A former nanny who looked after Madeleine McCann has opened up about the night the little girl disappeared. Madeleine was on holiday with her twin siblings and parents Kate and Gerry in Praia da Luz, Portugal when she vanished in May 2007. It's been almost ten years and in an interview with The Mirror's Matthew Young, the ex-nanny has recalled that night's terrible events.
The former child minder, who has not been named, said: "A parent came to me and said there was something going on, and said someone's looking for a child, I didn't instantly think it was Maddie. I walked into Kate crying, friends comforting her, Gerry looking under cars, and it just blew up. I don't even think she saw me. I just stood next to her and tried to comfort her. She was pacing up and down. The worst possible thing had just happened to her." The ex-nanny said Kate was crying, "almost in a catatonic state", while Gerry was "very distressed". She added: "That's the one thing I really remember from him, looking under the cars. I can't forget that."

The unnamed witness worked at the Ocean Club resort in the Algarve as a child minder. She took it in turns to care for Maddie, who was three years old when she disappeared. Throughout the night, she and other employees at the resort scoured the area alongside police and Maddie's parents. Staff also walked Praia da Luz's small, winding streets until they were told to stop, against their will, at 5am the following morning.

Today, Flemish  broadsheet the Latest News ('Het Laatste Nieuws') held two letters to the editor commenting on the nanny no-no interview. One from a pro, one from an anti McCann. Or rather: one believer, one realist.

The odd thing being, that the interview is printed in the same edition of this newspaper. 

So how come these two letters commented on an interview which had not yet appeared when they were written and sent?

Seems strange that, having been told she's been abducted, they're "told" to start looking in bins. By whom ? By her own admission, the police were late arriving so who told them ?

To be looking in bins for a dead body so soon in the search  is very strange indeed.

The McCanns could surely sue Warners for negligence. According to Nanny Whoever,  Warners  knew the area was unsafe but at the same time  neglected to give their paying clients that information.

Not at all - this is just press sensationalism, what they do best.

This is the 21st century, wherever you go in the world you are at risk, it's not confined to Portugal no matter how the tabloids wish to cash-in on the loss of an innocent child. 

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office and tour operators alike, warn travellers to safeguard their property and not put themselves at risk. Any destination with a high concentration of tourists is a target for criminals, such activity is not confined to rape or child abduction - indeed statistically they are low on the list of possibilities.  You're more likely to get your throat slit for your mobile phone than de-bagged by a rampant predator.

There is no such nicety as 'it felt so safe'!

But don't you think the McCanns were behind this article? It lists the things they want people to think: that its  the fault of the Ocean Club because they weren't informed of any danger, or it's the fault of the police for not arriving sooner or investigating properly. cEan

Unless the nanny was sitting outside the apartment, or in the apartment and not searching, how would she know what time the police arrived?

Frankly, I don't believe a word of it - just another predictable pre-anniversary blitz of nonsense stories.

Good point however about the fault being the Ocean Club for not informing guests of the dangers, I've seen this excuse put across many a time by the McCann defence league.

Far be it for me to suggest that tourists take responsibility for their own safety - starting with not leaving three very young vulnerable children alone every night, in an unlocked apartment, to fend for themselves, if indeed that's what they did do. 

Personally I think this was a story concocted to give an abductor the opportunity to abduct.  Thinking about it reasonably, it flies in the face of instinctive parenting, or in McCann speak - responsible parenting !!!

“We automatically went into lost-child procedure.  In these situations, the first thing we do is investigate the scene.  When we were coming out we saw Kate and she was screaming: ‘They’ve taken her.  They’ve taken her!’  She remained so hysterical that she could hardly communicate.”
Ten years later – a few weeks shy of the May 3^rd anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance – a new “nanny” article has been published, not just in the Mirror UK, but in papers across the US, Australia, New Zealand, even as far away as Hungary.   In other words, a global media blitz.  Why now?  What’s the point?
This time around, the nanny in the articles is intriguingly anonymous.  Is Pennington back to expand on her story, or is this some other nanny who’s waited 10 years to speak? In addition to being a witness to the McCann’s guttural grief, the nanny says the Portugal police are to blame for bungling this case and the resort town of Praia da Luz is actually a haven for violent sex crimes.

The nanny’s story that made international headlines this past week actually misses a very important insight.   Where was Kate in the minutes after Madeleine’s abduction?
The nanny that’s featured in the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] is anonymous.  Why?  Because if they named her, it would lead you back to this article from September 2007.

Now, here’s Kate’s account of what happened from her book, Madeleine:
“I checked the wardrobe in the children’s room, I ran to the kitchen, throwing open all the cupboard doors, into our bedroom, searching the wardrobes, in and out of the bathroom, all within about 15 seconds, before hurdling out through the patio doors and down towards Gerry and our friends.  As soon as our table was in sight, I started screaming ‘Madeleine’s gone, someone’s taken her.”

When you read between the lines, it’s impossible not to ask where exactly was Kate?  Was she on the balcony yelling out across the pool?  If she was, then hasn’t Gerry just lost his alibi?
If she wasn’t on the balcony, if she was somewhere else outside the apartment, why did she abandon her twins right after her daughter had just been allegedly abducted?

She is both Charlotte Pennington and Charlotte Wighton (depending on what she "decides". I have read somewhere that she worked as Wighton for Mark Warner in Greece. Her last log-in to the above profile was in Oct. '06 before the Madeleine affair and she speaks of already having Mark Warner experience. Didn't some of the Tapas group also holiday with M.W in Greece? Could they have known Charlotte from there before they ever set foot in Praia de Luz?

'i had caught the acting bug and had drama cursing through my veins. my mother, collette, picked up on this and started taking me along to her rehearsals and shows. the theatre became an absolute haven for me. the evocative allure of the stage pulling me closer and closer as i watched every flicker of emotion pass through the actors faces, the costumes, the make-up, the people. i just knew that this is it, my raison d’etre. around the year 2000 my mother remarried, to a man called stuart wighton(whom i now think of as dad, and deciding to be known as charlotte wighton, rather than charlotte pennington) and i propelled head first into the serious world of drama that i had not yet experienced. from the year 2000 to the year 2004 i had played over 16 lead roles of which included my all time favourite role, juliet from none other than romeo and juliet and anne boleyn from anne of a thousand days. i also competed 3 times a year over a course of 5 years and was fortunate enough to have done extremely well and my passion for the stage was able to be seen. my long term goal is to go to drama school which i will do once i have accumulated the fees. while all of the above was going on i did of course have school, friends and jobs. at school i took drama ( of course) but also history, photography, media studies, pe, english, history of art , travel and tourism and human biology all of which i loved. and maths, which i did not. my jobs consisted of nannying, clerical work, promotions work, acting and modelling and being a fairy. i’ve worked as a fairy since i was 14. it all started when i walked into a shop called the enchanted forest and the owner said i looked like a fairy and would i like to work there. would i ever?! it was a perfect fit, my love for performing plus my love for children combined with the added bonus of glitter. working there meant a hectic, erratic, sporadic and completely opposite to the 9-5 cliché. it was full on with handling different duties; fairying, catering, booking, accounts and retail.but it was all done in a fairy costume and with a smile. but exam time rolled around and i had to temporarily hang up my wings. after the exams i had an idea that i could run my own fairy business, which is exactly what i did. cultivating a network for my parties was a lot of fun (reminded me of a sort-of clean cut disney mafia) i was intrigued one day when i saw the shop where i had my 7th birthday party, the fairy shop was still around so i went inside and had a case of déjà vu, not only did it look the same, granted a tad smaller, the owner mentioned i looked like a fairy and would i like a job? by now you are probably conjuring up some elfin creature complete with pixie ears but i can assure you this is not the case. i think perhaps i have always given off this vibe as children all over and in any place have the urge to smile and wave at me, which i don’t mind one little bit! so, i ended working for the fairy shop as well as having my sideline business all the while attending the nanny centre and getting my nanny certificates and training. now i am hoping for another chapter of my life to begin so . i hope i have let you in a little bit of my world and that you understand more of the sort of person i am.'
 
It would be interesting to know how many parents were prepared to leave their children in Miss Pennington's care after reading that.
 
Perhaps that is why she ended up working at the Mark Warner Ocean Club.

Yes Charlotte's mother could have been Born in Ireland but I would have thought she would have mentioned some Irish link in her long, rambling, over-detailed personal statement. As for her spiriting Madeleine away, I would be more interested in knowing if she had previously met any of the tapas group at Mark Warner in Greece given that she worked there as a nanny and they holidayed there. If the times coincide it could well be that she knew them and would therefore be prepared to be economical with the truth re creche and what she witnessed that night and encourage other nannies to do the same. I venture to suggest that this might be more likely than guesswork over any link between the McCanns and Cat Baker pre 2007. The only corroborating "evidence " I've seen for this suggestion is the tenuous fact that she is listed as a facebook friend of John Cornor's daughter. This is often put forward yet it's common for people have facebook friends whom they have never met. I ask again, does anyone know if Charlotte was with M.W. in Greece at the same time the Paynes and co. holidayed there. As for Nigel Moore, utmost respect!!! A wonderful, logical, painstaking researcher.

Yes, she was on the same flight as Tanner, O'Brien and Oldfield's.

   " - Has been in Portugal since April 28th, the day upon which she began working for the Ocean Club tourist Complex in Luz, Lagos, and where she is employed as a child educator. Her work contract was completed in the U.K. with MarkWarner;
- The witness clarifies that between the 19th of April and the 04th of May 2007 she worked with a group of children staying in the aforementioned complex between the ages of 4 months and one year of age (the Baby Club);
"It is May 7th 2007. The interviewing of individual employees is continuing; employees of the Kids Club, the Tapas Bar and the Millennium. Today, Charlotte Pennington was interviewed. The interpreter who translated what she said was none other than Robert Murat.

On the matter at hand, it is said:

The informant was heard as a witness. The informant, being of English nationality, having no command of the Portuguese language either in written or in spoken form, the interview takes place in the presence of a translator: Robert Murat.

She arrived in Portugal on April 28th, the date from which she started working for the OCEAN CLUB as a nanny".
However,  despite stating that C Pennington arrived on "28 April" in another statement  (which I haven't looked at recently) she talks about her work for Warner at an earlier time. I will see if I can find it.
