New Search in Portugal
«British officers from Scotland Yard will escort as early as next week, Kate and Gerry McCann - the parents of Madeleine, who disappeared from Praia da Luz in April(sic) 2007 - to seek new avenues that lead to determine what happened. The couple will be in Portugal to launch the book 'Madeleine' on Monday.»

If this little snafu of Portugal not having received an official request by that time is not resolved the British officers from Scotland Yard maybe escorted out, or worse to jail, the moment they get of the plane.

Attempted white wash.
I am sure many more people now realise the McCanns have been and continue to be given special treatment.
I believe those who think that SY will be investigating the McCanns are mistaken. This is a big PR exercise which is in essence what a white wash is all about. Remember the Iraq war white wash? The Sun had the exclusive front page and Alistar Campbell pretended to be important in his famous press conference.
Trouble is, a white wash tends to offer only a temporary respite from the questions - just ask Alastair Campbell !

Yes 'attempted white wash' is a better description.... there's always a chance the McCanns will get hit by something out of left field that nobody anticipated. That day will be a great one indeed! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Assuming T. May was correct and the UK Government has been talking to the Portuguese for some time about SY getting involved, wouldn't it be obvious to ask SY if they are willing/able to do it at an early stage?
So many are talking, understandably, about a scam. But ask yourselves if the UK Govt would commit so much money if the expected outcome is a whitewash? Further, would SY - being the Metropolitan Police Service of London - ever be involved in a scam? Of course not - who, individual or other police force, would ever again consider them reliable and trustworthy? Individual police officers could do it, of course, but not the whole organisation.

"neither the Prosecutor General's Office nor the prosecutors that are responsible for the case have received any request or application, neither for cooperation, nor for the reopening of the process".
As long as there is no agreement for the British police to come in Portugal and work on this case I don't think they would even permitted in the country to work, McCann book launch or not. The policeforce of one country can't just go to another country and start their own investigation.
As far as motivation to turn this in a cover up. This is what I posted on another thread. This is IMO the reason why they had such an unprecedented treatment and protection in the first place:
Just think how many influential people will have egg on their faces (a some smelly egg too!) when this couple will be unmasked as the sociopaths they are. Think how many people with loads of money and or connections will have to say "oops, didn't know that".
That's never going to happen. Looking stupid is a death sentence for most important people. They'll do anything to avoid that. They probably already hate this couple as the proverbial pest, but they won't be made fools.
I think that in the beginning of the case Britain already spend that much money on keeping their faces, and the face of middleclass fallen up doctors clean. Do you think the pink one comes cheap? Remember apart from the salary they have to pay hotel, travel food etc. Same for all those LE people there in the beginning when they had permission. Remember how they made their royal tour through Europe and Morocco? Being greeted everywhere by ambassadors. Oh what a schadenfreude the diplomatic community had, but again, it ain't cheap and it was unprecedented. Important people don't want to look stupid and if they can spend someone else's money to avoid that they will.

It will be a team of police officers, headed by one or two individuals surely?
The Home Office went out of its way to thwart the investigation at it's most crucial time by not turning over any of the most basic information request by the PJ re the McCanns credit cards, medical and phone records, etc. Why were these basic requests denied? Then there was what appeared to be a very odd U turn by The Birmingham FSS, and also the Head of MMU quitting his job to work for the dodgy pair 24/7. Jim Gamble then Head of CEOP gave the pair unprecedented support also. Added to that Leicester Police's benign questioning of the tapasniks, even allowing ROB to peruse over JT's statement, and the dodgy linking of LP website to the McCann's website... which of course could interfere with information going to a genuine police force, and ending up in the hands of the McCanns paid (so called) detectives.... I could go on and on.
I can't see the Met having a different goal to the Home Office somehow. I would like to think that this has all changed now but I doubt it. So we come back down to... what parameters will the Met officers be given, and who will be coordinating it?

Re: New Search in Portugal
Should any Met Police officers accompany/escort the McCanns, they will not have any powers as police officers in Portugal. They'll just be suit wearing tourists pandering to the McCanns 'Z' list celebrity delusion.
I do wonder, though, what their official remit would be.

I wonder if the ambassador, oh wait the British mission in Portugal is having some personal problems ain't it?, so charge d'affairs will be used as local escort again, they must love that.
