Phone box link in hunt for missing Madeleine McCann

DETECTIVES are investigating phone calls made from a telephone box in Praia da Luz in a bid to trace a man acting suspiciously shortly before Madeleine McCann disappeared.

A couple working at the Dolphin restaurant opposite the phone box contacted Portuguese detectives just after Madeleine went missing and made formal police statements.

The woman said the “strange” man looked similar to a photofit of a suspect.

That led Portugal’s public prosecutor to order all phone records for the call box to be checked in an effort to find the man, who has never been traced.

The prosecutor made the order on the grounds that the man may have abducted or murdered the lost three-year-old.

Madeleine disappeared from the family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz on the Algarve in May 2007. 

Her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, of Rothley, Leicestershire, have vowed never to give up hope of finding her.  

Portuguese detectives, working closely with Scotland Yard, have prioritised fresh inquiries to identify the mystery caller and have been checking all calls made to and from the box in the days leading up to Madeleine’s abduction 10 years ago next month. Although they have identified many people who made calls to the public phone they have still not been able to find the man.

Madeleine went missing from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, in Portugal’s Algarve 9 years ago. 

The call box is 50 yards from the spot where a man carrying a child similar to Madeleine was seen by Irishman Martin Smith and his family, who had been dining at the Dolphin at around 9pm on the night she disappeared.  

On the night of her disappearance South Africans Adrian and Lizelle Marais were working at the Dolphin.  

Policia Judiciaria files on the case outline what Lizelle told officers the day after Madeleine vanished.  

The report states: “The person used the public telephone for long periods of time, always more than 10 minutes. 

“To her, the person did not appear to be either a tourist or a resident. One time she had passed close to him and had felt ‘strange’ but did not know why.” 

After reading the statements Public Prosecutor Jose Menezes took the rare step of signing a legal document allowing police to check the records of the public call box. Work on identifying callers was undertaken before the Portuguese inquiry was shelved in 2008.  

Despite fresh inquiries, the Sunday Express understands they have still not been able to identify the man. South African Wim Bosman, 46, has owned the Dolphin restaurant for 20 years and joined in the searches after Madeleine vanished.  

He said: “Some people said a child had gone missing and me and Adrian immediately joined the hunt to try to find her. We went down to the Ocean Club. There were a lot of people there, maybe over 50 people but the numbers grew to well over 100 people. 

“I saw Kate and Gerry outside the apartment but I didn’t speak to them.  

“I half expected to see a little girl crying on a bench asking for her mummy and daddy. Like many people then, I thought it was just a case of a child getting lost and that she would turn up. 

“By midnight there must have been more than 100 people looking everywhere, in gardens, under vehicles, down on the beach, in alleyways. Some people were calling out her name. 

“Later Lizelle and Adrian mentioned seeing a strange man and said they wanted to speak to the police.  

“They have split up and gone back to South Africa but I am sure they are still interested in developments.  

“Ten years is a long time. I just hope police can discover what happened.”

The Dolphin/Dolfino phone box entered relevance early in the case, as the owners of the Dolfino restaurant both mentioned an unusual man hanging around the phone box in the days leading up to the events of May 3rd. A photofit was drawn up from Dereck Flack’s sighting, and was corroborated by the Marais couple. A photofit was also drawn up from the testimony of Lance Purser, who was describing an individual he saw in the weeks before (likely not the same person).

Sometimes the brother's employee goes to the telephone booth to pay and give him some indications as was the case in May.

Subsequent inquiries found that this telephone number is installed in Rua de Sao Reno, lot 3 - 6 drt, Monte Estoril and is used by Sr P*** R****** M**** d L*******, a retired TAP employee who lives at that address with his wife. During an informal conversation with this man it was established that he has relatives in the Algarve, namely a brother in P da L. Sometimes the brother's employee goes to the telephone booth to pay and give him some indications as was the case in May.

No relation was found between the numbers from the list of calls made from the booth and the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

Perhaps there is a new aftershave called 'mysterious stranger", a subtle scent that cases people to think the wearer is somehow different and suspicious, attracts the attention of liars and cheaters and those seeking to conceal a crime or who want to get their 15 minutes of fame and/or a possible financial benefit.

Maybe it was Harry Keogh 'The necroscope' using the mobius continuum allowing him to transport himself and anyone else with him anywhere in the multiverse.
Sadly he became a Wamphyr via the spores of the vampire Faethor Ferenczy,and went over to starside till he died.

It would explain why there was no physical evidence of an abduction either of entry/exit or any traces within the apartment and why Maddie has seemingly vanished off the face of the earth.

This is just as believable as any explanation that she was abducted by a rich childless couple desperate for a child.
Abducted by child traffickers and living in a rich arab's house.
Abducted by a paedophile who is treating her like a princess.
Wandered off and was found by someone who  was desperate for a child to love.
Living in a hellhole somewhere within 10 miles of PDL in the wild lands and unexplored areas in Portugal.
Living happily with a new family not knowing who she is or that she was abducted.
Living with gypsies.
Being passed around by a paedophile ring.
Alive somewhere and not dead.
Definitely not dead.
Definitely didn't die in the apartment the week of the vacation then was hidden away by the mccanns and possibly accomplices and then moved 20 plus days later in the hire car. Definitely not dead, since if she was and the mccanns knew as they were involved, that would make the fund fraudulent.

Sorry, I know this is a serious matter but I've just been almost  hysterical with laughter reading this post.  All these 'didn't look like tourist' comments are beyond ridiculous.

The Smith family sighting of a man carrying a child on the night of 3rd May 2007, in Luz, is problematic throughout.
Three members of the Smith family gave first statements on 26 May 2007, some 23 days after the sighting, after a lot of publicity about the case, and the day after the Jane Tanner sighting, and description, was made public.  (This news of the Tanner sighting was NOT the trigger for the Smith statements.)
Martin Smith (father), Peter Smith (Martin’s son, with a family of his own) and Aoife Smith (12 year old daughter of Martin) were those giving the first Smith statements.

They dined at the Dolphin restaurant, which is the building on the left.

(The phone box in front is the one where the Dolphin owner saw a man making strange phone calls in the days before Madeleine’s disappearance.)
The tree behind the phone box is at the end of a road which has pedestrian access, but not car access, to the area in the centre of the photo.  This may be important in solving the Smith sighting.
If your eyes are sharp, you can just see a person, in a white T-shirt and orangey-red shorts, behind the tree, coming down the “Street of Steps”, a pedestrian lane leading from the photo location up to Rua 25 de Abril.
Next to the Street of Steps, with brown doors is Fernando’s, aka Bar Calheta.  Then there are 3 houses, one obviously a ruin.
At the right is Kelly’s bar.
Finally, note the car park.  That is busy throughout the day and late into the night, as it is one of the few areas for parking in this vicinity.
On with the Smith statements.  Martin, Peter and Aoife say 9 of the family ate there on 3rd May 2007- 4 adults and 5 children.  Martin and Peter say the group left at about 9pm.  Aoife puts it around 9:30pm.  A documentary based on Gonçalo Amaral´s book “The Truth of the Lie” says the bill was paid by credit card, and this was time-stamped as 9:27pm.  (See Joana Morais for the video and a full transcript in English.)
All three state they went to Kelly’s pub for some drinks.  This seems curious as they could have more drinks in the Dolphin and as all three say Peter’s pregnant wife was feeling unwell and that Peter’s family were due to fly back to Ireland in the morning.  Martin makes it ‘early morning’, and it turns out he was the one to drive them to Faro airport for that early flight.
What appear to be the timed receipts for Kelly’s bar for that evening are on the Internet.  (I have yet to check if these are valid.)  The receipts are for small amounts and are a poor match for a group of 9.
The three statements put departure time from Kelly´s at around 9:50pm to 10pm.  This could be correct, but if Martin and Peter’s recollection of nearly an hour in Kelly’s having some drinks is correct, it would shift the sighting to more like 10:30pm.  While if the departure time is correct, it begs again the question of why go to Kelly’s with an unwell pregnant wife and an early morning flight to come?  (Note, there was a convenience store a minute away if a subset of the group wanted more drinks.)
Whatever, the group left Kelly’s, passed the front of Fernando’s, turned right to go up the Street of Steps to the junction at Rua 25 de Abril.
