The Thompsons previously reported that they had tracked Osama bin Laden down to a cave in Pakistan, and got themselves on the front covers of several newspapers for doing so. I do not know how much they were paid for that story.
Clearly a highly credible couple, which is no doubt why no one has bothered talking to them for the last 4 years.
The question remains, who has put this onto the front pages now, and why ?
What are they wanting to conceal ?
Where do they not want us to look ?

This bit is particularly interesting:

In the spring of 1999, A British couple called Alan and Cindy Thompson were driving through Pakistan, in the very area that they're now talking about as being bin Laden's location. After driving for 11 hours on dirt roads they came to a checkpoint and were detained by armed Pakistani guards.

The next day the Dawn newspaper, one of the biggest newspapers in Pakistan, reported that this couple had found the secret lair of Osama bin Laden.

More interesting is that they reported that this location had been visited by US consulate officers, British, Australian, and Swiss ambassadors, and that it was guarded by a team of US commandoes.

After the couple were picked up by the British embassy they were invited to a garden party where all the British ambassadors and aid workers were bragging that they were stationed in the same area as bin Laden's secret hideout.

After the couple got back home to England they saw a newspaper article calling for the capture of bin Laden. This was a few months before Clinton signed an executive order mandating bin Laden to be killed on sight.

The couple immediately contacted Scotland Yard in London; they contacted the FBI and the Pentagon and in every case got nothing. No response, no request for an interview. Nothing.

I hope that someone will break ranks, the relief would be enormous. What a hell certain people have made for themselves.

I think that if the group was questioned firmly about all the anomalies and discrepancies and felt under pressure someone would cave in. Oh how I hope for a reconstruction, ordered not requested... the Benny Hill show we would see for that evening would be very amusing were it not part of a tragedy.

How many British Ambassadors does the FO send to Pakistan? The number is always 1. There might been consular staff but if that quote is from the Thompsons it would weaken their story.
But the underqualified school leavers calling themselves journalists may be to blame.

If the arrival of a couple of 'adventurous' Brits wasn't too commonplace, they may well have been invited to a garden party. Which is usually given by the Ambassador, I expect in that climate a few times a year.
Bin Laden had been involved in the Nairobi bombing - Benazir Bhuto said on camera that Bin Laden died sometime in 2002. Some think she was murdered for that reason. Bin Laden was an asset to the CIA - alive until such time as his death could be used for political purposes.
