A private detective accused of duping Madeleine McCann’s family out of £300,000 died after falling at his home, a coroner has ruled.
The home of Kevin Halligen, 56, was said to have been “bloodied” when he was found there on January 8, 2018.
Police at first treated his death as “unexplained” but coroner Richard Travers heard he died from a brain haemorrhage and that detectives found “no suspicious circumstances”.
Despite being a convicted conman, the inquest recorded Mr Halligen as an “intelligence and security officer”.
He ran Oakley International, which received £300,000 of publicly donated cash after Madeleine vanished from Praia da Luz in Portugal aged three in 2007.
Halligen later denied claims the cash was siphoned off to pay for first-class travel, top hotels and a chauffeur.
In 2012, Halligen was extradited from Britain to America, where he admitted conning millions of pounds from a company whose executives had been kidnapped in Africa. He was jailed.
Paramedics called to Mr Halligen’s home in Normandy, Surrey, performed CPR on him but he could not be saved.
A postmortem found he died of an acute subdural haemorrhage.
A pathologist testified at Woking coroner’s court last week that there was “no sign of an assault”.
His death was reported to the coroner under the name of Richard Powell.
Recording a verdict of accidental death, coroner Richard Travers said: “Mr Powell suffered a fall at his home address... and an ambulance was called.
“Despite attempts to save his life Mr Powell died at 05:26 hours that same day.
“Police attended and found no suspicious circumstances and the postmortem examination did not reveal injuries consistent with an assault or third-party involvement.”
Adrian Gatton, a TV director and investigative journalist who had worked with Mr Halligen, previously said he had sunk into alcohol addiction.
He added at the time: “A lot of people wished him ill but his death is almost certainly related to alcoholism.”

May we now assume that BatesWellsBraithwaite, the solicitors for the "Fund" are now going actively to pursue the estate for the full refund of the monies so blatantly and obviously defrauded from it, whilst under their direct control and supervision ?
Perhaps not, since that might open up one of the main questions – which remains . . .
Why did they, BWB, and the sometime accountants HaysMcIntyre not NOTICE the fraud?
Why did neither company apparently conduct "Due Diligence' before entering the contract with him, nor with Metodo3, nor for that matter with the pigeon fancier with a company – registered some time after the contract was signed – in a pigeon-loft half way up the hill in Wales.
There are some who suggest that this looks like a huge money laundering scam.
Ludicrous. Obviously.
It is clearlyprofessional incompetence Oh sorry, I can't say that either can I
It is clearly, err, umm, something else I can't put my finger on at the moment.

Why do the Mirror have to lie and say ‘last week’?
30th March was the date when Tony & I reported fully, yet it’s taken the Mirror over a month to come up with this.

Like the Coroner's office, the Mirror clearly doesn't consider it to be of any particular importance.
Maybe Messrs McCann might see some pecuniary interest on the horizon, although I very much doubt it.
Another clue bites the dust!

As always, the Mail is quick to pick-up on a story and embellish to satiate the eager reader. It's an extended story, a reiteration of past stories about Oakley International.
Painting them as the devil incarnate but carefully avoiding mention that the Find Madeleine Fund Co. Ltd, made no attempts to recover the money they willingly paid to the organisation. Funny that innit! I can't be bothered to post the whole article, it's old news just to get the name McCann back in the headlines. Besides, the Mail is like an online carnival these days
James Bond-style' private eye - who conned Madeleine McCann's parents out of £300,000 claiming he could find her - died in fall at Surrey home before being found covered in blood, coroner rules
Kevin Halligen, 56, ran Oakley International, which got the publicly donated cash
His home was said to have been 'bloodied' when he was found there in 2018
A postmortem found he died of an acute subdural haemorrhage at Surrey home

Well, at least the Germans won't need to pay his fare to attend the show-trial of the century.
Remarkably convenient for some, eh?

Re: Madeleine McCann private detective found dead in pool of blood had died in fall
Is he dead? Really?
This is a fraudster, a man with many names, and no doubt many passports, drivers licences, addresses etc. etc. Probably a false death certificate too.
I wouldn't mind betting that he worked for MI5 or MI6 and still does, under yet another identity. Either that, or he has retired and wants a peaceful life.
Is there any real evidence that he is dead, apart from what we read in our fake news outlets?

I'm going to look into the name. Powell? I think that was his partner's surname. Need to check.
