New female Attorney General appointed in Portugal

Portugal‘s president is to appoint Joana Marques Vidal as attorney general – the first time a woman will have headed the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Marques Vidal, who is currently deputy attorney general, is to take office on 12 October, according to a statement on the presidency’s website.
The six-year term of the current attorney general, Fernando Pinto Monteiro, ends on 9 October.
Under Portugal’s constitution, the president appoints the attorney general “at the proposal of the government”.
