A four-person Metropolitan Police team working on the Madeleine McCann case has been slammed as "languishing" and "struggling to justify its existence" by a former Met detective as the hunt for Maddie enters its 17th year.
Just four British police officers are still investigating Madeleine McCann's 2007 disappearance in Portugal as part of an ongoing Home Office-funded investigation, known has Operation Grange.

Overseas, investigations are still underway - not least in Germany, where rapist Christian Brueckner remains on trial for unrelated offences, but has been identified as a suspect in the McCann case by German authorities
But Peter Bleksley, a former Metropolitan Police detective, has slated the force amid reports that a mere three officers alongside a civilian member of staff are involved in Operation Grange in the UK - and, at that, part-time.
Bleksley told GB News: "The Metropolitan Police are pretty low down the food chain. They've played second fiddle to the Portuguese, and they've since been pushed even further down because the Germans have taken the primary lead... The Met are languishing, while the others are trying to find work to do.

He acknowledged that while Christian Brueckner's committed and alleged crimes did not relate to the UK, the Met were "covering their backs, so that if convictions were made in the UK, they can say: "We did our bit'."
Bleksley said the money being diverted to the four-man force "just about keeps the lights on" and claimed the team itself "just exists to keep Kate and Gerry McCann happy", adding that he understood the public's "frustration" over why said funds weren't going towards solving other crimes.
The Met has previously talked up how it "continues to work with and support" colleagues from police in Portugal - where Maddie vanished - and Germany.
In 2013, the status of the force's inquiries changed to an investigation which, alongside Portuguese authorities, entails pursuing "specific lines of enquiry" - but just two years later, the amount of police working on the case had been scaled back to 29.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson told GB News that the number of staff on Operation Grange always remains under review and is "flexed accordingly to new information coming in, or new lines of enquiry".

I’d love to guarantee them that we would get an answer, sadly investigations can never be 100 per cent successful. But, it’s our job, and I’ve discussed it with them, we’ll do everything we can do, reasonably, to find an answer to what’s happened to Madeleine.

But the real question is why, I could understand him saying what he did if he was talking about a real abduction but the McCann's have never been cleared by the Portuguese, there just isn't enough evidence to charge them.
They have interfered with all aspects of the Portuguese investigation but have never once been suspicious of the McCann's involvement.

Operation Grange is working on the basis that Dr Amaral has the opinion that it was a tragic Accident while the Parents were not there.

As Gerry said 'If Madeleine had fallen and died in the Apartment, how can that be our fault.'

Even if they were in the living room at the time they could have not reacted in time to catch or save her?

But there are other indications that something else happened which were never fully investigated.

The biggest worry I have is something that Mark T Hoffman said.
'Madeleine had to die because she was old enough to talk, she could explain to someone what had happened to her.'

What really happened and when is the Question.

Madeleine could have been killed at home at any time, Staging an abduction whilst on holiday abroad seems far fetched to me.

Anyway, good point, I'm still thinking Madeleine had an accident, but why they hid her body is a mystery, unless it was for those reasons.

I think the original theory, that she had been sedated, is probably the most likely. A drowsy, drugged Madeline wandered about the apartment and fell. It would emerge that Madeleine and the twins were regularly dosed up to make them sleep. Perhaps this is the reason Kate McCann made up the story of Madeleine asking why nobody went to them when she and Sean were crying, to demonstrate that if they had been drugged, how could they have woken. Nobody with an ounce of decency would then go out at night again. Even if Madeleine had said 'Where you?' Kate McCann shouldn't have revealed it. She made her and the professor look worse.

In my humble opinion, if Maddie had an accident - or even if she'd really been abducted - then there's no way on earth the parents would act like this after just a few days
