Re: Sunday Express front page - Portuguese to reopen the case???
I actually think this article from the express is a brilliant subtle piece of writing. It is giving the public the information about the Smith sighting, and also informing the public that the case can easily be reopened if the McCanns want it to be, all they and their friends have to do is help with a reconstruction. How can they possibly refuse now, after making such a song and dance about noone looking for Madeleine. Here we have the PJ offering to do this for free, no reason for a fund and private detectives anymore. They are rather boxed in now, because how will it look to the man on the street if they now refuse. Wonder what the Tapas gang will make of this, and having the reconstruction back on the agenda again. If they really wanted to help with this case, then they should all get themselves back to PDL asap, and no excuses. After all what excuse could take priority over helping with the case.

THE detective who led the initial investigation into Madeleine McCann’s disappearance believes her abductor was caught on camera – but revealed that the film was wiped before detectives saw it.
Yesterday controversial figure Goncalo Amaral backed Kate and Gerry McCann’s demand for a review and reopening of the investigation.
The Sunday Express took Mr Amaral, whose book Maddy: The Truth Of The Lie was banned briefly from bookstores, to Praia da Luz to ask him to reveal where mistakes were made.
He walked the route he believes the person who snatched Madeleine took. It begins at apartment 5A of the Ocean Club, from where the three-year-old disappeared on May 3, 2007.
Mr Amaral believes the person would have crossed a road leading to a poorly lit road alongside waste ground.
Standing at an entrance to the waste ground, Mr Amaral said: “This area was thoroughly searched.”
He walked a few steps and looked up at a CCTV camera and sighed loudly. The camera belongs to the Estrela da Luz resort hotel. “I believe that the person carrying a child in his arms was captured on film from that very camera,” he said.
“I asked my officers to gather all the CCTV footage in Luz but, by the time they got to this hotel, the film from this camera had been wiped over. It was a mistake and I will always regret it. I do feel Madeleine was let down.”
Walking alongside the waste ground, he enters a narrow street called Rua da Escola Primaria. “This is where there was a significant sighting of a man carrying a child in his arms,” he said. “He was seen by a witness, Martin Smith from Ireland.”
I thought Dr Amaral believed that Madeleine died in the McCanns apartment and fluids found lead him to believe that Madeleine's body had been refrigerated. Is he now saying that Madeleine was abducted, because if he is, it makes a mockery of what he has written in his book. Unless of course the Express have twisted something Dr Amaral said into something he didn't say.

Regarding the mirror's use of "abductor", it is factually correct.
Indeed Madeleine was abducted from apartment 5a, abduction needn't be carried out by a stranger. The removal of Madeleine was a deceitful act, the purpose was to hide her body so that those responsible for her demise could evade capture, gain public sympathy and rake in oodles of money - Ask the McCanns[/quote]

I enlarged the image Sharonl, it is grainy, but it looks like Amaral to me, the posture is correct for sure.
It looks like GA to me. Was it the Express that had the interview with Sophia a while back?
There are two on-line articles being discussed in this thread. The one focusing on GA is amazing really ! What next, David Payne??
Actually, the Express might just break all records if they put a scary close-up of Payne on the cover with a headline referring to the K.Gaspar statement and the Leics Plod delay!!

Kandang, I agree that the posture is close but looking at the paper this seems to be a much older man, the face is also much fatter. I don`t believe that this is Amaral.
hmmmm, I have to disagree. Impersonation is a very dangerous game to play at the best of times, I cannot see the Express attempting this at all - Also, what would be the purpose of such a stunt?
We shall see.

Anyone find it strange the media here didn't report on Amaral's book ban being lifted but did report them going to see Everton play? Apart from what actually happened to Madeleine the media backing the McCanns is something I wonder almost daily

Re: Sunday Express front page - Portuguese to reopen the case???
Ok, I accept that the picture of Amaral is genuine but what about the rest of this article.
In summary, according to this article:-
1.Mr Amaral backs the the demand for a review and reopening of the case
2.He agreed to meet with the Sunday Express to reveal where mistakes were made in the investigation.
3.He claims that the "Abductor" was caught on camera but the footage was wiped before they could get to it.
4.He walked the route that he believes that the person who snatched Madeleine took
5.He says that a Man was seen carrying a child by Martin Smith
6.He indicates that the abductor may have walked towards an empty villa with a large Garden - his officers spent a lot time there
7.Any new investigation should seriously consider the statement of Mr Smith
How much, if any truth at all is in this article?
1. We know that Goncalo Amaral would welcome the re-opening of the case, he has stated this many times but does he support a review? The inference in the article is that he now supports Kate and Gerry.
2.Highly unlikely in my opinion, but he may have something up his sleeve - Mistakes in catching the real culprits, like going too easy on them or trusting Leics cops to co-operate, not charging anyone with child neglect?
3.Quite possibly, if Martin Smiths statement is correct and a man was seen with a child, then it is reasonable to accept that this may have been caught on camera. The Express have been very crafty in their wording here, using the term "Abductor" as if Amaral has now confessed to there being such a person. Some of these cameras tend to run for a while and then overwrite the film when it starts up again, Amaral may well have admitted that there was a missed opportunity to catch the person who may have been carrying Madeleine.
4.Did`nt Martin Smith identify Gerry as that man? Oops, has James Murray missed something here. This witness was allegedly approached by Brian Kennedy and as I remember, just before the case was shelved, Amaral said that this very important witness did not come.
6. This is the very first that I have heard of this Villa with a large Garden, did I miss this, or is it one of the things that Amaral has not said yet? The clue here is that his officers spent a lot of time there. What were they looking for, an abductor who hid there for a few moments until the coast was clear? highly unlikely. If Amaral said this then there must have been something of significance in that Garden.
7. The Smith statement clearly says that he say a man carrying a lifeless child and later he identified the man as Gerry, If Amaral is saying that this is to be taken seriously then he clearly stands by all that he has said before.
So what is this all about? Why all the fuss? Why the need to rush back to Lisbon to speak with their lawyers, why not wait until something happens?
My analysis is that something has come about that warrants the re-opening of the case, Martin Smith deciding that he should be interviewed by the PJ after all, something found in that Garden, some old CCTV footage turning up? who knows. But, if they are making out that the re-opening is their idea, rushing off to Lisbon to meet thier lawyers, and don`t forget the rats that have recently deserted the sinking ship, the Home Office turning their backs on them, the ban on the book being overturned, the sheer panic in the setting up of the petition and appeal for funds we can be almost certain that something is in the air.
I think that there may be a lot of truth in this article but it has been manipulated by the author.
I just hope that Amaral is right and that very soon we will all know the truth about the lie.

Excellent points there Candyfloss, I had`nt looked at it from this angle. My first reaction was to be annoyed at the Express for trying to manipulate its readers into believing that Amaral is now supporting the McCanns and their abduction theory, utter rubbish of course, but reading between the lines and knowing whats gone on in McCannland lately I think that there may be an element of truth in the article even if it has been manipulated to suit their own agenda.

Yes - I agree I read somewhere that Gerry agreed that someone had 'taken' Madeleine from the apartment - he admitted she was taken not "abducted". I am going to try and find it because this was a 'slip' from Gerry. He may have accidentally referred to a third person disposing of Madeleine.

Yes - I agree with what you say - the fact that GA refers to an abductor does not detract from his belief that she died - just that someone took Madeleine from the apartment.
I hadn't heard about the empty Villa before either. But then, GA has said that there is a lot of information that has been withheld.

What a clever piece the Express one is. No one, who wanted to find anything to sue for, could. It is imo very clever and better still will very gently give many people information that they have not had before.
So Mr and Mrs what you going to do now??
On a serious note and not with tongue in cheek. What about the twins. The atmosphere in their house must be terrible. Poor kids.

Re: Sunday Express front page - Portuguese to reopen the case???
I agree Candyfloss, I have asked friends' opinions on the article (their knowledge of the case is based on what they have read in newspapers) and they all thought it very strange that the McCanns and their friends refused to take part in a reconstruction and have never asked the PJ to re-open the case - given the allegations they are hurling at the authorities, the McCanns behaviour is starting to be viewed with increasing suspicion by 'the man on the street.'
'The couple, doctors from Rothley, Leicestershire, are due to fly to Lisbon on Tuesday to consult their lawyers.
Legal sources in Portugal say they should use their visit to ask their lawyer to formally write a letter to the Policia Judiciaria and to the Portuguese attorney-general’s office.
If a review was ordered, the Policia Judiciaria would suggest that there should be reconstructions of two key incidents on the evening of May 3, 2007, in Praia da Luz on the Algarve.'
Well McCanns what are you waiting for, time for you and your Tapas chums to get your backsides back over to PDL.

There is
No pint to having the case reopened, the evidence that wasnt gotten at the time is old and may not even be available, the samples are lost/destroyed..memories dulled, but a new search would help..as in for a body

Lets hope so, as far as I am aware there are no restrictions on publishing the book in the UK are there?
Not sure about restrictions - I think it's more about bottle. And Richard Desmond has that. In spades.
He was never just going to write off a million quid, was he?
Dougall
I totally agree with this - it maybe that RD does know something which he can't yet publish but you can be sure if there is any chance of clawing back anything from the McCanns and more on top - no paper is going to pass up the opportunity.

Re: Sunday Express front page - Portuguese to reopen the case???
I know this is an old article, BUT working backwards from the present, I think there could be truth in here.
Agreed it is VERY well-worded (and I wouldn't say it backs the McCanns at all)
Now, when the UK review or whatever you wish to call it was announced, we then discovered Portugal had been working on the case again for over a year - that would take you back to May 2010 time. Is it possible that is why, if certain persons 'got wind of this' early, there was such a push for a UK version?
Jus' wonderin.....

I find it astonishing that the CCTV footage from the camera mentioned was erased at all, let alone so quickly. The world and his wife knew of this story very quickly, so what I would like to know is who erased the tapes, at what point and why? Anyone with an ounce of sense would have ensured they were handed over to the PJ in case they contained any evidence.

All Kate needs is a stamp, to Portugal, if she's not willing to camp outside the Chief Police Commissioner's door, if she truly wants the case reopen - it is in plain language as SIMPLE as that! In short, she should ACT instead of just SPEAK.
With it being the highest profile missing child case, their connections, and infinite media continual interest in plastering their case on the front pages so much so that even when Kate so much as fart at home the press are reporting it, surely if she actively sought a re-opening it will be on the front pages. That woman should put her money where her mouth is or STFU.
I am utterly, thoroughly, and pissingly sick to the back teeth of her lies. What's betting 2013 is going to be yet another year for her to recycle her LIES. Madeleine is, at best a once-upon-a-time incidental history in a hidden corner of her brain; and at worst a figment of her imaginations. Well done Kate, you best endeavor in your search for Madeleine is a but a well documented tale in the history of Deceits and nothing else; and you wonder why people don't believe you. Deal with that Kate - you will never be believed unless you cooperate with investigators to eliminate yourself from the *homicide* equation.

Kate, you can anaesthetize your own conscience and we know you are a specialist in that, what you cannot do is FOOL people.
There's nothing like telling it as it is, and you've done EXACTLY that!
I think we're all getting pissingly sick to the back teeth of the McCanns and their web of deceit and the people around them who protect them for all that their lives are worth.
Let's hope that the pack of sordid cards comes tumbling down when Goncalo has his day in court and that 2013 puts an end to the McCanns' never ending saga and money making scam.
