Madeleine McCann: Spotted In Italy And At The National Theatre
MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann - Waiting for the Amaral verdict, we learn of why the police investigated the McCanns and how hundreds of Maddies were spotted…
Daily Record: “Revealed: Portuguese police have ignored possible sightings of missing Madeleine McCann”
PORTUGUESE police have ignored dramatic new possible sightings of Madeleine McCann, it emerged yesterday.
Why are the possible sightings dramatic?
Details of them are included in a dossier, which includes photos of girls “shockingly similar” to the missing youngster.
In the Mirror, a sighting of a child becomes:
Maddy cops missed vital hunt clues
The most significant lead involved a series of reported sightings within a week in the same area of northern Italy.
Why are they the most significant? The Mirror does not say. The McCanns’ lawyer Isabel Duarte brings these pictures to the world’s attention. And adds:
“I’m angry because it is the police who should be doing this.”
Has she seen the full file? If so, has she shown it to the innocent McCanns, to see if they think one of the girls in the pictures os their daughter.
So far, Madeleine has also been seen in: Sweden, Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Majorca, Belgium, Bosnia, France, Australia, Brazil, Wales, Malta, Italy and Dorset.
“They were shocked at what was in it and, even worse, what little had been done to follow any of it up. Kate and Gerry have consistently known that potential fresh information was not being properly followed up, if at all.”
The facts:
The potential new leads date from July 2008 when the case was officially shelved by Portuguese police after they failed to find any evidence of the missing girl.
The Mail explains why:
But arrogant detectives were so convinced by their own theory that Madeleine died on the night she disappeared, and that her parents faked her abduction, that they made no attempt to check the sightings.
The Sun has more facts, and in “’Liar’ cop ignored hundreds of Maddie sightings”, tells readers:
COPS in Portugal ignored hundreds of “sightings” of Madeleine McCann - because they believed she was dead, it was claimed yesterday.
Inspector Ricardo Paiva also neglected to show her parents “shockingly similar” photos the public had sent in believing they were Maddie - or act on tip-offs.
Instead he put every bit in a dossier after writing on it: “Not relevant to the investigation”.
What else have we learnt from the case against Goncalo Amaral? The Yorkshire Post has news of the police advice to probe the McCanns:
The UK policing agency that advised Portuguese detectives to consider the possibility of the McCanns’ involvement in their daughter Madeleine’s disappearance said yesterday this was common practice.
The comments came after it emerged in a Lisbon court on Wednesday that the National Policing Improvement Agency recommended police investigate Gerry and Kate McCann.
The revelation was made by lawyers for former Portuguese detective Goncalo Amaral.
An agency spokesman said: “In disappearance cases it is common for the NPIA to advise investigating officers to consider the possibility of the involvement of family and close friends. This is good practice for investigating such cases.
“The NPIA gave similar generic advice to the Portuguese police in the Madeleine McCann case.”
And in case you were getting bored with the facts, here’s the fiction in the Indy:
Indeed, it could be argued that, in these days of beleaguered masculinity and kept house-husbands, you would get more moral mileage out of reverse-gender adaptations of plays such as A Doll’s House and, despite the problem of her pregnancy, Hedda Gabler. And, while I admire the script of Samuel Adamson’s Mrs Affleck (I was ill and did not see the show at the National Theatre) in its dissection of the 1950s, it makes too many distracting departures from the Ibsen play, Little Eyolf, on which it is based, to be in enough creative tension with it.
The original examines the marital aftermath of the death of a child who had previously been crippled from a fall sustained when his parents were making love. While respectfully registering all the acute differences in the two scenarios, I feel it fair to say that a modern Ibsen would be interested, as a subject, in the trials of the McCann family after the disappearance of their daughter Madeleine.

Revealed: Portuguese police have ignored possible sightings of missing Madeleine McCann
Feb 12 2010 By Martin Fricker
PORTUGUESE police have ignored dramatic new possible sightings of Madeleine McCann, it emerged yesterday.
Details of them are included in a dossier, which includes photos of girls "shockingly similar" to the missing youngster.
The file also includes a cluster of sightings in Italy and pictures of car number plates taken by witnesses.
But Portuguese cops have refused to investigate any of the possible sightings of Madeleine, who would now be six.
Kate and Gerry McCann found out about the file last week when it was referred to in a court case.
They were said to be horrified at what little had been done to follow up the leads, which date from 2008. That was when the case was shelved by police.
A source close to the McCanns said: "The Portuguese line was that they were involved and Madeleine was dead."
A copy of the dossier will now be given to their investigators and the leads followed up.
A spokesman said: "Kate and Gerry knew potential fresh information was not being properly followed up, if at all.
"Kate and Gerry will have to do it themselves."
The McCanns' lawyer, Isabel Duarte, accused police chief Ricardo Paiva of deliberately ignoring the leads.
She said: "Every piece of information was treated the same - Paiva writes on it, 'This is not relevant to the investigation'."
'KATE AND GERRY WILL HAVE TO DO IT THEMSELVES'
Doesn't seem to me that they want the case re-opened.

Re: Madeleine McCann: Spotted in Italy and the National Theatre
Hi
I am sorry but a little sarcasm is creeping into my post. Do all these little blonde haired girls around the world that look similar to Madeleine and other little blonde haired girls really need to actually be checked out if she is in the lawless villages near PdL?
Sorry in advance if that offends anyone but I do find it amazing that she can be all over the place and in the lawless villages at the same time.
Take care

Re: Madeleine McCann: Spotted in Italy and the National Theatre
Agreed Kololi, there's lots of little blonde haired girls. And as soon as a child disappears and it's published sightings from all over the world will be reported. It's inevitable. People want to help, people get it wrong.
But what IF one of those sightings was that little girl? The only way to find out about it is by investigating things.
Nobody knows what's happened, if she was abducted by a lone predator, by a ring, or accidentally died at the apartment. So nothing can be ruled out imo.
Besides, wouldn't the police force who reports it, also classify it, like credible or not?

Can't say I've spent any time reading Anorak. Not sure what to make of it. When I click on it it does nothing to inspire me to read further. Is it a spoof thingy or is it quite good?
Good point kololi. She certainly can't be anywhere else if she's in them thar hills in pdl where no one seems to be looking.

Oh for Gods sake, use her name. I really do not know why you 'pros' seem incapable of referring to Madeleine by her name.

Even her grandmother couldn't use her name when she said "That girl could throw a tantrum is she wanted to". I mean, how can you say something like when she's just been abducted by a paedophile? Surely any tantrum would go out of the window - much like Maddie was supposed to?
Re: Madeleine McCann: Spotted in Italy and the National Theatre
Plenty of people refer to Madeleine without using her name. It's not a pro v anti thing and I think that's divisive to suggest it is. People say her, or she - I'm unsure how that is either offensive or worth mentioning.
In the same way that using her surname and changing it to scum or worse isn't directed at Madeleine herself. That offends people too.
Her grandmother is her grandmother - not there on the night and spoken her disapproval towards her grandchild being left.
Whatever people think of her parents, her grandmother is her grandmother...... jmho.

Just to make clear, no Im not having a grumpy day. Whenever I hear the McCanns refer to Madeleine as 'a missing child', it always strikes me as very strange that they should refer to their daughter in this way. Its almost as if they are deliberatly distancing themselves from Madeleine. Everything I have seen or heard from the McCanns tell me that they never cared for Madeleine and, even now, continue to deny their daughter a decent burial.

Furthermore, if I had a blonde haired daughter and Dave Edgar came banging on my door to question her and gawp in her eyes, Id have him arrested.

If the real police calle to check, then that would be a different matter. Dave Edgar would have the door slammed in his face.

Can't remember how Dave looks like. If he's anything like Sean Connery, I'll lock the door after he's entered the house. Even though Sean is a bit old.

I have a problem with people who are not official police officers charging around scaring children. Or maybe you have forgotten about the moronic tourist who tried to snatch the son of a Croatian footballer because she throught he was Madeleine.

Oh so banging on your door - which is how you phrased somebody knocking on your door - suddenly becomes charging round scaring little children.
Was the moronic tourist arrested?

Madeleine Mccann is sadly almost certainly dead. The dogs have an infallible record. If any pretend detective hired by two former suspects in a missing child case ( and still uncleared) knocked on my door demanding to see my daughter the door would be slammed in their face and the 'real' police called immediately. Don't forget a former member of meturdo has revealed that he was hired not to find Madeleine but bribe people to report sightings.

Re: Madeleine McCann: Spotted in Italy and the National Theatre
Hi
I have just read that the Italian Police had forwarded information to the Portuguese Police regarding some sightings of a child that might potentially have been Madeleine in Northern Italy.
Would the Italian Police not have been expected to go check these sightings out?
If Bin Laden was spotted walking through Melbourne surely the Australian Police wouldn't simply telephone the American Police and feel, "There, we have done our bit - no more for us to do now"?
Surely the Police force of the country where the sightings take place has as much duty of care to investigate them as the Portugues Police or am I missunderstanding something here?
Take care
