Chapter 54: First. A Response and an Apology: And then a review of the (lack of) recent developments

In Chapter 53 I included a few photos captured from the video newsreel of events during the mid-morning of Friday 4/5/7 in PdL.

I believed they showed Jon Clarke, Owner, Editor and Journalist of the Olive Press, in PdL that morning, with 5 other journalists in the car park close to the bottom of the stairwell leading to apartment 5G - the Payne’s apartment - where the McCanns had stayed overnight, variously staring at a candle or sleeping, whilst the rest of PdL was searching for their daughter, Madeleine.

Well whoever she is, it could be said of any number of journalists reporting across the globe.

As far as the case of Madeleine McCann's disappearance goes, on Friday 4th May 2007 no journalist knew anything but the fact that a child had disappeared.

They can't be faulted at that stage.

and all the questions Clarke has been asked but refuses to answer in a straightforward way.
His book gives two incompatible "versions of the truth" within a few pages
1– Driving for 4 hours thinking she might be found before he even got there
2– A "MEATY CASE" which was going to pay handsomely for weeks/months/years

Did this girl know it was a Meaty case, or just a missing girl who might be found whilst she was hanging around.
What did she eventually report, and in what journal ?

We know that Len Port lives 20 minutes up the coast, heard it on the early morning radio, and decided to trundle along to see if there was a story to be had.
which is why he was there at least by 0830.

I don't know who the woman is but I'm sure that is not Jon Clarke.
The unknown man in the photo has a receeding hairline, swept to the side.
Clarkes hair is parted at the front and straggly, the photo's I've seen of Clarke doesn't show he has a receeding hairline or swept to one side.
The profile looks different too.

I have to admit I thought that too about the receding hairline - and did mention that to PeterMac a couple of days ago. But then JC does part his hair in the middle too, maybe to hide that hairline.
And with his money he could have had a hairline reconstruction big grin

It's a pity we haven't got another side-on pic of his face.

There's also this paragraph from Peter's chapter to consider:

That would of course put us in the odd position where we now have no independent evidence that Clarke was present in PdL on 4/5/7, and simultaneously that Clarke failed to note SIX other journalists in the area, one of whom was a remarkable Doppelgänger, clone, impersonator, spitting image, dead-ringer or double of himself. And we may assume that BOTH remained in PdL for the next few days at least, working alongside, but never meeting or seeing each other, including at the formal press conferences and in the daily informal meetings and liquid lunches of journalists in the cafe bar of the Baptista Supermarket – described so vividly by Paulo Reis – and their many similarities in physical appearance, dress sense, and body language and personal idiosyncrasies strangely unremarked by the rest of the journalist pack.

'Who else was in the trench?' also now becomes 'who else was in the car park?'
We need to keep in mind that JC said he spoke to the McCanns as they were leaving. His doppleganger was there in the car park at the same time in a 'pack' of only 6 journalists.

I agree, I don't think it looks like Clarke. The image is very fuzzy.

Thank you Jill and Silentscope.
The picture of JC taken describing "the trench" 4th and 5th May show him with long staggly hair, in the picture of the man with the policeman the hair is totally different.
In the total absence of any clear photo's taken of JC, around 5a or the McCann's, we only have JCs word for being where he say's he was on 4th May.
The only thing to go off, is his dated and timed reports to the newspapers he was reporting for.

As I said there's a gap of 11 years between the two photos so, of course, his hair could well be different.
He was describing the trench in the Netflix doc 2018.

You've also got to bear in mind that he was married (until recently it would seem) to a very attractive woman - and she may have encouraged him to, shall we say, make himself a bit more ahem attractive.

Which clearly didn't work because now he lists on his farcebewk page that he hasn't got any family members except his children...and goodness knows where they might live winkwink

there is also a picture here from his own paper once upon a time, at least our very dear jon has the exact same taste in footwear and sloppy sweaters i do think.

and on this picture he is not much into the middle of the hair dividing type either, and even the typical male over thirties parking spots must be there.

but really if the one in the getty video's is not our dear jon, does it mean there are two of them walking the earth. it would be a sound explanation of his mixing up on arrival times, must be hard to always keep an eye on your own clone.

2. Clarke WAS genuinely in a position to see the things he reports he saw

4. Clarke WAS genuinely furthermore the only journalist in that position.

How can proving that he told the truth be "damaging to his reputation" ?

the one i linked, has the totman effect, not a unknown factor in this saga, shoes alike, sweater alike, guy alike.

and i get the idea he did never named his paper olive because of olives, but because it is or was his favorite colour, or who knows, maybe it was olive press first and the colors are the company style.

he is not afraid of choosing a new hair fit either. but chooses for a straight cut instead of whiskers next to his ears, same as the mystery man of praia da luz in the early video's and pictures. most looks to be owned by sky news or itn, some early ones are also belong to keir simmons, also one that is known as one of the first journalists at the scene.

there is another owner of early pictures of may 4 2007 named 'melanie maps', but there is very little to find about it, if it is a company, or a person i do not know, affiliated to apf and called a stringer.

some photo archiving sites have a option to see who owns the rights of a picture, and the lady has a camera, and the mystery man too, but none of the names i have found looks even a bit to one of them.

besides large press agencies, there could also be a lot of more local press out. same with the expat sites.
and a reporter/journalist on holiday in the algarve can get access to that parking lot, it is not it was an actual restricted area, for press cards only people. there are many free lance reporters out there, and it was not a big story on that first morning. so get some lines and a picture is where the money is.

YES That is a very short clip from the much longer one I quote in the article

In the longer clip Mystery Man then shakes hands with the GNR officer and touches him on the upper arm/ pats him/ strokes him/ or whatever is the p.c. word to use when a man caresses another before moving away SECONDS BEFORE the camera pans back to catch the McCanns actually leaving from the stairwell where Clarke now says he wasn't.
During those few seconds Clarke passed the Dog vans and dogs, the forensic specialist trying to take prints from the obviously NOT Broken shutters, and goes past dozens of other police officers,

But somehow failed to note or remember those details when he eventually did his write up, about being the first or only, and the first couple of dogs arriving late in the afternoon, and only a few police officers at the scene, and [insert nonsense story here ]
