I hear the editor of the Sun on the radio today saying it would have been derelict in its duty not to report the comments from the Queen about Brexit. Equally it would have been derelict in its duty not to report a load of horse s**t on the same day about Madeleine McCann being alive and well in Paraguay.

Newspapers, totally irrelevant today but the establishment continually con people that they are vital to our society. I'm with Richard D Hall on this one.

Pack Rules were drawn up decades ago by reporters on the road and are frowned upon by newspaper management as they rule out the possibility of their paper landing 'a belting EXCLUSIVE'.
But they were born out of necessity and self-preservation. Necessity because it is often impossible for one single reporter to cover every angle of the story. There may be three people at three seperate addresses to speak to, for example. Or one person may be dispatched to the scene of a murder to speak to neighbours while another hunts for relatives and another talks to police officers and employers. Others may try to source a photograph. The 'information' is then 'pooled' and the following morning, the newspaper-reading public gets to read a fully rounded news story. The 'content' is often the same and only the writing style differs.
The job of the reporter on the Guardian or the Telegraph is often no different to the job of the reporter on the The Sun or Daily Mirror, Express, Daily Star, Daily Mail etc, And everybody co-operates with each other as 'colleagues'.
In the 'evenings', back at the hotel, the following day's 'work' will be divided among each other over a lavish dinner and vast amounts of alcohol.
Obeying Pack Rules rarely if ever, results in big, revealing exclusive for the reporter, but allows them to sleep at night, safe in the knowledge that they won't be scooped by their rivals in the morning. A reporter who misses an important angle to a story that all the other papers have obtained will face a rough time from the office. He or She may survive one newsgathering catastrophe, if they are fortunate. But two will almost certainly see you fired, especially in rough, tough, highly competitive tabloid market.
A reporter who dares to keep an exclusive angle to himself will see the coveted tag 'Exclusive' next to his byline and receive generous praise and maybe a bonus cheque from his editor. But he will risk being shunned by the pack and deliberately kept out of the loop on the next important story. Reporters in this situation will normally try to pass off the exclusive angle as being obtained by someone back at their office and fed into the copy by the 'subs' (sub-editors, who lay out and design the pages) But the pack generally sifts out the truth".

There is an upside to all this nonsense - people start Googling "Madeleine McCann" and they end up reading more sensible posts, the truth even.  Clarence Mitchell and his band of merry clowns don't realise that are increasing traffic to our social network sites, forums and blogs where the truth can be read.
