Madeleine McCann: Police to return to Portugal as search reaches 'make or break' moment

Post by TMH on 22.08.14 22:57

Up to seven officers from Scotland Yard's Operation Grange will hold meetings with senior Portuguese investigators

Search: Kate and Gerry McCann haven't given up hope of finding vanished daughter
British police searching for missing Madeleine McCann are poised to return to Portugal to try to solve the seven-year riddle of the girl’s disappearance.
After weeks of tense negotiations, a team of Scotland Yard detectives will travel to the seaside resort of Praia da Luz next month.
The latest development is described by sources close to the investigation as a “make-or-break moment”.
Up to seven officers from Operation Grange will hold meetings with senior Portuguese investigators.
It is understood they have been granted permission to interview up to seven key suspects identified earlier this year – three of whom will be questioned for a second time.
The last time the Met officers were in Portugal, in May this year, they conducted interviews with four people, known as arguidos.
The Portuguese term – normally translated as “named suspect” or “formal suspect” – refers to someone who is treated by Portuguese police as more than a witness, but has not been arrested or charged.
One of them, Russian-born Sergey Malinka, has been told he is no longer under suspicion.

But now detectives have been given the go-ahead to question the remaining suspects they believe hold vital information that could help them crack the case.
Analysis of mobile phone data suggests at least three of them were close to the scene when three-year-old Madeleine vanished at the resort on May 3, 2007, and were in contact in the hours that followed.
A source said: “Thousands of pieces of evidence have been re-examined by the Scotland Yard team to get to this stage. This is far from a scatter-gun approach.
“The detectives are acutely aware there is a finite amount of money for the investigation and that they need results. It is hoped they are on the right track to achieving those objectives.”
Portuguese authorities are also understood to have granted permission for Yard officers to investigate new “areas of interest”.
In May, a team of detectives led by Det Chief Inspector Andy Redwood travelled to the Algarve to supervise digs on scrubland near the resort.

But after eight days of searches, using sniffer dogs and ground-penetrating radar, nothing was found.
Portuguese sources have described the Met probe, which has so far cost UK taxpayers more than £6million, as a senseless waste of time.
Madeleine’s parents Kate, 46, and Gerry, 45, from Rothley, Leics, are not expected to travel to Portugal but are being kept informed of developments.

Make or Break ?  Hmmm...interesting!

Second interview of 3 of the 7 suspects ?

From phone forensics?

Who might they be?

Does anyone know the times/dates activity from OG has coincided with the libel trial? If this latest jaunt to Portugal is close again to the trial then it ceases to be coincidence. (I think Kate had something to say about coincidences...)

The question is, is it a bad thing or a good thing?

I can't see what on earth the police hope to uncover with another visit to Portugal.

Are we in the final throws of the "investigation"? The budget limit looming close.

No doubt the govt will be reminded next year how they wasted £6M. A lot of good could have been done with that money.

Analysing the testimonies from the McCanns and friends and listening to the conclusions arrived at by the PJ should have been the honest and sensible approach.

Make or break?

Post by Tony Bennett on 22.08.14 23:20

'Make or break'?

IMO: Break.

New publicity conveniently surfacing less than three weeks before the publication on 9/11 (11 September) of Summers and Swan's new book, 'Looking for Madeleine', which will be heavily promoted and says that the McCanns have nothing whatsoever to do with the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

All of this being IMO 'clearing the ground' before Operation Grange make an announcement ahead of the General Election to the effect: "We tried so hard, so very very hard, to find the abductor, but tragically failed in the end"

Thank you, TMH. It's just that it sounds so familiar. For example "Kate and Gerry won't be travelling to Portugal, but will be kept informed" and it states that Kate is 46 and Gerry 45. Aren't the both 46 now?

The wording is similar to one that appeared a while ago and those are archive photos, not new ones. Looks like a regurgitated Clarrie creation to divert attention from the imminent damages hearing or perhaps other "difficult" commentary in the social media and forums.

Yes, it's just the same old, same old generic article. And they won't be travelling to Portugal for this I expect, but you can bet your bottom dollar they'll go when the trial resumes  winkwink

And Summers and Swan KNOW that..............................HOW?

Oh, i know!

The McCann's TOLD them they had nothing to do with, to use their bezzy mate, Rachel Olfield, favourite word............"IT"

PHEW! That's alright then!

At last..........., THE truth, and not just 'AN' account of the 'truth' (exhibit KH1) that K McCann/Healy has given us.

Hang on though,

Didn't the McCanns also TELL their C Ruck lawyer Isabel M that Madeleine 'WAS abducted'?

Which led to total embarrassment, FOR HER, as she blithely 'repeated' that in the High Court without providing a scintilla of 'evidence' whether THAT was TRUE or NOT and had to admit, in the public courtroom, that she was only TOLD by the McCanns that 'Madeleine WAS abducted'!

The key to the article?
"The latest development is described by sources close to the investigation as a “make-or-break moment”."
I remember the days when the investigation first opened. Not a word from SY for months.
Seems since, the SY investigation has starting to crack and leak like a collinder.
Now the rats will be jumping ship, for their big pensions.
Never believe, that those in "public office", particularly SY, have any morals. If they had. They would have investigated the McCanns and the Tapas 7. If only to elimenate them. But they have chosen not to do so, to the best of my knowledge.
A sad endictment of today's society, including those whom are meant to be up-holding the law.

If the detectives are returning to Portugal being latest development I'd say the article is new.
Question is : who leaked it to the papers? English side or Portuguese side?

It didn't take a crystal ball to predict this did it?

So, what is afoot:

Scotland Yard going to Portugal again just before Lisbon Trial.

Lisbon Trial - final session (really?) judgment to be given at a later (unspecified) date - crystal ball required for that.

Summers and Swan 'spectacular book' release 11th September - unfortunately for S&S this will coincide with the judgment on the Oscar Pistorius trial so bad luck for any hopes of a major headline announcement on the day - best get the promo in early - Scotland Yard can assist with their usual fanfare arrival in Portugal and 'a source close to the couple' can contact the media with heartbreaking/heartwarming stories - get all that human interest and sympathy going whilst avoiding any nasty stuff about Lisbon Trial.

The anniversary of 9/11 and current middle east crises dominate the headlines?

Tory Party conference 28th September - in need of something seriously positive - a nice update on breaking the web of deceit/no-one's above the law/whistleblowers count/Operations Fernbridge/Yewtree/Grange all doing nicely will help a tad methinks.

*Note to Clarence: wear something nice, take your hands out of your pockets, stand up straight boy, shoulders back, shoulders back.

Just my opinion of course.

The last time they went they were digging up the village looking for human remains, weren't they ?
I dont remember them having checked schools and nurseries looking for a living child.
I wonder what the detailed forensic examination of the soil samples has revealed ?

Also the Scottish Referendum on September 18th. It will be a busy news-month. But certainly the return of SY at the same time as the resumption of the libel trial speaks volumes - as indeed it has from Day 1.

The same time two years ago it was reported that a decision must be made by the PM (or was it Rebekah Brooks) whether or not to continue funding Operation Grange:

It looks as though they might have an annual end of summer pow wow to decide if it's worth wasting another few million of public money before they admit they haven't got a clue, literally!

Wasn't it this same Bernard Hogan-Howe who very recently declared his commitment to continuing OG no matter what?
