The ongoing coronavirus lockdown means that Kate and Gerry will be unable to meet well-wishers at a war memorial in Rothley, Leicestershire, on Sunday, and will stay at home instead

Madeleine McCann’s parents will be alone on the anniversary of her disappearance for the first time this year because of the lockdown.
Kate and Gerry usually attend a prayer service to mark the grim date on which she vanished from a holiday flat in Portugal in 2007.
They had hoped the PM would announce an easing of Covid-19 restrictions on Thursday.
But the ongoing lockdown means they cannot gather with well-wishers at the war memorial in Rothley, Leicestershire, on Sunday.
Instead, they will spend the 13th anniversary at home with twins Sean and Amelie, 15, and hold an online vigil with relatives.
A source said: “It’s a difficult time every year but this year more so because of the restrictions.
“They usually get comfort from being with friends and family. That obviously won’t be possible due to the lockdown.”
Kate, 52, said she was “overwhelmed” by support at last year’s service.
It was the first time she had been apart from cardiologist Gerry, 51, on the date because he was working in Italy.
Madeleine was three when she vanished in Praia da Luz and Kate and Gerry have never given up hope of being reunited.
Portuguese police shelved their much-maligned probe in 2008. Last June, Scotland Yard was cleared to continue its own investigation for another year

Kate McCann welcomes spokesman and relative Brian Kennedy to communal service
Press report May 2019:
The service for Madeleine and other missing children was held in the Rothley Baptist Church which was standing room only
Vicar the Rev. Rob Gladstone, who led the prayers, opened the service by saying: ‘A warm and a very dry welcome. Even after twelve years of hoping and praying we trust that God has not abandoned us or Madeleine. We come together again to show our support for Kate and Gerry, for other parents of missing children and young people, to help keep alive the tune of hope which persists through all the storms and sorrows.’
Read .... it was a communal service for lost souls.
Nice try - no coconut!

Re: Madeleine McCann parents alone for first time on anniversary of her disappearance
Seems wholly appropriate.
In Christianity, especially the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic traditions, a vigil is often held when someone is gravely ill or for mourning. Prayers are said and votives are often made. Vigils extend from eventual death to burial, ritualistically to pray for a loved one, but more so their body is never left alone.

Re: Madeleine McCann parents alone for first time on anniversary of her disappearance
I understood the McCanns are staunch Roman Catholics, especially a they even 'saw' the pope in Rome in 2007, so why did they use the Rothley Baptist church last year for a service?
Why is there no special on-line RC vigil for Maddie conducted by the Priest via Sacred Heart RC church in Rothley, or does the Catholic church draw the line at their games, as of course, Maddie has never been declared dead and the priest at the time in Praia De Luz has knowledge of something, but will not divulge.
According to the family she was/is "abducted" and no funeral service has been held for her, so does this prevent support from their religion?
