bare faced lie.
unquote
And here are some more snippets:
Failing to explain that the ‘Helping to Find Madeleine Fund’ was not a charity
Interviewed by James Whale, Mitchell repeatedly refused to correct Whale when he referred to the McCanns’ fund as a ‘charity’. In fact, the Helping to Find Madeleine Fund is registered as a ‘private trust’; its aims are not charitable and include making payments to the McCanns.
Asking people to send money in envelopes to ‘Gerry and Kate, Rothley’
Asked on the same James Whale show how people could contribute to the fund, Mitchell said: “Just put money into an envelope and send to Kate and Gerry McCann, Rothley, it’ll get there”. That was unprofessional - monies should have been directed to the registered office for the Fund, namely London Solicitors Bates, Wells & Braithwaite. For example, monies sent in the post could be stolen en route or would not be properly accounted for.
Clarrie is a natural, although Justine McGuinness did her best - his lies are so much more amusing.

Report from newspaper SOL
The McCanns public collection
By Margarida Davim
07 July 2007
At the entrance of the Ocean Club in Praia da Luz, the journalists who participated in the press conference, that was held by Madeleine's parents for the Portuguese media, encountered a plastic box to collect donations. A small text, signed by Kate and Gerry McCann, invited everyone who entered the resort to contribute. This gesture was not appreciated by the members of staff, who claimed that the resort "is full of collection boxes".
A fund for Maddie
This box is just one of many ways that Maddie's parents found to collect money for the 'Leaving No Stone Unturned' fund – which counts with almost 900 thousand pounds already (one million three hundred thousand euros).
Justine McGuinness, the McCann's new public relations, guarantees that the collected money "is being managed by a group of independent people", and subject to "very rigorous rules that are imposed by British law to all charities". Still, McGuinness refuses to explain who are the "highly qualified lawyers and managers" that are managing the fund, just highlighting that they are not remunerated, and offered as volunteers.
Unquote.
I posted these separately since it would otherwise get too long and too chaotic. But this one - the boxes with a handwritten note!! inviting contributions....

Ok Tigger, you got me - I am suspicious of the fund too!!!
Is there even any need to have a fund now that Scotland Yard are involved? Maybe this is the time to share it round a bit to benefit other missing people.

Who could fail to be suspicious of their fund. It is promised as having transparency & accountability yet it has neither. They don't even bother to split out "searching" expenditure from all other expenses paid (including "financial assistance" to the McCann wider family).

314. The industry was under economic pressure even before the recession. In the past five years, the circulation of the ten major national daily newspapers has fallen by more than 13 per cent:

I'm quoting Zappa who started this topic - the above link is long but well worth it. The McCanns were a godsend to the media. Now I'm thinking that it would not have been in the media's interest to be anti-McCann - should there be a court case, there would be no news until during and after this had taken place, which could be years.
However, a story that can be milked for years - with sightings an always the iconic photo - it's like printing money!
The media needed an icon that would appeal to the world because since Diana died there simply hadn't been an icon to replace her.(it was proved that a Diana photograph on the front page increased sales dramatically).
Re the Fund - why was it called a 'Fighting Fund?' not a Find Madeleine Fund? Who were they going to fight? Ah, silly me, the sardine munchers!
The publicity was a professional mix of xenophobia, standing up for the underdog, anti the 'upper classes' and a portrayal of people from Celtic and lovable Liverpudlian stock who'd struggled to make the best of themselves.
The marketing of the McCanns was so good that they had to have had expert advice. In advance imo. Because of all the photographs of Maddie, the iconic poster girl is the most appealing. The 'Unique Selling Point' as I see the coloboma was also a masterstroke.
The little girl, with her mascara'd eyelashes, perfect skin, parted lips and baby teeth, her innocent little face - who could not love her?
