Well hopefully this will be the last day of this prolonged trial which we have been eagerly waiting for, unless Mr Amaral has another surprise for the McCanns. big grin

Thread will be unlocked and opened for discussion, latest tweets and information just before trial starts..........hopefully we will have some information coming out of the proceedings.

After watching the interview with them at the airport, I think they looked quite uncomfortable. Although Gerry was smirking and trying to stifle laughter, I think that was nerves. Kate looked like she didn't know where to put herself. I wonder how much they regret suing GA.

Whatever happens today, I understood from previous reports that no verdict would be announced today.

I read that the judge would 'reserve' her decision, and probably publish it in September.

No doubt the judge will have in mind the unanimous decision of the Portuguese Court of Appeal in October 2010 - confirmed by the Portuguese Supreme Court in March 2011 - to unban Amaral's book, saying, in terms, that although Amaral's hypothesis about what may have happened to Madeleine could be wrong, he was fully entitled - under the provisions of Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights - to advance such a hypothesis, based on the factual content of the book.

I wonder why she would feel the need to take that option rather than pronounce the verdict today, though? Would she. for example, be bothered about minimising any potential public repercussions/backlash? Could there be another reason for prolonging releasing her decision any further?

Maybe that's why we heard about Maddie's human rights last week? If a judgement for Mr. A. was made based on it, then why not try and use it re. this libel trial?

He seemed quite stressed out and irritated to me. Kate trying to hide I think before she dons her dour, down trodden costume for the court.

So we know which side sky's Bread is buttered on . Im surprised they did not roll out the red carpet .
Surly meeting persons who are about to engage in court procedings , shows bias towards one side . GA should have been also interviewed for balance .

The judgement i have read on this forum, and it has been discussed will be given at a later date . Not today but The McCann's will be giving there own Judgement outside the court when procedings are concluded .you can bet on that . Lets hope GA has a trick up his sleeve . to usurp them .

If only Brunty would give a breakdown of the money.....come on Brunty tell the general public how much the McCann parents are claiming for themselves. Tell them how much they are claiming for each of their children.

Personally I don't think today will make a blind bit of difference to the judges decision, a heartfelt plea that is non evidence based is pretty worthless. We should all bear in mind however that the claim is made against when the book was published, did it harm the supposed search? it does not take into account the current thinking from SY. They imo do have a weak argument that says yes however Goncalo only reports what the investigation found therefore it can't be libelous. Good luck Goncalo though you should not need luck on your side, only justice.

This is a very controversial case, with major political considerations and consequences. The reputation of Portugal, its policing and its judicial administration, is only one of many issues at stake here.

'Reserving' a judgment is not uncommon, and happens typically where there are range of legal issius to consider, or the arguments are finely balanced, or the case is highly sensitive for one reason or another.

The case may well be one of those where the judge, despite the usual protestations of 'judicial independence', is going to confer with some very senior people indeed in the Portuguese political establishment before announcing her verdict.

IF he was he's a fcuking hypocrite, because he has been seen on at least two 'public' occasions NOT wearing one.

Is it true that GA has given the court ALL the laughing/grinning photos of the McCanns WHEN they say they WERE 'depressed/destroyed' by claims in GA's based, on the official police investigation files, 'book'?

Just seen the interview on Sky, do we know who the middle aged guy travelling with them is? I am guessing an extradition lawyer of some sort, not seen him before.

or is it one for kate , gerry . sean . amelie , madeleine and then one on behalf of family and friends ?
