Grange started on 12 May 2011, so if the 24th October last year is correct, Grange pre-dates the reopening of Portuguese investigation by a considerable amount of time. Did the "new evidentiary elements" come from Grange perhaps?

The Portuguese investigation started months before Op Grange IIRC. The process was only opened not long ago, but they had a team up and running before Grange.

So its a bit like Grange starting off as a review but only becoming a formal investigation after several months?
I must admit that I was under the same impression as you; that the Portuguese reopening came before Grange but that's only because I've seen it suggested on here that reason for starting Grange might be a response to the Portuguese investigation restarting. (I haven't expressed that very well but I'm sure you get my drift)

The Portuguese commenced their review before the UK, in March 2011, and applied to the Public Ministry to re-open the case and which was confirmed in Oct 2013.

The Public Ministry determined the reopening of the inquest concerning the disappearance of the minor Madeleine McCann, according to article 279º, no 1, of the Code of Criminal Procedure, following a proposal of the Judiciary Police and following the submission of new evidentiary elements which justify furthering the investigation.
In the aforesaid inquest, ongoing at the Prosecutors Office of Portimão, due to the imposed system of judicial secrecy, it was requested to the appropriate Criminal Proceedings' Judge to postpone the deadline to access the files for a time-frame objectively necessary for the completion of the investigation.

Re: Reason for the Portuguese reopening
Perfect! Thank you Woofer. That does make the timing of the opening of Grange - two months after the start of the Portuguese review - very interesting.
The Portuguese case then became a full investigation in October 2013 because there's new evidence that makes it worthwhile. Do we know when grange upgraded to an investigation? I've often wondered what caused the upgrade but it could be that, once the Public Ministry gave the go ahead to reopen, the Portuguese shared the new evidence with Scotland Yard and that caused the English review to become an investigation

I`ve looked but can`t find when it officially became an Investigation - perhaps I`m using the wrong keywords - does anyone else know?AndyB wrote:Perfect! Thank you Woofer. That does make the timing of the opening of Grange - two months after the start of the Portuguese review - very interesting.

Re: Reason for the Portuguese reopening
As far as I'm aware, Op Grange moved from an investigative review to a full scale serious crime investigation cJuly of last year.

Re: Reason for the Portuguese reopening
Sure it was July 2013 when it was said SY were reopening the investigation & taking the lead role with reports that cell site analysis was the key? Is it when Brunty tweeted it was investigating the murder of Madeleine McCann?...PJ reopened around the time the crimewatch in Germany/Holland was showing/finished 24 October 2013...Smithman?
