Just seen this on MM, hope The Famous Grouse doesn't mind me bringing it here (google translation from link below)
Gonçalo Amaral: English research will be shot in the foot
The former coordinator of the PJ who investigated the disappearance of Maddie argues that Scotland Yard "will find much that will not please the McCanns.
In today's edition of the " Journal News ", Gonçalo Amaral reacts to the news Friday that the British police will re-investigate the case after intervention by British Prime Minister.
For the former coordinator of the PJ such research "will be a shot in the arm" for the McCanns, as it says, Scotland Yard has experience in "unmasking false abductions."

What I think is interesting is that no one from Portugal has claimed that the Met have even been in touch with them.
Amazing !!

Maybe they never will.
After all as, Dr Amaral says there is a lot of damning evidence, and most of that is in Portuguese hands.
The info from Leicester, the FSS and the conning couple themselves has been thoroughly white washed. Somehow I have the feeling that this review was not meant to finally nail the McCanns, so what better way than keep Portugal out of it, and then after months of going through all the neatly prepared "evidence" conclude there is nothing to suspect the McCanns.
I really don't think Portugal will be ever invited to this party.

Portugal needs to reopen the case then and do the review themselves if only to prove to the world it is the UK that is whitewashing this case and not them.

Maddie Case: PJ denies involvement in research UK
The Judicial Police on Friday denied the existence of a collaboration with the British police in the research work of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, the British girl who was last seen in Praia da Luz, Algarve. The information is advanced by the Renaissance.
Recall that, on Thursday evening, the international media gave account of the British Government's decision to order further efforts in the investigation of the case Maddie. However, it was not advanced any information about an involvement of the Portuguese authorities in this case, only being revealed the involvement of Scotland Yard.

I see Spudgun did say it much better than I could.

I know, ufercoffy, but somehow I doubt the will is there to do that. Maybe they still hope it will quietly go away. After all what will be in GB a problematic amount needed for this, that will be almost disasterous in Portugal. Plus there will be quite a few politicians and members of the judicial system, who don't want to be got red faced.
And I still think that that is at the core of everything: "important" people not wanting to look stupid, not then, not now.
And the McCanns shamelessly exploiting that.

Personally I think here will be much deliberating before the Portuguese are contacted.
We need to have patience and not jump to any conclusions.

Surely they have to be contacted at some point because they hold the files and evidence? How can the Brits do a good job without them?

Yes, at some point but the McCanns have only just learned of the situation as have the SY so I guess things need to be discussed, including with the McCanns. It's going to take a couple of weeks yet at a guess.

Ah, I understand, the SY need to discuss it with the McCanns, of course.
I assume that is the British way?
But it confirms what I posted above (and all over the place): no way this is an independent, unbiased and to borrow a dirty McCann word "transparent" review.

Re: Gonçalo Amaral: English research will be shot in the foot
Perhaps David Cameron is trying to tell us that now is the time to get to the bottom of this once and for all. He is putting his cards on the table, saying that he is prepared to allocate what was it 3 or 4 million pounds towards it. A figure which he didn't have to announce at all. But by giving that information he is perhaps saying he is deadly serious about getting some answers. Theresa May let's not forget is heading this up. Her previous meeting with the McCann's led to nothing and in her own words she said something along the lines of "hoping for a new perspective". A new perspective has to be a different angle, a change of direction !! If the Home Office are in the early stages of approaching the Portuguese Prosecutors, to arrange some kind of agreement, as RBxHN has pointed out, this may take a few weeks to finalise. There is also that long period where things close down in Portugal coming up, so we might be back to waiting for news in September at the earliest.
Either way, I just hope and pray for Madeleine's sake, Goncalo Amaral's and all of the poor Portuguese people affected by this hideous saga, that this is the beginning of the end. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I hope so as well but the McCanns have been campaigning for a review, the timing is of their choosing and I wouldn't be surprised if the members of the Met Team have been approved by Mitchell. A serious white-wash does not come cheap. The Met Team team will have to go through the motions of a painstaking review and perhaps there will be some sort of reconstruction. However, I feel the outcome has already been decided. I hope I am wrong.

But Dr Amaral said there are things Scotland yard will find that won't please the McCann's. The Portuguese hold all the evidence and will know if the UK is conducting a whitewash. Won't they step in and stop that happening? After all their reputations are on the line.
