Well Mr Gaspar didn't think the action was related to the children at all.

I think it's disastrous that police statements become entertainment in the press. For a lot of reasons.

The confidentiality issue is one that helps ensure that people are honest to the best of their ability when giving a statement. Who would give a statement about a third party if they believe it will get slashed across the papers.

This kind of thing does nothing at all for anybody.

As you said before - it's all out in the public domain already. Too late to go back and un-name them now.

I really hope that the UK never makes a move towards this kind of public access in police investigations.

Press freedom is important, but imvho not as important as a witnesses right to anonymity and freedom to make a statement which remains confidential.

Has anyone seen the original Gaspars statement in english or are we seeing the one that has been translated into portuguese for the files and then back into english by a forum member. I hope nothings been lost in translation.

I'm glad it's out for all to see, but agree that the Doctors name should have been blanked out. It must have taken an awful lot of guts, and heart searching to make a statement like that about your friends. Being doctors too they always seem to stick together. Dr. 's feelings must have been pretty strong, otherwise she would not have contacted the police imo.

Have just had a look at the article and it only mentions David Payne's behaviour - I was under the impression that both David and Gerry were mentioned in this statement. Why no mention of Gerry?
The Gaspars' statement has been a ticking time bomb for some time, considered so sensitive by the LP that they withheld it from the PJ for 6 months. Why?
I believe that the publication of the statement will lead the questions being asked of the LP's decision to withhold it from the investigation and, hopefully, will lead to the re-opening of the case.

Because she 'thought this', 'thought that', didn't know what they were talking about. Never confronted him about it, her husband didn't confirm it etc.
It's been investigated and rejected.

I do wonder why people try to excuse everything the McCanns and their buddies do.

The gestures, the neglect, the dogs, the death scent, the blood, Goncarlo's book...when you add it all up you see a very nasty picture yet so many people trivialise it.
